The Audio Service G5 12 Icon in review

Falls Sie an der neuesten Technik interessiert sind, sollten Sie noch ein wenig weiter stöbern, denn hier handelt es sich um ein Auslaufmodell. Die Gesamtnote wurde mit einem Abschlag versehen.

Audio Service presents the G5 12 Icon, a model in a high-quality category. It can compensate for a mild to moderate hearing need. It is a small hearing aid with a very slim design that delivers good sound by being positioned directly in the ear canal. It is worn in the ear.

Hearing comfort

In the hearing comfort section, we examine how a hearing aid handles all the background noise. Comfortable noise management significantly contributes to a user's liking and regular use of their hearing aids. A solid comfort programming by the audiologist is possible with this audio service device. The regular noise suppression has the task of mitigating uniform, rumbling background noises. In the G5 12 Icon, ambient noise is reliably detected but only moderately reduced.

In our testing, we also discovered impulse sound control. This dampens short, sharp sounds. It works fairly well here, but we are not in the top tier. Wind management is absent here. This is perfectly fine since the direct fit in the ear canal provides a very natural protection against wind noise. Spatial hearing with the G5 12 Icon occurs in a completely natural way. Due to its special placement deep in the ear canal, the function of the outer ear is preserved, and there are no losses in directional hearing. With 16 frequency channels, the G5 12 Icon clearly belongs to the better devices and allows for an individual, well-sounding programming.

The signal processing is based, among other things, on typical frequency patterns of speech and noise, but artificial intelligence is not yet employed here.

Operation & connectivity

“Can I adjust something on my hearing aid myself?” “Is there maybe an app?” These and similar questions are becoming increasingly important when choosing a hearing aid, so let's take a look at the operating and connectivity options. We searched in vain for a button as a quick access option. It has probably fallen victim to the small form factor. This is manageable, as the hearing aid makes most adjustments automatically anyway. The small remote control, which is available as an option, is very practical. For us, it's one of the most convenient ways to increase or decrease the volume or switch to another listening program. No one notices; there's no need to reach for the ear.

The modern form of operation via voice command is not yet found in the G5 12 Icon. In addition to buttons or remote controls, some hearing aids have a tap control. This means you can simply tap your ear briefly, and then the device switches. However, we do not have this feature at Audio Service, as it would require specific sensors.

We find the app for the G5 12 Icon somewhat sparse. It's best to check out the demo version before buying the hearing aid to see if it meets your needs. But we don’t want to complain; the app is definitely useful. Unfortunately, we have to do without a streaming function here and continue to hold the smartphone normally to the ear.

Simplicity & security

An important factor for the acceptance of a hearing aid is its practicality for everyday use. This includes, for example, automated functions as well as robustness and user-friendliness. When it comes to simplicity, it initially concerns easy, effortless hearing. This works quite well with the existing situational automation in the G5 12 Icon. However, when the acoustic environment is somewhat more varied, the automation reaches its limits, and we prefer to resort to manual adjustment options. A great feature of this hearing aid is the automatic acclimatization. Especially when someone has been hearing poorly for a long time and then wears a hearing aid for the first time, it is a tremendous relief. The volume does not have to be turned all the way up immediately. One can start at a lower level, and gradually and almost imperceptibly, the amplification approaches the target.

The G5 12 Icon relies on power supply with batteries instead of rechargeable batteries. Advantage: Very long battery life with a single battery. Unlike rechargeable solutions, one rarely needs to worry about the power supply. Disadvantage: There is waste in the form of used batteries. This hearing aid uses a hearing aid battery size 10.

With an IP 68 rating, the hearing aid can withstand various adverse influences. Dust cannot penetrate, it withstands longer immersion in water, and it is also protected against touches.

Rating Simplicity & security: 2,3

Extras

Finally, let's take a brief look at whether there are any extras: Worth mentioning is the tinnitus program. Those who suffer from annoying ear noises will benefit from it. Pleasant, soft sounds are set up to gently surround the tinnitus. In the end, the tinnitus blends into the soundscape and is no longer noticeable.

In these mobile times, a remote maintenance service through an app would be very helpful. This would allow one to conveniently create a new hearing aid programming from home. Unfortunately, this service is not available for the G5 12 Icon. Therefore, any requests for changes still require a visit to the specialist store.

There are no sensors in this G5 12 variant, so the popular health tracking cannot be offered. For example, it would count the steps throughout the day. As mentioned - this hearing aid does not have this feature. Other hearing aids already offer a few advanced options such as a fall alert or reminder functions. We don’t find that here, and that’s not very dramatic, as the normal hearing functions are still the most important.

Rating Extras: 3,3

Conclusion: Audio Service G5 12 Icon

In the overall result, this test device ranks in the lower positions and is missing some features. We give it a score of 4.48. For less demanding listeners, this is acceptable, but for a very active lifestyle, we recommend a hearing aid with more comprehensive comfort features.
