We are once again in the testing lab, and this time we had a product from Bernafon in our hands, or rather on our ear. The full product name is Encanta 200 CIC, and it is classified among the devices in a higher quality range. Due to its precise placement directly in the ear canal, it has good acoustic properties. The Encanta 200 CIC is worn in the ear, and it is a small, barely visible hearing aid for mild to severe hearing losses.
Hearing comfort
What is most bothersome for hearing aid users: Exactly, background noise. That’s why we first take a look at the comfort features of the test device. The Encanta 200 CIC offers customers a comprehensive noise management system. Normal noise suppression is definitely present. It is supposed to dampen constant sounds like street noise or the hum of the air conditioning. In our test device from Bernafon, we are not dealing with a high-performance variant, but in most listening situations, the noise suppression should be sufficient.
In our test, we also discovered impulse sound control. Short, popping sounds are dampened by this. It works fairly well here, but we are not in the top tier. There is no wind management here. This is completely fine, as the direct fit in the ear canal provides a natural protection against wind noise. The more bands the equalizer in the hearing aid has, the more reliably it separates speech from background noise. The sound can also be shaped better. The Encanta 200 CIC has 18 bands, making it one of the more powerful models. Spatial hearing with the Encanta 200 CIC requires a bit of practice. However, the adaptive microphone system offers quite good support in social situations.
Artificial intelligence has also made its way into hearing aids, for example, here in the Encanta 200 CIC. This provides a lot more data to identify speech and noise. In our experience, the sound of hearing aids with AI is perceived as particularly precise and realistic.

Operation & connectivity
Buttons, switches, controls ... or would you prefer an app? Controls can significantly expand the functionality of hearing aids. Is there something like that in the Encanta 200 CIC? We looked it up. For those who want to quickly and easily adjust the volume, there is a button on the device. It also allows you to select additional programs for special hearing situations. Remote controls for hearing aids are common today, but Bernafon has not provided one for this device.
Voice commands are a relatively new way to operate hearing aids. However, this option is not available in this model yet. That's not a big deal - the main thing is to hear well. Tap Control would have also been an interesting feature. With it, you could change the function with a quick tap on the ear. But that is not available in the Encanta 200 CIC yet.
If you are looking for an app, unfortunately, you won't find one here. The Encanta 200 CIC has to do without smart control functions. This point is lost. Unfortunately, we also have to forgo streaming functionality and continue to hold the smartphone to the ear as usual.

How does one manage with the hearing aid in everyday life? This is the next aspect we need to evaluate. Only when such a device functions easily and straightforwardly can one become accustomed to it. Hearing is significantly facilitated by good situational awareness. In the Encanta 200 CIC, we found a fairly solid automatic feature that copes well with common hearing situations. This might be sufficient if the acoustic conditions are not too challenging. A great benefit of this hearing aid is the automatic acclimatization. Especially for those who have been hearing poorly for a long time and are wearing a hearing aid for the first time, this is a tremendous relief. The volume does not have to be immediately set to maximum. One can start at a lower level and gradually, almost unnoticed, the amplification approaches the target.
The Encanta 200 CIC is not rechargeable. It operates with size 10 hearing aid batteries. Disadvantage: The batteries are disposed of after use. Advantage: There is no need for daily recharging of batteries; the hearing aid runs continuously for several days on a single battery.
With an IP 68 certification, the hearing aid can withstand various adverse influences. Dust cannot penetrate, it can withstand prolonged submersion in water, and it is also protected against contact.

Extras
We complete the test by checking if there are a few extras for you: A special tinnitus program can be programmed in the Encanta 200 CIC upon request. This allows for the generation of stimulating, pleasant sounds that distract from the tinnitus when it is particularly strong. We find this very useful and are happy to award extra points.
In mobile times like these, a remote service via an app would be very helpful. This would allow a new hearing aid programming to be created comfortably from home. Unfortunately, this service is not available for the Encanta 200 CIC. Therefore, for any changes, one must still visit the specialist shop.
Tracking health data is a real added value in modern hearing aids. However, this Bernafon model lacks the sensors for this service. This Bernafon hearing aid does not have any additional lifestyle options onboard. Elsewhere, there are voice assistants or reminder functions, but these are not necessary for good hearing. It would have just made the product a bit cooler.
