Here we take a look at a hearing aid from the low budget range that is worn behind the ear. It is called Viron 1 MNR and comes from the manufacturer Bernafon. It can be used by anyone with a mild to moderate hearing need who desires a hearing aid of very small size. The smart decision to place the speaker directly in the ear canal gives it very good sound properties.
Hearing comfort
First, we looked at the comfort features. The better these are, the easier and more pleasant the hearing experience becomes. In this hearing aid, we find only the bare minimum when it comes to hearing comfort. The traditional noise suppression ensures that uniform, unimportant sounds are slightly attenuated. The Viron 1 MNR has only a minimal basic reduction. A certain tolerance for noise should be expected from the hearing aid user here. This hearing aid can detect wind noise, but the reduction is barely noticeable.
A pulse sound suppressor is unfortunately not included in the Viron 1 MNR. The microphone technology is kept rather simple. The hearing aids cannot create a true spatial awareness like that of normally hearing individuals. When trying to assess directions or distances through hearing, one must be cautious; it is, if at all, only after a certain acclimatization period that this becomes reliable. A crucial point in our tests is the number of frequency bands. This plays a role in the precise programming of the hearing aids. It is also important when distinguishing between speech and noise. Here, we have 8 bands. There could certainly have been a few more, as this limits our ability to make finer adjustments. However, those who do not place much value on a brilliant sound experience might get along quite well with the Viron 1 MNR.
The signal processing is based, among other things, on typical frequency patterns of speech and noise, but artificial intelligence is not yet in use here.

Operation & connectivity
Most hearing aids automatically adjust to their surroundings. However, it can sometimes be very practical to make changes yourself. After all, the hearing aid doesn’t know how you’re feeling at the moment. We looked into the control options offered by the Viron 1 MNR: First, we discovered a button directly on the hearing aid. This is very useful, as it is the simplest and quickest way to make changes. The volume can be adjusted through it, and different hearing programs can also be activated. If you prefer not to adjust anything directly on your ear, of course, you can also deactivate the button. The small remote control, which is available as an option, is very practical. For us, it is one of the most convenient ways to turn the hearing aid up or down or switch to another hearing program. No one notices anything; there’s no need to touch your ear.
In our test, we did not find any option for voice control. This feature is not necessarily required but would have pleased us nonetheless. There is no control of the hearing aids with a simple touch in this Bernafon model, as specific sensors would have been needed in the housing.
An app on the smartphone is intended to make operation easier, and we found one for the Viron 1 MNR. In addition to basic functions like volume and programs, we find a few more buttons for personalization. For our digital everyday life, a streaming option would be nice. The device in question meets our wish and includes a 2.4 GHz wireless module. This allows phone calls and sounds to be sent directly from the smartphone to the hearing aids.

Now let's take a look at how the usage unfolds in everyday life. Is the handling easy? Do I get a safe device? The program automation in the Viron 1 MNR provides us with relatively little support. Without a few individual hearing programs, one would probably struggle in a lively everyday environment. Some people find it difficult to get used to, but this hearing aid makes it easy for us to cope with the new volume. There is an acclimatization manager that gradually leads us to the required target amplification. The duration can be a few weeks or several months; it is individually adjustable. The individual steps are so small that you hardly notice that there was an increase in volume.
The Viron 1 MNR gets its power from small disposable batteries that need to be changed every few days. This is not rocket science, but should be considered especially in case of motor skill issues. A rechargeable battery would be much easier to handle.
The data sheet certifies the Bernafon device with an IP protection class of 68. This means it belongs to the most robust hearing aids on the market. Dust has no chance, and water does not penetrate the housing as long as it does not submerge deeper than 1.5 m. Nevertheless, be cautious. Shampoo, for instance, changes the surface tension of water. You should also avoid saltwater. However, in everyday life, you can behave completely carefree.

Lastly, we are interested in whether there are any additional goodies on top: We really liked the optional tinnitus program. There are quite a few people who are occasionally or frequently bothered by a ringing or buzzing in their ears. The tinnitus program in the Viron 1 MNR is basically nothing more than a sound generator. It aims to produce broad-spectrum noises or sounds that gently and pleasantly stimulate all hearing areas. The tinnitus gets masked in it and is no longer perceived as intrusive.
A real added value is the remote maintenance service. For changes to the hearing aid settings, there is no longer a need to go to the specialist store; instead, you can directly contact the audiologist through the app. Through a cloud service, you can then upload the new data package to the hearing aids. This is exactly what we expect from a modern hearing aid.
A new trend in the hearing aid industry is integrated sensors that can track some personal health data, but the Viron 1 MNR does not offer this. Then there are a few lifestyle features that turn your hearing aid into a smart assistant. Connect with voice assistants like Siri, or discover what else the app has to offer. While this may not have much to do with actual hearing, it can be extremely useful.
