This test report is about the Viron 3 MNR. It was developed by Bernafon and covers mild to moderate hearing losses. This variant is worn behind the ear. The Viron 3 MNR is a small, barely visible hearing aid from the affordable segment. We achieve clean sound transmission by placing the small speaker in the ear canal.
Hearing comfort
In the Hearing Comfort section, we look at how a hearing aid deals with all the background noises. Comfortable noise management significantly contributes to a user's liking and regular use of their hearing aids. In this Bernafon device, we find only the absolutely necessary features regarding hearing comfort. The regular background noise suppression is designed to soften uniform, chaotic background noises. We had hoped for a bit more depth of control in the Viron 3 MNR, but – well.
Sudden noises are likely buffered, but for us, the effect was not really noticeable. For active outdoor fans, we always find wind noise management to be sensible. While this device has one, it is not very effective. You cannot adjust it individually either. We have to forgo spatial hearing with the Viron 3 MNR, but at least you can switch the microphones to a focus mode. Let’s take a quick look at the equalizer: With 10 bands, it is not particularly flexible. With a few more channels, we would surely have had a nicer, more natural sound experience. But at least we can reasonably adjust the sound to our hearing preferences.
Strategies based on artificial intelligence are not yet utilized in this hearing aid from Bernafon.

Operation & connectivity
Most functions of this Bernafon model are activated automatically. Occasionally, however, it is very useful to be able to extend the range of functions a little. In our test, we found out what options we have here. A very quick way to adjust the volume is the small button on the device. It is easy to feel, and you can adjust it louder or softer in several stages. Additional programs for special listening situations can also be activated with it. Those who want to do without the button can simply have it disabled. A remote control is available for the Viron 3 MNR. It's quite handy, fits in your pocket, and offers a volume up/down option as well as various hearing programs.
Voice commands are a fairly new way to operate hearing aids. However, we don’t have this feature in this model yet. That's not a big deal - as long as you can hear well. Besides buttons or remote controls, some hearing aids also have a tap control. This means you can simply tap your ear briefly to switch the device. However, we don't have that here at Bernafon, as it would have required specific sensors.
As is common today, we also find a smartphone app for the Viron 3 MNR. This app includes solid basic functions and adds a few extra goodies on top. For our digital daily life, a streaming option would be nice. The device at hand meets our wish and comes with a 2.4 GHz radio module. This allows you to send phone calls and sounds directly from your smartphone to the hearing aids.

Simplicity & security
Usability is the next aspect we want to address. It's about everyday practicality and the question of how easy and safe it is to navigate life with the hearing aid. For us, simplicity in a hearing aid primarily means that it adapts flexibly to changing hearing scenarios. The Viron 3 MNR didn't quite convince us in that regard. There is a situation recognition feature that differentiates between quieter and louder environments, which works. However, those who are actively engaged in life may occasionally encounter limitations. But that's not a big deal, as there are manual adjustment options available. We give a big plus point for the automatic acclimatization assistant. It gradually increases the starting volume in very small steps until my hearing goal is achieved. This significantly eases the adjustment to the new sound.
The Viron 3 MNR is not rechargeable. It continues to get its power from disposable size 312 batteries, which need to be changed every few days.
We also take a look at the robustness of the casing and discover the IP 68 protection class in the datasheet. This means that dust cannot penetrate at all, and water only becomes a danger after prolonged immersion. A protection against contact is also included.

In conclusion, we want to know if the hearing aid perhaps offers any specials: Worth mentioning is the tinnitus program. Those who suffer from annoying ear noises will benefit from it. Pleasant, quiet sounds are adjusted to gently surround the tinnitus. In the end, the tinnitus fades into the background noise and becomes hardly noticeable.
A clever tool is the integrated remote service. Almost everyone has a smartphone, and time is a scarce resource. Therefore, such a remote service is absolutely appropriate. Those who need a new programming of their hearing aids can easily contact the audiologist via the app and describe their hearing preferences. Through a cloud service, the professional can then send an individual setting as a data package to the app. From there, it gets loaded onto the hearing aid and can be tried out immediately. This definitely deserves extra points in our test.
Tracking health data is a real added value in modern hearing aids. However, this Bernafon model lacks the sensors for this service. Digital algorithms and suitable apps increasingly allow for the integration of lifestyle functions that support your daily life.
