Of course, this Hansaton device has noise suppression, as it is now standard. Noise suppression means that uniform and rather monotonous sounds (e.g., air conditioning, vacuum cleaner ...) are dampened. This works quite well. In a normal listening environment, it should be manageable.

Extremely useful is the impulse sound suppression. It captures all rattling, popping, and crackling noises and reliably reduces them. Some hearing aids reach their limits when the wind sweeps over the microphones outside. That can get pretty loud. But Hansaton has something to counter that, namely a strongly damping, adjustable wind noise suppression. It works very well and helps all those who enjoy being outdoors. If you want a hearing aid with many adjustment options, the AQ Sound FS 5 R is a great choice. It has 16 frequency bands, providing excellent settings. The sound can be modified according to individual preferences, even after several years. An adaptable directional microphone helps separate speech from noise, but we miss a true 3D experience.

For us, it is one of the most comfortable ways to adjust the hearing aid louder or quieter or to switch to another hearing program. No one notices it; reaching for the ear is not necessary.

Voice control is an operating option that is gaining increasing popularity. Hansaton has recognized this as well and offers us this feature in its AQ Sound FS 5 R. We believe it is the fastest way to adjust the volume or switch the hearing program. Now it gets really modern: With tap control, the Hansaton hearing aid can easily be switched. Sensors in the casing detect the touch when you briefly tap your ear with your fingers. And what exactly happens then is determined together with your hearing care professional. For example, you can activate a voice control or switch to a special program.

It is very convenient to adjust the hearing aids via the app. There is also a free app for the AQ Sound FS 5 R. In our opinion, the range of functions is mediocre but mostly sufficient. It is best to try it out in demo mode beforehand. One of the best features of the hearing aid is the direct streaming function. This turns the hearing aid into a TrueWireless headset, receiving phone calls and other sounds directly in the ear. A compatible smartphone equipped with 2.4 GHz technology is required. The biggest advantage is that you hear phone calls not just in one ear but in both. Additionally, the sound can be tailored to personal needs.

Another point in our checklist is handling. Is everything simple and reliable? What does the hearing aid offer to ensure safe use in everyday life? Typical hearing situations that everyone experiences in their environment are reliably recognized and adjusted through automatic controls. However, for more specific, recurring needs, one cannot avoid using the manual hearing programs. Some people find it difficult to get used to it, but this hearing aid makes it easy for us to cope with the new volume. There is an acclimatization manager that gradually leads us to the required target amplification. The duration can vary from a few weeks to several months; this is individually adjustable. The individual steps are so small that one hardly notices that there has been a volume increase.

A great relief in everyday life is the built-in battery. With this, my AQ Sound FS 5 R always has enough energy for the whole day, and I no longer have to worry about batteries suddenly running out in the middle of an event. Even with limited dexterity, a battery system is very helpful because it eliminates the need to insert small button cells.

The AQ Sound FS 5 is almost dust and waterproof and, with its IP 68 classification, is certainly well protected against external influences.

At the end of our test report, there is still a bit of space for the extra features: Hansaton has integrated a sound generator that plays some soothing sounds for those suffering from tinnitus. This can distract from the tinnitus and provide a bit more relaxation.

Hansaton is keeping up with the times and offers a future-oriented feature with the remote adjustment service. Working people with little time can contact their audiologist online and have their hearing aids reprogrammed. Even hearing aid users who have a longer journey to the specialist store benefit from this special service.

If Hansaton had integrated motion sensors into this hearing aid, individual health tracking could even be achieved. However, this is not the case here. These points cause the AQ Sound FS 5 R to lose points in the rating. This Hansaton hearing aid does not have any additional lifestyle options on board. Elsewhere, there are voice assistants or reminder functions, but for good hearing, you do not need these. It would have just made the product a bit cooler.
