We get a discreet hearing aid from the budget segment that is worn in the ear. With the sound outlet close to the eardrum, the foundation for good hearing success is laid, as the sound has only a very short distance to travel to the eardrum. As a result, all sounds actually reach the place where we want them to.

Hearing comfort
The comfort features determine how pleasant listening in everyday life is experienced. With this hearing aid, we found very few options for influencing comfort. A classic noise suppression is intended to reduce annoying background noises to a bearable level. In the Alpha 1 ITE HS, we have to settle for a minimum level of noise suppression. The Alpha 1 ITE HS is also prepared for windy outdoor situations. The signal processing can identify wind and reduce it slightly.
A filter for rattling, popping noises is not present here – unfortunately, there is no point for that. The microphone technology is quite simple. The hearing aids cannot create a real spatial perception like that of normally hearing individuals. When trying to gauge directions or distances through hearing, one has to be cautious; it only becomes reliable after a certain acclimatization period, if at all. A decent basis for programming the Alpha 1 ITE HS is provided by the 12 equalizer bands. As sound junkies, we would wish for a few more, but for the typical situations we encounter in our everyday lives, a reasonably good sound profile can already be achieved from them.
Speech in noisy environments is always a challenge. Bernafon addresses this issue with the use of artificial intelligence. The result is brilliant and clear speech transmission, while ambient noises still come through realistically loud.

Operation & connectivity
Most hearing aids automatically adapt to their environment. However, it is sometimes very practical to be able to change something yourself. After all, the hearing aid does not know how you are feeling at the moment. We looked at the control options offered by the Alpha 1 ITE HS: A very quick way to adjust the volume is the small button on the device. It is easy to feel, and one can increase or decrease the volume in several steps. Additional programs for specific hearing situations can also be activated with it. If someone wants to do without the button, they can simply have it deactivated. If desired, there is a remote control for the hearing aid. This allows for effortless volume adjustment. The handling is not only child’s play, but no one will notice that you are adjusting your hearing aids.
We are always happy when a hearing aid surprises us with a great additional feature. For example, we would have liked to see a voice control option at this point. But there is currently none in the Alpha 1 ITE HS. This Bernafon model does not have control of the hearing aids with a simple tap of a finger, as it would have required specific sensors in the housing.
An app on the smartphone is supposed to make operation easier, and we have found one for the Alpha 1 ITE HS as well. In addition to the basic functions like volume and programs, we find a few more buttons for personalization. The Alpha 1 comes with a 2.4 GHz antenna and offers us the pleasure of binaural phone calls. This even gives us an advantage over normal hearing individuals. We find that great and are happy to award points.

Unfortunately, the simple hearing with the Alpha 1 ITE HS does not look very good. The situation automatic is quite limited, providing little support when it gets loud around us. This can be compensated by using the manual adjustment options. However, this hardly scores any points in terms of simplicity. A great bonus in this hearing aid is the automatic acclimatization. Especially when someone has been hearing poorly for a longer period and then wears a hearing aid for the first time, this is an enormous relief. The volume does not have to be raised immediately to the maximum level. One can start at a lower level, and gradually and almost unnoticed, the amplification approaches the target.
Alpha 1 ITE HS relies on battery power instead of rechargeable batteries. Advantage: Very long runtime with one battery. Unlike rechargeable solutions, you only need to care about the power supply very rarely. Disadvantage: There is waste in the form of used batteries. This hearing aid uses a hearing aid battery of size 312.

There are quite a few people who are occasionally or frequently plagued by a ringing or buzzing in their ears. The tinnitus program in the Alpha 1 ITE HS is essentially nothing more than a sound generator. It is designed to produce wideband noises or sounds that gently and pleasantly stimulate all areas of hearing. The tinnitus is drowned out and no longer perceived as bothersome.
We find the remote maintenance service exciting that you can use. If you don't have the opportunity to visit the hearing care professional, you can instead contact them via the app, briefly describe your hearing problem, and receive a data package with a new hearing aid configuration. If it sounds good, you upload it to your hearing aids.
Tracking health data is a real added value in modern hearing aids. However, this Bernafon model lacks the sensors for this service. Then there are a few lifestyle features that turn your hearing aid into a smart assistant. Connect with voice assistants like Siri, or discover what else the app has to offer. While it may not have much to do with actual hearing, it can be extremely useful.
