We receive a hearing aid of very small size from the business class, which is worn behind the ear. The cleverly chosen placement of the speaker in the ear canal lays the foundation for good hearing success, as the sound has only a very short distance to travel to the eardrum. This ensures that all tones reach the desired location.

Hearing comfort

Hearing comfort determines whether someone likes to wear their hearing aids or not. That’s why we first looked at how the hearing aid handles background noise. In this model, which Bernafon presents to us, solid comfort programming by the audiologist is possible. Of course, noise suppression is integrated to lessen exhausting background noise. In the Viron 7 MNR T, the noise suppression is solid. There are hearing aids with significantly more effective noise reduction, but this one should suffice for normal needs. Regarding wind noise suppression, we are dealing with a relatively simple wind damper.

In our test, we also discovered impulse sound control. Short, popping sounds are dampened by it. This works fairly well here, but we are not in the top class now. The adjustable microphones help to identify specific directions and can also assist in noise cancellation, but the room sound was not very natural. We always take a close look at the number of equalizer bands. They are important for adjusting the sound of a hearing aid as accurately as possible to the hearing curve. Additionally, speech and noise management also occurs within these bands. The Viron 7 MNR T has 14 of them. That’s okay.

Other hearing aids already use artificial intelligence in their signal processing, but the Viron 7 MNR T does not yet incorporate this strategy.

“Can I adjust something on my hearing aid myself?” “Is there possibly an app?” These and similar questions are becoming increasingly important when selecting a hearing aid, so let's take a look at the control and connection options. A very quick way to adjust the volume is the small button on the device. It's easy to feel, and you can increase or decrease the volume in several steps. Additional programs for specific listening situations can also be activated with it. Those who wish to forgo the button can simply have it deactivated. The small remote control, which is optionally available, is very convenient. For us, this is one of the most comfortable ways to increase or decrease the volume of the hearing aid or switch to another hearing program. No one notices it; reaching for the ear is not necessary.

For some time now, there has been a trend to adjust hearing aids with voice commands. The idea is really good, but Bernafon is not there yet with this device. Don't worry, while this feature would be nice, it's not essential. If there are sensors in the hearing aid, a tap control could be considered, which would trigger a specific function by tapping the ear with your fingers. However, this option is not available in the Viron 7 MNR T.

As is common today, we also find a smartphone app for the Viron 7 MNR T. This app contains solid basic functions and adds a few extra goodies. Problems with phone calls using the smartphone are a thing of the past with this device. Phone calls, music, and other sounds are transmitted completely wirelessly to the hearing aids. Headphones become obsolete. We tested the wireless transmission during longer phone calls as well as for listening to music while exercising. Everything worked simply and smoothly. Only a compatible smartphone with 2.4 GHz wireless technology is needed.

Simplicity & security

Usability is the next aspect we want to address. It’s about everyday practicality and the question of how easy and safe it is to navigate life with the hearing aid. In the Viron 7 MNR T, we experienced an effective situational automation that supports our hearing well. This already ensures that we do not have to constantly adjust the hearing aid. Some people struggle with the adaptation, but this hearing aid makes it easy for us to cope with the new volume. There is an acclimatization manager that gradually leads us to the required target amplification. The period can last a few weeks or even several months; it is individually adjustable. The individual steps are so small that you hardly notice that there has been a volume increase.

Many hearing aids today have a rechargeable battery, but the Viron 7 MNR T continues to operate with disposable batteries. This is somewhat cumbersome to handle and also impacts the environment.

The hearing aid has been classified in the IP protection class 68. This guarantees comprehensive protection against dust ingress. Water cannot easily harm the hearing aid either. It is therefore well-equipped for outdoor activities where it may get wet and dirty. However, you should not necessarily go bathing or swimming with the hearing aids. Bath additives or the salt content in seawater can change the composition and ultimately cause damage.

Everyone appreciates a few extra features, so let's see if we can find some here: We particularly liked the optional tinnitus program. There are relatively many people who are occasionally or frequently troubled by a ringing or buzzing in their ears. The tinnitus program in the Viron 7 MNR T is essentially nothing more than a sound generator. It aims to produce wideband noises or sounds that gently and pleasantly stimulate all areas of hearing. The tinnitus is drowned out and is no longer perceived as bothersome.

A clever tool is the integrated remote maintenance service. Almost everyone has a smartphone, and time is a precious commodity. Therefore, such a remote maintenance service is definitely appropriate. If someone needs a new programming for their hearing aids, they can easily contact the audiologist through the app and describe their hearing preferences. Through a cloud service, the professional can then send an individual setting as a data package to the app. From there, it is loaded onto the hearing aid and can be tried out immediately. This definitely deserves extra points in our test.

Tracking health data is a real added value in modern hearing aids. However, this Bernafon model lacks the sensors for this service. This Bernafon device still has a few small highlights. Depending on what your smartphone supports, you can be reminded of appointments, access Siri, or use other assistance systems. That definitely gives an extra point.
