Could this hearing aid from the Oticon program be the right one for you? In our review of the Geno 1 ITC, we have highlighted the key aspects. We have a slightly visible hearing aid from the lower mid-range, worn in the ear. The comfortable and acoustically favorable position in the ear canal lays the foundation for good hearing success, as the sound has only a very short distance to the eardrum. This ensures that all sounds reach their destination exactly where we want them to.
The Geno 1 ITC provides sufficient amplification for moderate, stronger, and fluctuating hearing losses.
Hearing comfort
The hearing comfort determines whether someone likes to wear their hearing aids or not. That's why we first looked at how the hearing aid handles background noise. With this model, which Oticon presents to us, we find only the absolute essentials regarding hearing comfort. Of course, noise suppression is integrated to reduce bothersome background noises. However, in the Geno 1 ITC, it works only very limited. When looking at the price, that might fit. In the Geno 1 ITC, we have wind reduction, but it doesn't really help outdoors.
Points are deducted for the lack of impulse noise suppression. Normally, this dampens short, rattling sounds. But those who choose this hearing aid should not be disturbed by that. The hearing aid automatically decides whether the microphones should focus on a speaker or not. You have a decent spatial impression, but accurately determining directions or assessing distances through hearing is not so easy. The Geno 1 ITC has only 6 frequency channels, barely meeting the minimum requirements. One shouldn't have overly high expectations regarding sound quality.
Other hearing aids already use artificial intelligence in their signal processing, but this strategy is not yet present in the Geno 1 ITC.

Operation & connectivity
Most functions are activated automatically by this Oticon model. However, it is sometimes very useful to be able to extend the range of functions a little. In our test, we found out what options we have here. There is a button directly on the hearing aid. With this, you can change the volume or activate additional hearing programs. It can be programmed according to customer preferences. The use is, of course, optional. A discreet way to change the hearing aid is the remote control. It fits in any pocket. If the person you are talking to is once again speaking too softly, one or two clicks are enough to adjust the volume. Additional hearing programs for listening to music or driving can also be activated with the remote control.
In our test, we did not find any option for voice control. This function is not necessarily needed, but we would have appreciated it nonetheless. If there are sensors in the hearing aid, tapping control could be an option, which would involve triggering a specific function by tapping the ear with your fingers. However, this option is not available in the Geno 1 ITC.
Oticon offers a suitable app for easier operation. However, it is not particularly well-equipped and hardly goes beyond the basic functions like loud/quiet and hearing programs. In our test, we also tried a small additional tool, a streamer. It connects the hearing aids wirelessly to all sorts of mobile devices. This wireless transmission function was one of the most sensible elements of this hearing aid. We were able to make phone calls wonderfully and heard the conversation in both ears. We could also enjoy music while jogging or a podcast during our lunch break at our desired volume, without bothering other people.

Simplicity & security
How does one cope with the hearing aid in everyday life? This is the next aspect we will evaluate. Because only when such a device works simply and uncomplicated can one get used to it. Unfortunately, there is no powerful automatic situation adjustment in the Geno 1 ITC. We have to make do with a few standard settings. Active hearing aid users will certainly encounter limits here. Very important in terms of simplicity is our support during the acclimatization process. Especially after having heard poorly for years, it is sometimes difficult to perceive everything at a natural volume. Our test device has an acclimatization manager that helps us through the adjustment phase with very small volume adjustments. After a few weeks or months, we then reach the calculated amplification level.
Zinc-air batteries power the Geno 1 ITC. Changing the battery could become quite cumbersome for people with limited dexterity or vision. If you have concerns about that, it would be better to look for a rechargeable model.
The data sheet certifies the Oticon device with an IP protection class 68 certification. This makes it one of the most resistant hearing aids on the market. Dust has no chance, and water does not penetrate the housing as long as it doesn't submerge deeper than 1.5 meters. However, be cautious. Shampoo, for example, alters the surface tension of water. You should also avoid saltwater. In everyday life, however, you can behave completely carefree.

In conclusion, we want to know if the hearing aid perhaps offers any specials: Tinnitus is a topic for many people, but unfortunately, this hearing aid does not have a special tinnitus sound program. So we can't award an extra point here.
An online contact with the hearing care professional through the app would be very useful. This is already quite common today and provides assistance with minor adjustment problems. Unfortunately, Oticon does not offer this, and therefore does not earn any extra points.
There are no sensors in this Geno 1 variant, so popular health tracking cannot be offered. For example, steps taken throughout the day are counted. As mentioned - this hearing aid does not have this feature onboard. It would have been nice to have some lifestyle functions, but those are not available in the Geno 1 ITC. Other hearing aids can score points with features like language translation or fall alarms, but here it remains within the usual range of functions.
