We are once again in the testing lab, and this time we had a product from AU in our hands or rather at our ear. The full product name is S 1 R, and it falls into the category of moderately priced devices. By storing the small speaker in the ear canal, it has good acoustic properties. The S 1 R is worn behind the ear, and it is a rather inconspicuous hearing aid for mild, moderate, and also severe hearing losses.
Hearing comfort
Right from the beginning, we address the topic of hearing comfort. By this, we mean all the features that ensure a thoroughly pleasant, rich, and disturbance-free sound. In the S 1 R, a solid comfort programming by the hearing care professional is possible.
The classic noise suppression is, of course, also present here. Its task is to recognize and slightly mitigate simple sounds from the environment. This AU model features the standard noise reduction, which is not specifically configurable. You'll have to see if that is sufficient for you. Cracking, metallic sounds don’t stand a chance with this hearing aid; they are significantly attenuated with a multi-stage tool.
With this hearing aid, we are impressed by how effectively the wind noise is suppressed and how stable the device operates even in stronger winds. The hearing aid can independently orient itself toward the speaker in front, but we don't receive much more support for spatial hearing from the S 1 R. We always take a close look at the number of equalizer bands. They are important for adjusting the sound of a hearing aid as closely as possible to the hearing curve. Additionally, the speech noise management also occurs within these bands. The S 1 R has 12 of them. That’s okay. By the way, you might perceive the sound of this AU device as clearer and more natural, especially in noisy environments. This is probably due to the implemented artificial intelligence. The hearing aid has already been trained with millions of real sounds, which leads to significantly improved differentiation between speech and noise.

Operation & connectivity
Most hearing aids automatically adjust to their environment. However, it is sometimes very convenient to be able to make some changes yourself. After all, the hearing aid does not know how you are feeling at the moment. We looked at the control options that the S 1 R offers: A very quick way to adjust the volume is the small button on the device. It is easy to feel, and you can increase or decrease the volume in several steps. Additional programs for specific listening situations can also be activated with it. If you prefer to do without the button, you can simply have it deactivated. A discreet way to change the hearing aid is the remote control. It fits in any pocket. If the person you are talking to is speaking too quietly again, just one or two clicks are enough to adjust the volume. Additional hearing programs for listening to music or for driving can also be activated with the remote control.
The modern form of operation via voice command is not yet found in the S 1 R. In addition to buttons or remote controls, some hearing aids also have a tap control. This means you can simply tap your ear briefly, and the device will switch. However, we don’t have that here at AU, as it would have required specific sensors.
It is very convenient to adjust the hearing aids via the app. There is also a free app for the S 1 R. In our opinion, the range of functions is average, but usually sufficient. It’s best to try it out in demo mode first. Problems with phone calls using a smartphone are a thing of the past with this device. Phone calls, music, and other sounds are transmitted completely wirelessly to the hearing aids. Headphones become unnecessary. We tested the wireless transmission during longer phone calls as well as for listening to music while exercising. Everything worked simply and smoothly. Only a compatible smartphone with 2.4 GHz wireless technology is required.

No matter how great the hearing aid sounds: nothing is more unpleasant than a product that constantly presents us with hurdles in everyday life. Therefore, simplicity and safety are very important topics in our hearing aid tests: unfortunately, the S 1 R cannot provide automatic situation recognition; we have to make manual adjustments to hear well in different acoustic situations. The adjustment to the new hearing experience is supported by this device with a fully automatic acclimatization manager. It adjusts the amplification in barely noticeable steps until my hearing loss is completely balanced. I don't have to do anything other than wear my hearing aids regularly.
Ease of use in everyday life definitely includes the power supply. The S 1 R has a built-in battery and is rechargeable multiple times. Since a full charge lasts all day, we don't have to worry about the battery dying in the middle of a conversation.
With IP 68 certification, the hearing aid can withstand various adverse influences. Dust cannot penetrate, it can withstand prolonged submersion in water, and it is also protected against contact.

The finale belongs to the extras, that is, small additional features that could earn the hearing aid a few extra points: Here, we noticed the tinnitus option. Those who wish can have a special tinnitus program set up. This applies a gentle noise to the ears if needed, to distract from the annoying tinnitus. The sounds can be designed according to personal hearing preferences.
We really like the remote adjustment feature. It is very helpful whenever you want to make just a small change to the hearing aid settings but don’t want to drive to the audiologist. Instead, you can make contact via the app, and the hearing professional sends an adjusted data package back in the same way.
Tracking health data is a real added value in modern hearing aids. However, this AU model lacks the necessary sensors for this service. Get even more out of the S 1 R by utilizing the smart lifestyle features. They expand the operational range of the hearing aids with various assistance programs and significantly enhance their functionality.

Abschließend lässt sich sagen, dass es sich bei diesem Gerät um einen echten Allrounder handelt, der uns mit seiner Komfortausstattung überzeugt und mit der Note 2,27 ein gutes Gesamtergebnis erzielt. Wer auf Spitzentechnik verzichten möchte, aber trotzdem einen bequemen Höralltag wünscht, der ist hier an der richtigen Stelle.
