The Oticon Geno 2 HDO in review
The Geno 2 HDO from Oticon is a traditional hearing aid that is worn behind the ear. The customer receives a discreet hearing aid from the basic price range, which can compensate for mild, moderate, and even severe hearing needs.
Hearing comfort
Good speech understanding is a given in modern hearing aids. Equally important is listening comfort. Only when the ratio of speech transmission to the level of background noise is right will hearing be perceived as pleasant. This is why we take a look at the comfort features: In the Geno 2 HDO, we find only the absolutely necessary features related to hearing comfort. Normal environmental noises such as traffic noise, the sound of a vacuum cleaner, or that of a fan should be dampened by classic noise suppression. In this Oticon hearing aid, the manufacturer has integrated a simple noise reduction, but it cannot be adjusted further.
A so-called pop filter would have been nice, as it would have made the clattering when emptying the dishwasher somewhat more bearable. But we have to do without that in the Geno 2 HDO. This hearing aid can recognize wind noise, but the reduction is barely noticeable. We miss a good spatial sound, but the automatic focus can indeed be helpful in situations with multiple people. We don't find the low number of frequency channels optimal. The device has only 6 of them, which leaves little room for adjustment during the initial programming and for long-term readjustment, and one probably has to accept some sound quality compromises.
Strategies based on artificial intelligence are not yet employed in this hearing aid from Oticon.

Operation & connectivity
Most hearing aids automatically adapt to their environment. However, it can sometimes be very practical to make some adjustments oneself. After all, the hearing aid does not know how you are feeling at the moment. We looked at the control options offered by the Geno 2 HDO: Usually, there is a button on the hearing aid, and we found one on the Geno 2 as well. It can be configured as a volume control or program selection button and can also be disabled if desired. We do like the small remote controls, and we found one for this model. This allows for discreet adjustments to the volume or sound.
Some hearing aids can already be controlled by voice, but this one from Oticon unfortunately cannot yet. That would be practical if your fingers are not very agile or if you simply like smart gadgets. Besides buttons or remote controls, some hearing aids also have tap control. This means you can just tap your ear briefly, and the device will switch modes. However, we do not have that here at Oticon, as it would have required specific sensors.
A suitable app is also provided to us. In everyday life, the app should suffice, but it does not offer much more than a volume function and access to various hearing programs. A very special comfort feature is the wireless connection in the hearing aid. You need nothing more than a small additional device, and you can stream sounds from your smartphone, tablet, or laptop to the hearing aids. Since mobile devices often only have mediocre speaker quality, this streaming function is a real advantage. The additional device is called a streamer. It is a small slim gadget that you can wear around your neck or clip onto your collar. It contains a powerful battery and a Bluetooth interface.

Simplicity & security
Now let's take a look at how the usage in everyday life is shaped. Is the handling easy? Do I receive a secure device? We do not necessarily experience easy, comfortable hearing with the Geno 2 HDO. In a quieter everyday life, one can manage quite well, but as soon as one has a varied hearing experience, one cannot avoid manual adjustments. Support during the acclimatization phase is very important to us in terms of simplicity. Especially after having heard poorly for years, it is sometimes difficult to perceive everything at a natural volume. Our test device has an acclimatization manager that helps us with very small volume adjustments throughout the adjustment phase. After a few weeks or months, we then reach the calculated amplification level.
Many hearing aids today have a rechargeable battery, but the Geno 2 HDO still operates with disposable batteries. This is somewhat cumbersome to handle and also burdens the environment.
While reviewing the documentation, we found a classification of IP 58. This makes the hearing aid quite resistant to external influences. Dust can hardly penetrate, and water has little chance as well. The hearing aid can even withstand immersion in water, as long as it is not more than 1.5 meters. However, still be careful. Soap solutions, saltwater, etc., have a different composition and can still cause damage.

Oticon Geno 2 HDO:
Extras
At the end of our test report, there is still a bit of space for the extra features: We would have liked to discover a tinnitus program at this point, but unfortunately, there isn't one.
An online contact to the audiologist via the app would be very useful. This is already quite common today and helps with minor adjustment issues. Unfortunately, Oticon does not offer this and thus does not earn any extra points.
Tracking health data is a real added value in modern hearing aids. However, this Oticon model lacks the sensors for this service. Other hearing aids already offer a few extended options like a fall alarm or reminder functions. We do not find this here, and that is not really dramatic, as the normal hearing functions are still the most important.

Conclusion: Oticon Geno 2 HDO
In the overall result, this test device ranks in the lower positions and lacks some features. We award a grade of 3.83. This is acceptable for less demanding listeners, but for a very active lifestyle, we recommend a hearing aid with more extensive comfort features.
