We are once again looking at a conventional hearing aid for both mild and more significant hearing needs: This model is called Jet 2 BTE and comes from the company Oticon. It is worn behind the ear and is a discreet hearing aid. The Jet 2 BTE is a model from the basic class. Let's see if the pricing is justified.

Hearing comfort

What is most bothersome for hearing aid users? Exactly, background noise. That’s why we first take a look at what comfort features the test device contains. With the Jet 2 BTE, we find only the absolute essentials regarding hearing comfort. A normal noise suppression is definitely present. It is supposed to dampen constant sounds like street noise or the hum of the air conditioning. In our test device from Oticon, there is only a very slight noise reduction included.

Points are deducted for the lack of impulse noise suppression. Normally, this would suppress short, rattling noises. But those who choose this hearing aid should not let it bother them. A fairly solid wind management is available in the Jet 2 BTE and should be sufficient for everyday use. The number of equalizer bands is very important for adapting to hearing needs. The BTE only provides us with 8 and does not allow for many long-term fine-tuning options. We have to forgo spatial hearing with the Jet 2 BTE, but at least the microphones can be switched to a focus mode.

The signal processing is based, among other things, on typical frequency patterns of speech and noise, but artificial intelligence is not yet in use here.

Operation & connectivity

How can one fully exploit the potential of hearing aids in everyday life? We discovered the access options available with the Jet 2 BTE. Firstly, we found a button directly on the hearing aid. This is very sensible, as it is the easiest and fastest way to make adjustments. The volume can be adjusted through it, and different hearing programs can also be activated. If one prefers not to make any adjustments directly at the ear, the button can, of course, be deactivated. A discreet way to change the hearing aid is the remote control. It fits in any pocket. If the person you are speaking to is once again too quiet, one or two clicks are enough to adjust the volume. Additional hearing programs for listening to music or driving can also be activated with the remote control.

In the test, we did not find any option for voice control. This feature is not necessarily essential, but we would have appreciated it nonetheless. There is no control of the hearing aids with a simple tap in this Oticon model, as it would require specific sensors in the housing.

An app for individual operation is available free of charge. However, we only find basic functions here, which are useful but do not make the app particularly enjoyable. For our digital everyday life, a streaming option would be nice. The device at hand meets our request and includes a 2.4 GHz wireless module. This allows phone calls and sounds to be sent directly from the smartphone to the hearing aids.

Simplicity & security

Another point in our checklist is handling. Does everything work simply and reliably? What does the hearing aid offer to ensure safe application in everyday life? The first points in the simplicity chapter are forfeited by the Jet 2 BTE, as it lacks automatic situational adjustment. We have to adjust on our own until we can manage in the respective hearing situation. Some people find it difficult to get used to it, but this hearing aid makes it easy for us to cope with the new volume. There is a acclimatization manager that gradually introduces us to the required target amplification. The period can last a few weeks or even several months, which is individually adjustable. The individual steps are so small that one hardly notices that there was a volume increase.

The BTE of Jet 2 is powered by size 13 disposable batteries; it is not rechargeable. This has pros and cons. We have provided help here for the decision "battery or rechargeable": Rechargeable hearing aids or batteries: 6 criteria for your decision.

With an IP 68 certification, the hearing aid can withstand a variety of adverse conditions. Dust cannot penetrate, it can withstand prolonged submersion in water, and it is also protected against contact.

Extras

Finally, we want to know if the hearing aid perhaps offers any specials: We particularly liked the optional tinnitus program. There are quite a few people who are occasionally or frequently troubled by a whistling or buzzing in their ears. The tinnitus program in the Jet 2 BTE is basically just a sound generator. It aims to produce broad-band noises or sounds that gently and pleasantly stimulate all hearing areas. The tinnitus fades into the background and is no longer perceived as disturbing.

We find the remote maintenance service quite exciting. If one doesn’t have the opportunity to visit the audiologist, they can contact them through the app instead, briefly describe their hearing problem, and then receive a data package with a new hearing aid configuration. If it sounds good, they can upload it to their hearing aids.

Tracking health data is a real added value in modern hearing aids. However, this Oticon model lacks the sensors for this service. In conjunction with a smartphone, the Jet 2 BTE surprises us with a few nice lifestyle features. It's definitely worthwhile to familiarize oneself thoroughly with the app and to utilize the offered assistance programs.

In the overall result, this test device ranks in the lower positions and lacks some features. We give it a rating of 3.97. For less demanding listeners, this is acceptable, but for a very active lifestyle, we recommend a hearing aid with more extensive comfort features.
