Here we take a look at a hearing aid from the upper price range that is worn behind the ear. It is called Viron 7 MNR T R and comes from the manufacturer Bernafon. It can be used by anyone with mild, moderate, or severe hearing needs who wants a small hearing aid. Due to the arrangement of the speakers discreetly in the ear towards the eardrum, it has very good sound characteristics.

Hearing comfort

The hearing comfort determines whether someone enjoys wearing their hearing aids or not. That's why we first looked at how the hearing aid handles background noise. In this model, presented by Bernafon, solid comfort programming by the hearing care professional is possible. Of course, noise suppression is integrated to reduce stressful background sounds. The Viron 7 MNR T R has solid noise suppression. There are hearing aids with significantly more effective noise reduction, but this one should be sufficient for normal requirements. Regarding wind noise suppression, we are dealing with a relatively simple wind damper.

In our test, we also discovered impulse sound control. Short, popping sounds are dampened by this feature. It works reasonably well here, but we are not in the top class. The adjustable microphones help recognize certain directions and can also assist in noise cancellation, but the room sound was not very natural. We always look closely at the number of equalizer bands. They are important for adjusting the sound of a hearing aid as accurately as possible to the hearing curve. Additionally, speech noise management also takes place within these bands. The Viron 7 MNR T R has 14 of them. That's okay.

Other hearing aids already use artificial intelligence in their signal processing, but the Viron 7 MNR T R does not yet employ this strategy.

Almost every one of us owns a smartphone, so the question arises whether it can be connected to the new hearing aid as well. Let’s take a look at the connectivity and usability of the Viron 7 MNR T R. A very quick way to adjust the volume is the small button on the device. It is easy to feel, and you can increase or decrease the volume in several steps. Additional programs for specific hearing situations can also be activated with it. If you want to forgo the button, you can simply have it deactivated. A remote control for the hearing aid is available upon request. This allows you to effortlessly adjust the volume. The handling is not only child’s play, but no one will notice that you are currently adjusting your hearing aids.

Voice commands are a quite new way of operating hearing aids. However, we do not have this option in this model yet. That’s not a big deal – the main thing is that you can hear well. In addition to buttons or remote controls, some hearing aids also have a tap control. This means you can simply tap your ear briefly, and the device switches. Here at Bernafon, we don’t have that, as it would have required specific sensors.

The app is definitely very useful. Anyone with a smartphone should download it. Even though the app is not one of our favorites, it is still a useful addition to the Viron 7 MNR T R. Problems with phone calls using the smartphone are a thing of the past with this device. Calls, music, and other sounds are completely transmitted wirelessly to the hearing aids. Headphones become unnecessary. We tested the wireless transmission during longer phone calls as well as while listening to music during sports. Everything worked simply and smoothly. Only a compatible smartphone with 2.4 GHz wireless technology is needed.

Simplicity & security

Of course, we are also interested in how quickly one can get used to the Viron 7 MNR T R and how easy daily usage is. Listening in everyday life is facilitated by the good automatic program of the Viron 7 MNR T R. It is rarely necessary to use the manual hearing programs because the automatic already covers many situations. The adjustment to the new hearing sensation is supported by this device with a fully automatic acclimatization manager. It adjusts the amplification in barely noticeable steps until my hearing loss is completely compensated. I don’t have to do anything other than wear my hearing aids regularly.

A major relief in daily life is the integrated battery. This ensures that my Viron 7 MNR T R always has enough energy for the whole day, and I no longer have to worry that the batteries will suddenly run out in the middle of an event. Even with limited dexterity, a battery system is very helpful, as there is no need to insert small button cells.

We also take a look at the robustness of the housing and discover in the data sheet the protection class IP 68. This means that dust cannot penetrate at all, and water only becomes dangerous after prolonged immersion. A protection against contact is also included.

Finally, we want to know if the hearing aid offers any special features: We noticed the tinnitus option. If desired, a special tinnitus program can be set up. This gently plays a soft noise to distract from the annoying tinnitus. The sounds can be customized according to personal hearing preferences.

A real added value is offered by the remote maintenance service. You no longer need to visit a specialized store to change the hearing aid settings, but can directly contact the audiologist through the app. Then, through a cloud service, you can load the new data package into the hearing aids. This is exactly what we expect from a modern hearing aid.

Many hearing aids still come with a few health functions today. However, since the Viron 7 MNR T R does not have any special sensors for this, we cannot present any particular features here. You should take a closer look at the app from this Bernafon device. It contains some extras that significantly expand the functionality of these hearing aids. We really like these additional functions!
