In this test report, we look at the G8 4 CIC. It was developed by Audio Service and covers mild to moderate hearing losses. This variant is worn in the ear. The G8 4 CIC is a small mini hearing aid at a moderate price. We achieve clean sound transmission through the hardly noticeable wearing position in the ear canal.

Hearing comfort

Hearing aids are not only supposed to bring speech to the ear but also sound pleasant. So let's first take a look at the comfort features. What types of noise does the hearing aid recognize? Are they dampened or transmitted unchanged? Is the hearing aid suitable for a lively everyday life? Here with this test device, we found only limited options for comfort adjustment. As in every hearing aid, it also includes typical noise cancellation. It is supposed to reduce uniform, noisy background sounds to the point where they no longer dominate. With the G8 4 CIC, we have to settle for a minimum level of noise suppression.

There is a basic wind noise reduction. It is quite useful outside, but for a stronger autumn wind, it is not sufficient. The impulse sound management is not really recommendable in this device. Short, loud noises still sound quite intense. The 8 frequency channels are okay. However, it may be that the programming for individual hearing needs is not quite as precise, and one may have to make some compromises in sound quality. Spatial hearing with the G8 4 CIC occurs in a very natural way. Due to its special placement deep in the ear canal, the function of the outer ear is preserved, and there are no losses in directional hearing.

Signal processing is based, among other things, on typical frequency patterns of speech and noise, but artificial intelligence is not yet in use here.

Operation & connectivity

Everyone has their own hearing needs. It is advantageous if one can personalize their hearing aids beyond the automatic functions. In our test, we discovered the following access options: First, we found a button directly on the hearing aid. This is very useful, as it is the simplest and quickest way to make a change. The volume can be adjusted through this, and different hearing programs can also be activated. If someone prefers not to adjust anything directly at the ear, they can naturally deactivate the button. A remote control is available for the G8 4 CIC. It is quite practical, fits in your pocket, and offers a volume up-down option as well as various hearing programs.

For some time now, there has been a trend to adjust hearing aids using voice commands to make them louder or quieter. The idea is really good, but Audio Service has not yet implemented this feature in this device. Don’t worry, while this feature would be nice, it is not essential. Another option for controlling the hearing aids is a tap control. Simply tap your ear with your fingers, which triggers a specific function. However, this possibility is not available in this Audio Service device.

We find the app for the G8 4 CIC somewhat sparse. It’s best to check out the demo version before purchasing the hearing aid to see if it meets your needs. But we don't want to complain; the app is definitely useful. If you were looking forward to wireless streaming, we regret to inform you that a wireless module has unfortunately not been integrated here.

Simplicity & security

To continue taking on the perspective of hearing aid users, we naturally also need a test for everyday usability. Here’s what we found: We don’t necessarily experience simple, comfortable listening with the G8 4 CIC. In a quieter daily routine, one can manage quite well, but as soon as you have a varied listening day, you cannot avoid manual adjustments. Very important in terms of simplicity is the support during the acclimatization period. Particularly after years of poor hearing, it is sometimes difficult to perceive everything at a natural volume. Our test device features an acclimatization manager that helps us with very small volume adjustments throughout the adjustment phase. After a few weeks or months, we reach the calculated amplification level.

The G8 4 CIC is not rechargeable. It operates with hearing aid batteries size 10. Disadvantage: The batteries are disposed of after use. Advantage: The daily charging of batteries is eliminated, and the hearing aid runs continuously for several days on one battery.

The datasheet certifies the Audio Service device with an IP protection class of 68. This makes it one of the most robust hearing aids on the market. Dust has no chance, and water does not penetrate the housing, as long as it doesn't submerge deeper than 1.5 m. Nevertheless, be careful. Shampoo, for example, alters the surface tension of water. You should also avoid saltwater. However, in everyday life, you can behave quite carefree.

Extras

Everyone appreciates a few extra features, so let's see if we can find any here: We would have liked to discover a tinnitus program at this point, but unfortunately, there isn't one.

An online contact to the hearing aid specialist through the app would be very useful. This is quite common today and provides help with minor adjustment issues. Unfortunately, Audio Service has opted out of this and therefore does not earn any extra points.

If Audio Service had integrated motion sensors into this hearing aid, it could even allow for individual health tracking. However, this is not the case here. These points are lost for the G8 4 CIC in the rating. Other hearing aids already offer a few extended options such as a fall alert or reminder functions. We do not find that here, and that's not too dramatic, as the normal hearing functions are still the most important.

In the overall results, this test device ranks in the lower positions and lacks some features. We award a score of 3.58. For less demanding listeners, this is acceptable, but for a very active lifestyle, we recommend a hearing aid with more extensive comfort features.
