We tested a delicate, barely noticeable top-class hearing aid this time. It is the Bernafon Encanta 400 IIC. It is worn in the ear and is intended for mild, moderate, and even severe hearing needs. The placement in the ear canal, very close to the eardrum, is thanks to its design, which is why it delivers a beautiful, clear sound.
Hearing comfort
Our first test category is listening comfort. Actually, we could also say sound comfort, because that's what it's mainly about. Does the hearing aid sound very technical or beautifully natural? Are too many background noises amplified, or do they stay nicely in the background? In this device from Bernafon, we were impressed by the excellent sound management. The noise suppression is a very traditional feature; it filters out all chaotic, uniform sounds from the environment and reduces their loudness. In the Encanta 400 IIC, we find really strong noise suppression that makes listening extremely pleasant.
Wind noise is only perceived as bothersome when it directly hits a hearing aid microphone. However, since this model from Bernafon sits very deep in the ear canal, that can't happen. This device is therefore perfect for outdoor enthusiasts. Moreover, we are surprised at how well the impulse sound management works here. Nothing crashes, nothing rattles – very good! A brilliant listening experience is not least based on the number of frequency bands. The more bands there are, and the narrower the individual frequency channels, the better the hearing aid can be adjusted to individual preferences. Here, we have as many as 24 bands. This allows for not only a great sound impression but also very careful speech and noise suppression. Spatial hearing with the Encanta 400 IIC occurs in a completely natural way. Due to its unique placement deep in the ear canal, the function of the outer ear remains intact, and there are no compromises in directional hearing.
Artificial intelligence is also used in the signal processing of the Encanta 400 IIC. This leads to a much more realistic analysis of the listening environment, and above all, clarity in noisy surroundings is significantly better.

Operation & connectivity
Basically, the hearing aids work fully automatically, and that is also the mode that most people prefer. Sometimes, however, it is quite useful to switch to another hearing program or simply adjust the volume in a difficult situation. Therefore, let's take a brief look at the operating options of the Encanta 400 IIC. We searched in vain for a button as a quick access option. It has probably fallen victim to the small form factor. This is manageable, as the hearing aid makes most settings automatically anyway. There is no remote control for this model, which we find very disappointing.
Some hearing aids can already be controlled by voice, but unfortunately this one from Bernafon cannot yet. It would be practical if fingers are not as nimble anymore or if one simply likes smart gadgets. Tap Control would have been an interesting feature as well. With that, you can change the function with a quick tap on the ear. But this is not yet available in the Encanta 400 IIC.
An additional app for individual operation would be nice, but it is currently not offered for this hearing aid. A wireless connection to a smartphone or laptop is not possible, as the necessary hardware components are missing. You should think carefully about whether you can do without this feature, but why not just give it a try?

How does one manage with a hearing aid in everyday life? This is the next aspect we need to evaluate. Because only when such a device works easily and uncomplicated can one become accustomed to it. With top-class situational recognition, the Encanta 400 IIC has completely convinced us. The hearing aid seamlessly adapts to the acoustic environment and requires our intervention almost never. Hearing feels completely normal. Some people find it difficult to adjust, but this hearing aid makes it easy for us to cope with the new volume. There is an acclimatization manager that gradually leads us to the required target amplification. This period can last a few weeks or even several months, and it can be individually adjusted. The individual steps are so small that you hardly notice that there has been an increase in volume.
The Encanta 400 IIC relies on battery power instead of rechargeable batteries. Advantage: very long runtime with one battery. Unlike rechargeable solutions, you only have to deal with the power supply very rarely. Disadvantage: Waste is generated in the form of used batteries. This hearing aid uses a hearing aid battery size 10.
With IP 68 certification, the hearing aid can withstand various adverse influences. Dust cannot penetrate, it withstands prolonged submersion in water, and it is also protected against contact.

Sometimes there are additional features in hearing aids that can be quite useful. Let's see how it is with this Bernafon device: Manufacturers often implement a tinnitus program in their hearing aids to mitigate the annoying ringing. However, Bernafon has left this feature out in this model. That's unfortunate because it would be a real added benefit for many people.
A nice feature would be a remote maintenance service, allowing you to get help from a hearing specialist even when you cannot visit the store. But unfortunately, this is not available here, so there is no extra point for that.
There are no sensors in this Encanta 400 variant, so popular health tracking cannot be offered. For example, steps are counted throughout the day. As mentioned - this hearing aid does not have this function onboard. The hearing aid also does not include additional features such as special assistance systems, a fall alarm, or language translators. This is not too problematic as it does not affect important hearing functions.
