What is bothersome for most hearing aid users? Exactly, background noise. That’s why we first look at what comfort features the test device includes. With the G5 8 Ida BT, solid comfort programming by the hearing care professional is possible. A normal noise suppression feature is definitely present. It is supposed to dampen constant noises like street noise or the sound of the air conditioning. In our test device from Audio Service, we are not dealing with the most powerful version, but it should be sufficient for everyday use.
The noise filter in this hearing aid is quite solid and practical for daily life. There is also wind management. We find this very good, as many people enjoy being outdoors. The reduction of wind noise is at a moderate level here. A few more frequency channels would be desirable, but the existing 12 channels already allow for pretty good functionality. Spatial hearing needs a bit of training with these hearing aids. While the movable microphones help, the placement on top of the ear shell means that the spatial sound is not like that of a person with normal hearing. After a short acclimatization period, however, spatial hearing works quite well.
Sometimes we come across hearing aids that successfully process data using artificial intelligence, but this device has not reached that stage yet.

Operation & connectivity
The controls of hearing aids are today as simple or as complex as one would like. The basic functions are fully automated, of course. We wanted to know how users can additionally access the G5 8 Ida BT. A very quick way to adjust the volume is the small button on the device. It is easy to feel, and you can make the volume louder or softer in multiple steps. Additional programs for specific listening situations can also be activated with it. Those who prefer to do without the button can simply have it disabled. If you are not keen on touching your ear to adjust the volume, you will appreciate the optional remote control. This allows you to comfortably and discreetly make changes to the hearing aid.
We are always happy when a hearing aid surprises us with a great additional function. For example, we would have liked to see a voice control feature here. But currently, there is none in the G5 8 Ida BT. Some hearing aids can be controlled with a quick tap of the finger, without the need to press a button. However, this feature is not implemented here yet.
An app for individual control is available for free. However, it only offers standard functions that are useful, but the app is not really enjoyable to use. Problems with phone calls using a smartphone are a thing of the past with this device. Phone calls, music, and other sounds are transmitted completely wirelessly to the hearing aids. Headphones become unnecessary. We tested the wireless transmission during longer phone calls and while listening to music while exercising. Everything worked simply and smoothly. Only a compatible smartphone with 2.4 GHz wireless technology is needed.

Another point on our checklist is handling. Is everything simple and reliable? What does the hearing aid offer to ensure safe use in everyday life? The G5 8 Ida BT can independently differentiate between quiet and loud environments, but there isn't much more to the program automation. One can hardly do without manual adjustment options here. The device supports getting used to the new hearing experience with a fully automated acclimatization manager. It adjusts the amplification in hardly noticeable steps until my hearing loss is completely compensated. I just need to regularly wear my hearing aids.
The G5 8 Ida BT gets its power from small disposable batteries that need to be replaced every few days. While it's not rocket science, it should be considered, especially with motor issues. A rechargeable battery would be much easier to handle.
We also take a look at the robustness of the housing and discover in the data sheet the protection class IP 68. This means that dust cannot penetrate at all, and water only becomes a concern after prolonged submersion. Protection against contact is also included.

At the end of our test report, there is still some space for the extra features: We were really impressed by the optional tinnitus program. There are relatively many people who are occasionally or frequently troubled by a ringing or buzzing in their ears. The tinnitus program in the G5 8 Ida BT is basically just a sound generator. It generates broad-spectrum noises or sounds that gently and pleasantly stimulate all areas of hearing. The tinnitus is masked and is no longer perceived as disturbing.
Unfortunately, there is no option for remote adjustment. So, those who need optimization and want to change their hearing aid settings must visit an acoustics professional.
Tracking health data is a real added value in modern hearing aids. However, this audio service model lacks the necessary sensors for this feature. It would have also been nice to have some lifestyle functions, but there are none in the G5 8 Ida BT. Other hearing aids can score with language translators or fall alarms, but here it remains within the usual range of functions.
