The Oticon Own 1 IIC in review
Here we take a look at a hearing aid from the premium category that is worn in the ear. It is called Own 1 IIC and comes from the manufacturer Oticon. It can be used by anyone with mild to moderate and fluctuating hearing losses who desires a lightweight, almost invisible and barely noticeable hearing aid. Its concealed position in the back section of the ear canal provides very good sound quality.
Hearing comfort
At least as important as speech understanding is listening comfort. After all, we want our environment to sound as realistic and pleasant as possible. So let's take a look at the noise management: In this model, which Oticon offers here, we were impressed by the excellent noise management. Of course, noise suppression is integrated to dampen exhausting background noises. The Own 1 IIC features quite respectable noise cancellation. Even when it gets louder, the listening experience remains pleasant. There is no wind management here. However, this is completely fine because the positioning directly in the ear canal already provides a natural protection against wind noise.
We are pleased to find a good and efficient impulse sound dampening here. This is definitely useful in everyday life, as it noticeably absorbs sounds like door slamming, clattering dishes, or similarly jarring noises. Spatial hearing occurs naturally with the Own 1 IIC. Due to its special placement deep in the ear canal, the function of the outer ear is preserved, and there are no losses in directional hearing. We found an impressive 24 equalizer bands in the Own 1 IIC. In each band, the hearing aid activates its noise management, filters out the disturbing components, and retains important speech elements. Sound changes can be targeted and precisely adjusted. We are very satisfied with this. Especially with sharp or steeply declining hearing curves, such a hearing aid can be very beneficial.
One component in the signal processing of the Own 1 IIC is artificial intelligence. The influence is positive, as many customers find conversations in noisy situations significantly more relaxed.

Oticon Own 1 IIC:
Operation & connectivity
Most functions are automatically activated by this Oticon model. However, it can be very useful to extend the range of functions a bit. In our test, we found out what options we have here. There is no control element directly on the hearing aid. Due to space constraints, a button is sometimes omitted. Unfortunately, this hearing aid cannot be adjusted with a remote control – a few points are lost there.
Some hearing aids can already be controlled by voice, but this one from Oticon unfortunately cannot yet. It would be practical when fingers are not as mobile anymore or when someone simply likes smart gadgets. Tap Control would have also been an interesting feature. This allows changing the function with a quick tap on the ear. But that's not yet available in the Own 1 IIC.
We missed an app for the Own 1 IIC during the test. If controlling via smartphone is important to you, you should look for another model. There is no option for connecting to other audio sources here. It's a pity because a wireless streaming function would have offered real added value.
Rating Operation & connectivity: 3,8

Simplicity & security
How does one cope with a hearing aid in everyday life? This is the next aspect we will evaluate. Because only if such a device works simply and easily can one get used to it. Typical hearing situations that everyone experiences in their environment are reliably recognized and adjusted through automatic settings. However, for more specific, recurring requirements, one cannot avoid using the manual hearing programs. The integrated acclimatization manager can be of great help to you when entering the world of hearing aids. Its task is to gradually increase the volume of the hearing aid in tiny steps until the target volume is reached. This way, you can relax and gradually get used to the new auditory experiences. More information on acclimatization and other hearing aids with this feature can be found here: Acclimatization to Hearing Aids.
The IIC from Own 1 operates with 10-pack disposable batteries; it is not rechargeable. This has its pros and cons. For the decision "Rechargeable or battery," we have provided help here: Rechargeable Hearing Aids or Batteries: 6 Criteria for Your Decision.
With an IP 68 certification, the hearing aid can withstand various adverse influences. Dust cannot penetrate, it can withstand longer submersion in water, and it is also protected against contact.

Oticon Own 1 IIC:
Extras
Finally, let's take a quick look at whether there are any extras: We really liked the optional tinnitus program. There are quite a few people who are occasionally or frequently plagued by a ringing or buzzing in their ears. The tinnitus program in the Own 1 IIC is essentially just a sound generator. Its purpose is to produce broad-spectrum noises or sounds that gently and pleasantly stimulate all areas of hearing. The tinnitus fades into the background and is no longer perceived as disturbing.
What about remote maintenance? Such online services save the trip to the specialist store because you can directly contact an acoustic professional via the app. Unfortunately, we did not find this option for the Own 1 IIC. That's a pity; it would have been a great additional tool.
Tracking health data is a real added value in modern hearing aids. However, this Oticon model lacks the sensors for this service. With devices like this one from Oticon, our test reports keep getting longer, as there are now also intelligent additional functions. Various assistants make your life easier and are personalized in the app. While it's not absolutely necessary, it is a lot of fun. For this, we give it a good rating.
