The purchase of a hearing aid requires careful consideration, as it comes with a substantial price, and one hopes to enjoy it for many years. Therefore, we look at various parameters and provide you with the results of our product tests. This report focuses on the Jet PX 1 IIC from Oticon. It is a small, hardly noticeable hearing aid from a still moderate price category and suitable for almost every hearing need. It is worn in the ear. Due to the concealed position in the rear ear canal section, it offers quite good acoustic sound properties right from the start.

Hearing comfort

At least as important as speech understanding is listening comfort. After all, our environment should sound as realistic and pleasant as possible. So let's take a look at noise management: In this model that Oticon offers, we found very few options for influencing comfort. Of course, there is noise suppression integrated, which is supposed to reduce tiring background noise. In the Jet PX 1 IIC, the effectiveness of the noise suppression is slightly above the required minimum. Nevertheless, the sounds will still be audible. We found a basic wind noise detection system, but unfortunately, there is nothing adjustable there.

According to the manufacturer, impulse noise suppression is integrated, but we could hardly feel it. Hearing aids like the Jet PX 1 IIC maintain the natural spatial feeling we have experienced since childhood. The function of the outer ear, head size, head shadow effects - all these parameters create true, original 3D hearing. We always take a close look at the number of equalizer bands. They are important for adapting the sound of a hearing aid as accurately as possible to the hearing curve. Additionally, speech noise management also takes place within these bands. The Jet PX 1 IIC has 14 of them. That's okay.

Oticon is not yet using artificial intelligence in this version.

Operation & connectivity

Digital hearing aids have long evolved beyond the normal amplification function. Apps and other control options significantly expand the range of features, which is why we are also looking at this important topic with the Jet PX 1 IIC from Oticon. Usually, there is a button on the hearing aid, and we have found it on the Jet PX 1 as well. It can be configured as a volume control or program selection button and can also be deactivated if desired. Unfortunately, this hearing aid cannot be adjusted via a remote control – so a few points are lost here.

In the test, we did not find any option for voice control. This function is not necessarily required but would have pleased us nonetheless. Some hearing aids can also be controlled with a simple tap of the finger, without the need to press an extra button. However, this feature has not yet been implemented here.

Quickly increasing the volume via the app - unfortunately, that is not possible with the Jet PX 1 IIC. An app is not available for this purpose. However, this is irrelevant if you are not a smartphone user anyway. The smartphone cannot be connected to the hearing aid, as the necessary equipment with a radio antenna is unfortunately missing.

Simplicity & security

Now let's briefly talk about everyday practicality. Is the Jet PX 1 IIC user-friendly and easy to handle? Does it have water protection? Here are our findings: Unfortunately, the simple listening capabilities of the Jet PX 1 IIC are not very good. The situational automatism is quite basic, so we receive little support when it gets loud around us. This can be compensated for by using the manual adjustment options. However, that hardly scores any points in terms of simplicity. We give a big plus point for the automatic acclimatization assistant. It raises the starting volume in very small steps until my hearing goal is reached. This significantly eases the adjustment to the new sound.

Unfortunately, the Jet PX 1 IIC is not equipped with a rechargeable battery, so regular size 10 batteries are needed for operation.

With an IP 68 certification, the hearing aid can resist various adverse influences. Dust cannot penetrate, it withstands prolonged immersion in water, and it is also protected against contact.

Extras

The finale belongs to the extras, meaning small additional features that could score extra points for the hearing aid: A special tinnitus program can be programmed upon request in the Jet PX 1 IIC. This can generate stimulating, pleasant sounds that distract from the tinnitus when it is particularly strong. We find this very useful and are happy to award extra points.

Online services are becoming increasingly taken for granted. There is often a remote maintenance service for hearing aids as well. However, Oticon has not yet provided this for its Jet PX 1 IIC. Therefore, one has to go to the specialist shop each time they want to have their hearing aid programmed differently. No extra point for that.

A new trend in the hearing aid industry is integrated sensors that can track, for example, some personal health data. However, the Jet PX 1 IIC does not offer this. This Oticon hearing aid lacks any additional lifestyle options. Other brands have voice assistants or reminder functions, but you don't need that for good hearing. It would have just made the product a bit cooler.

With an overall grade of 3.4, this model holds its ground in the mid-range. It has a quite decent comfort feature set on board, which is sufficient for typical everyday moments and creates a satisfactory listening experience.
