We are once again looking at a conventional hearing aid for moderate, severe, and changing hearing losses: This model is called Jet 1 BTE and comes from the company Oticon. It is worn behind the ear and is a small-sized hearing aid. The Jet 1 BTE is a model from the basic price segment. Let's see if the pricing classification is justified.

Hearing comfort

First, we looked at the comfort features. The better these are, the easier and more pleasant the listening experience becomes. In this hearing aid, we found very few options for comfort adjustments. The traditional noise reduction helps to lower uniform, insignificant sounds slightly. In the Jet 1 BTE, it has only a limited effect. When looking at the price, that could certainly be fitting. A slightly stronger wind reduction would be desirable, but the one in the Jet 1 BTE is certainly manageable.

When clattering, rattling noises occur, the Oticon device activates its impulse sound dampener. Nevertheless, these sounds remain quite intense. The microphone technology is kept quite simple. The hearing aids cannot create a true sense of space, as normal-hearing individuals experience. If one wants to assess directions or distances through hearing, one must be careful, as this is only reliable after a certain acclimatization period. With 10 frequency bands, we are not completely satisfied with the BTE, but it should be sufficient for uncomplicated hearing curves. The sound likely won't be entirely natural.

Strategies based on artificial intelligence are not yet implemented in this hearing aid from Oticon.

Operation & connectivity

Everyone has their own specific hearing needs. It is advantageous to be able to customize hearing aids beyond the automatic functions. During testing, we discovered the following access options: The simplest way to operate is always a button directly on the hearing aid. This one has it as well. It can be programmed according to your wishes. Do you want a manual volume control? No problem, the button allows for step-by-step volume adjustment. Or do you need different special programs for your professional daily life or hobbies? These can also be activated via the button. If you want to leave everything in automatic mode, you can simply ignore the button or even have it deactivated. A discreet way to change the hearing aid is with the remote control. It fits in any pocket. If the person you're talking to speaks too quietly again, just one or two clicks are enough to adjust the volume. Additional hearing programs for listening to music or driving can also be activated with the remote control.

We are always pleased when a hearing aid surprises us with a great additional feature. For example, we would have liked to see voice control at this point. But it is currently not available in the Jet 1 BTE. Some hearing aids can also be controlled with a quick tap of the finger, without having to press a button. However, this feature has not yet been implemented here.

A compatible app is also provided for us. In everyday life, the app should suffice, but it doesn't offer much more than a volume function and access to different hearing programs. One of the best features of the hearing aid is the direct streaming function. This turns the hearing aid into a TrueWireless headphone, receiving calls and other sounds directly in the ear. The prerequisite is a suitable smartphone that supports 2.4 GHz technology. The biggest advantage is that you can hear calls not just in one ear but in both. Additionally, the sound can be tailored to personal needs.

Simplicity & security

Now let's take a look at how usage is structured in everyday life. Is handling easy? Do I get a safe device? An automatic environmental adjustment would certainly be helpful in daily life, but unfortunately, it is not provided in the Jet 1 BTE. Therefore, we have to rely on manual adjustment options. The adaptation to the new hearing experience is supported by this device with a fully automatic acclimatization manager. It adjusts the amplification in barely noticeable steps until my hearing loss is fully compensated. I don't have to do anything other than regularly wear my hearing aids.

Jet 1 BTE relies on battery power instead of rechargeable batteries. Advantage: Very long battery life with a single battery. Unlike rechargeable solutions, you rarely have to worry about the power supply. Disadvantage: Waste is generated in the form of used batteries. This hearing aid uses a hearing aid battery size 13.

The Jet 1 is virtually dust- and water-resistant and, with its IP 68 classification, is certainly well protected against external influences.

Extras

Lastly, we are curious if there are any additional goodies on top: Here we noticed the tinnitus option. Those who wish can have a special tinnitus program set up. This can softly mask the annoying tinnitus with gentle noise to provide some distraction. The sounds can be tailored to personal listening preferences.

Oticon is keeping up with the times and offers a forward-looking feature with the remote fitting service. Working individuals with little time can contact their audiologist online and have their hearing aids reprogrammed. Hearing aid users who have a longer travel distance to the specialist store also benefit from this special service.

Many hearing aids today still come with a few health functions. However, since the Jet 1 BTE does not have any special sensors for this, we cannot present any particular features here. We were really impressed by the additional functions that the Jet 1 BTE offers. Various assistants support your daily life beyond hearing and can be configured in the app. Such hearing aids are hard to part with. By the way, these lifestyle functions are often still being worked on, so it is possible that they may change with updates.

In the overall result, this test device ranks in the lower positions and is missing some features. We give it a score of 3.66. This is acceptable for less demanding listeners, but for a very active lifestyle, we recommend a hearing aid with more extensive comfort features.
