Hearing comfort
In the first chapter, we assess the quality of noise management. We call it listening comfort, as these features determine how pleasant the hearing aid user finds the sound from their hearing aids. However, sounds can be of various natures and require quite different tools for suppression. With the Encanta 400 CIC, we were impressed by the excellent noise management. First, we look at noise suppression. It is meant to tame everyday sounds like the noise from ventilation or the refrigerator. In this Bernafon model, we find a truly strong noise suppression that makes listening extremely enjoyable. Once you have experienced impulse sound suppression in a hearing aid, you don't want to give it up. The Encanta 400 CIC has one of those and can handle all short and intense sound events effortlessly. This includes things like dishes clattering in the kitchen or footstep sounds on a hard floor. Wind noise is another specialized topic. Anyone who has been outdoors with older hearing aids knows what we mean. However, with the Encanta 400 CIC, this is not an issue due to its design. The wind does not really reach the microphones because they are located in the ear canal. Very important for good speech-noise distinction is the number of frequency channels. With 24, this hearing aid is right at the forefront and offers excellent adjustment options. Spatial hearing may be a little challenging at first, but once you understand how the microphones behave in certain situations, you can quite reliably estimate directions and distances. Artificial intelligence has also made its way into hearing aids, such as in the Encanta 400 CIC. This means there is a lot more data available to identify speech and noise. In our experience, the sound from hearing aids with AI is perceived as particularly precise and realistic.

Operation & connectivity
Since you likely don't have your hearing care professional by your side all the time, it can be very helpful to be able to make changes to your hearing aid yourself. There are various control options available, and we will look at what the Encanta 400 CIC has. Usually, there is a button on the hearing aid, and we found it on the Encanta 400 as well. It can be configured as a volume control or program selection button, and it can also be deactivated if desired. We did not find a remote control. Unfortunately, because we actually think this discreet control option is quite good.
For some time now, there has been a trend to adjust hearing aids louder or quieter through voice commands. The idea is really good, but Bernafon is not quite there yet with this device. Don’t worry, this feature would be nice, but it is not essential. If there are sensors in the hearing aid, tap control could be a possibility, which would involve triggering a specific function by tapping your fingers on your ear. However, this option is not available in the Encanta 400 CIC.
An additional app for personalized control would be nice, but is currently not offered for this hearing aid. If you were looking forward to wireless streaming, we unfortunately have to disappoint you, as a wireless module has not been integrated here.

Our analysis also addresses the everyday usability of hearing aids. It involves robustness, but also special comfort features that aim to make daily use as simple as possible. The situation automation of the Encanta 400 CIC includes almost everything one might experience in daily life. It gives me the perfect setting at all times without me having to do anything actively. Especially during varied phases, this is extremely convenient and almost makes me forget that I have the hearing aid in my ear. Some people find it difficult to adjust, but this hearing aid makes it easy for us to cope with the new volume. There is an acclimatization manager that gradually introduces us to the required target amplification. The duration can range from a few weeks to several months, and this is individually adjustable. The individual steps are so small that you hardly notice there has been a volume increase.
Encanta 400 CIC is not equipped with a battery, so it is not rechargeable. It is powered by a hearing aid battery size 10. It needs to be replaced every few days.
The data sheet certifies the Bernafon device with a rating according to IP protection class 68. Thus, it is one of the most robust hearing aids on the market. Dust stands no chance, and water does not penetrate the housing, as long as it does not submerge deeper than 1.5 meters. However, please be cautious. Shampoo, for example, alters the surface tension of the water. You should also avoid saltwater. In everyday life, however, you can behave completely carefree.

Extras
Manchmal sind es Kleinigkeiten, die ein Hörgerät perfekt machen. Deshalb gucken wir noch kurz nach den Extras, die möglicherweise hier drin stecken: Ein spezielles Tinnitusprogramm ist im Encanta 400 CIC auf Wunsch programmierbar. Damit können stimulierende, angenehme Geräusche generiert werden, die vom Tinnitus ablenken, wenn er mal wieder besonders stark ist. Das finden wir sehr nützlich und vergeben gerne Extrapunkte.
Ein schönes Feature wäre ein Fernwartungsservice, um sich vom Hörprofi auch dann helfen zu lassen, wenn man gerade nicht ins Geschäft kommen kann. Aber leider gibt es das hier nicht, also gibt es auch keinen Extrapunkt.
Ein neuer Trend in der Hörgerätebranche sind integrierte Sensoren, mit denen z.B. ein paar persönliche Gesundheitsdaten getrackt werden können. Das hat das Encanta 400 CIC aber nicht im Angebot. Bei anderen Hörgeräten gibt es schon ein paar erweiterte Optionen wie einen Sturzalarm oder Erinnerungsfunktionen. Hier finden wir das nicht, und das ist auch gar nicht so dramatisch, denn die normalen Hörfunktionen sind immer noch am wichtigsten.

Abschließend lässt sich sagen, dass es sich bei diesem Gerät um einen echten Allrounder handelt, der uns mit seiner Komfortausstattung überzeugt und mit der Note 2,3 ein gutes Gesamtergebnis erzielt. Wer auf Spitzentechnik verzichten möchte, aber trotzdem einen bequemen Höralltag wünscht, der ist hier an der richtigen Stelle.
