We are once again in the test lab, and this time we had a product from Beltone in hand or rather on the ear. The full product name is Serene 4 Akku ITE, and it is positioned slightly above the average in its price category. Due to its placement in the front part of the ear canal, it has good acoustic properties. The Serene 4 Akku ITE is worn in the ear and is a small hearing aid for mild to profound hearing losses.
With the new Serene family, Beltone is preparing for the wireless future. The devices have Auracast already integrated.
Hearing comfort
Hearing aids are not only supposed to bring speech to the ear, but also sound pleasant. So let's first look at the comfort features. What types of noise does the hearing aid recognize? Are they dampened or transmitted unchanged? Is the hearing aid suitable for a lively everyday life? With this test device, a solid comfort programming by the hearing care professional is possible. As with any hearing aid, there is the typical noise reduction included here. It should reduce uniform, noisy background sounds to the extent that they do not dominate as much. The noise reduction in the Serene 4 Battery ITE works quite well. There are other models that reduce background noise significantly more, but this one should suffice for normal hearing everyday life.
When it comes to wind noise reduction, we are dealing with a relatively simple wind filter. The Serene 4 Battery ITE also has impulse noise reduction. It reliably recognizes all short, clattering noises, but the damping is relatively low. With 12 frequency bands, one can achieve a fairly good sound. A passionate musician may not be entirely satisfied with this, but for normal hearing and sound needs, this number is perfectly sufficient. One has to train spatial hearing a bit with these hearing aids. Although the movable microphones help, due to their position at the top of the ear shell, spatial sound is not as it is for a person with normal hearing. However, after a short acclimatization period, spatial hearing works quite well.
Signal processing is based, among other things, on typical frequency patterns of speech and noise, but artificial intelligence has not yet been implemented here.

Operation & connectivity
Most features of this Beltone model are activated automatically. However, it can be very useful to have the option to extend the functionality a bit. In our test, we found out what options we have here. First, we discovered a button directly on the hearing aid. This is very practical, as it is the easiest and fastest way to make adjustments. The volume can be adjusted through it, and different hearing programs can also be activated. If you prefer not to adjust anything directly at the ear, you can of course deactivate the button. Those who do not like to touch their ear to increase the volume will appreciate the optional remote control. This allows for comfortable and discreet changes to the hearing aid.
The modern way of operating via voice command is not yet found in the Serene 4 Akku ITE. If there are sensors in the hearing aid, tap control could be an option, which would involve triggering a specific function by tapping your fingers on the ear. However, this possibility is not available in the Serene 4 Akku ITE.
Apps for hearing aids are widespread today. The one for the Serene 4 Akku ITE has sparked our playful side. It is fun to use this app, as it expands the functionality of the hearing aid with a few very useful tools. For our digital everyday life, a streaming option would be nice. The present device meets our request and includes a 2.4 GHz radio module. This allows making phone calls and sending sounds directly from the smartphone to the hearing aids.

Unfortunately, the Serene 4 Battery ITE cannot provide automatic situation detection; we need to make manual adjustments to hear well in different acoustic situations. The integrated acclimatization manager can be a great help in getting started with hearing aids. Its job is to gradually increase the volume of the hearing aid in tiny steps until the target volume is reached. This way, you can relax and gradually get used to the new hearing experiences. Easy handling in everyday life definitely includes power supply. The Serene 4 Battery ITE has a built-in battery that can be recharged multiple times. Since one charge is guaranteed to last all day, we don't need to worry about the battery dying in the middle of a conversation.

Extras
We complete the test by checking if there are a few extras for you: A special tinnitus program can be programmed into the Serene 4 rechargeable ITE upon request. This allows for the generation of stimulating, pleasant sounds that distract from tinnitus when it is particularly strong. We find this very useful and are happy to award extra points.
We find the remote maintenance service to be exciting. If you don't have the opportunity to visit the audiologist, you can instead contact them through the app, briefly describe your hearing problem, and then receive a data package with a new hearing device configuration. If it sounds good, you can upload it to your hearing aids.
Some hearing aids can track certain health data. However, this requires special sensors in the hearing aid, which we unfortunately do not have in the Serene 4 rechargeable ITE. The functionality of the Serene 4 rechargeable ITE is limited to normal hearing, which is perfectly fine. Additional features like fall alarms or Siri integrations do offer significant added value but are not relevant for good sound adjustment.
