Oticon: Small In-Ear Hearing Aid Geno CIC by Oticon
2.5/5 Rating **

The Oticon Geno 2 CIC in review

We tested a small, barely visible hearing aid from the low-budget range this time. It is the Oticon Geno 2 CIC. It is worn in the ear and is intended for mild to moderate hearing loss. The device owes its precise fitting location directly in the ear canal to its design, which is why it also delivers a nice, clear sound.

Hearing comfort

A good speech understanding is a given in modern hearing aids. Equally important is the hearing comfort. Only when the ratio of speech transmission to the level of background noise is right, is the hearing perceived as pleasant. Therefore, we take a look at the comfort features: In the Geno 2 CIC, we find only the absolute essentials regarding hearing comfort. Normal background noises like street noise, the vacuum cleaner sound, or that from the fan should be suppressed by classic noise cancellation. This Oticon hearing aid has a simple noise reduction integrated by the manufacturer, but it cannot be further adjusted.

A pulse sound suppressor is unfortunately not included in the Geno 2 CIC. Users of the Geno 2 CIC must, however, cope with the wind that sweeps over the microphones. There is no wind noise suppression here. Hearing aids like the Geno 2 CIC retain the natural spatial feeling we have experienced since childhood. The function of the outer ear, head size, head shadow effects - all these parameters create a true, original 3D hearing. One more word about the equalizer: with 6, the number of adjustable bands is quite low. Those who are satisfied with the basic character of the hearing aid might find it sufficient. However, for music lovers, we would rather recommend a higher number of channels.

An exciting topic in audiology is the use of artificial intelligence, but this is not applied in this Oticon model.

Operation & connectivity

How can one fully leverage the potential of hearing aids in everyday life? We found out what accessibility options are available with the Geno 2 CIC. Most of the time, there is a button on the hearing aid, and we found that on the Geno 2 as well. It can be configured as a volume control or program selection button and can also be deactivated upon request. We would have liked to have a remote control, but Oticon does not offer one for this model. So, no points in that regard.

Voice commands are a relatively new way to operate hearing aids. However, we do not have this option in this model yet. That's not a big deal - the main thing is being able to hear well. There is no control of the hearing aids with a simple tap in this Oticon model, as it would have required specific sensors in the casing.

If you are looking for an app, unfortunately, you will not find one here. The Geno 2 CIC must do without smart control features. That point is lost. The smartphone cannot be connected to the hearing aid, as the necessary equipment with a radio antenna is unfortunately missing.

Simplicity & security

Next up in the test: How is the user-friendliness? Is it easy or complicated to handle the hearing aid? We don't compromise on simplicity when it comes to hearing. We expect the hearing aid to operate fully automatically in the background and not require us to constantly press various buttons. We are somewhat disappointed with the Geno 2 CIC in this regard. Only basic situations are automatically recognized. This means that we cannot really do without manual controls. We give a big plus point for the automatic acclimatization assistant. It gradually raises the initial volume in very small steps until my hearing goal is reached. This greatly facilitates getting used to the new sound.

The Geno 2 CIC is not rechargeable. It still receives its power from size 10 disposable batteries, which need to be changed every few days.

The hearing aid is rated IP68. This guarantees comprehensive protection against dust ingress. Water is also not easily harmful to the hearing aid. Thus, it is well equipped for outdoor activities where it can get wet and dirty. However, do not necessarily go swimming or bathing with the hearing aids. Bath additives or the salt content in seawater can alter the composition and may ultimately cause damage.

Rating Simplicity & security: 2,8

Extras

At the end of our test report, there is still a bit of space for the extra features: We would have liked to discover a tinnitus program at this point, but unfortunately, there isn't one.

What about remote maintenance? Such online services save a trip to the specialist store because one can directly contact an acoustic professional through the app. Unfortunately, we couldn’t find anything like that for the Geno 2 CIC. Too bad, that would have been a great additional tool.

If Oticon had integrated motion sensors into this hearing aid, it could even allow for individual health tracking. However, that is not the case here. These points are lost for the Geno 2 CIC in the evaluation. It would have also been nice to have a few lifestyle functions, but they are not available in the Geno 2 CIC. Other hearing aids might score with language translators or fall alarms, but here it remains within the usual range of functions.

Conclusion: Oticon Geno 2 CIC

This test device ranks in the lower positions overall and lacks some features. We give it a score of 3.85. For casual listeners, this is acceptable, but for a very active lifestyle, we recommend a hearing aid with more extensive comfort features.
