The Oticon Own SI 1 IIC in review

In this test report, we take a look at the Own SI 1 IIC. It was developed by Oticon and covers moderate, stronger, and changing hearing losses. This variant is worn in the ear. The Own SI 1 IIC is a miniature hearing aid from the premium segment, about 1 cm long. We achieve clean sound transmission due to the wearing position just a few millimeters in front of the eardrum.

Hearing comfort

In the section on hearing comfort, we look at how a hearing aid handles all the background noises. A comfortable noise management system significantly contributes to whether a user likes and regularly wears their hearing aids. We were impressed with the excellent sound management of this Oticon device. The regular noise suppression feature is designed to reduce uniform, noise-like background sounds. The Own SI 1 IIC integrates a highly effective and adjustable noise reduction system, making listening very comfortable even in challenging environments.

Once you have experienced impulse sound suppression in a hearing aid, you don't want to give it up. The Own SI 1 IIC has such a feature and can effortlessly handle all short and intense sound events. This includes, for example, the clinking of dishes in the kitchen or footsteps on a hard floor. Wind noise is not a concern with this hearing aid, as the microphones are hidden deep in the ear canal, preventing wind from affecting them. Therefore, there is no need for an electronic wind manager here. Spatial hearing with the Own SI 1 IIC occurs quite naturally. Due to its unique placement deep in the ear canal, the function of the outer ear is preserved, and there are no compromises in directional hearing. The number of frequency bands is very important for good speech noise discrimination. With 24 frequency bands, this hearing aid is among the top options and offers excellent adjustment possibilities.

One component in the signal processing of the Own SI 1 IIC is artificial intelligence. The influence is positive, as many customers find conversations in noisy situations significantly more relaxed.

Operation & connectivity

Most hearing aids automatically adjust to their environment. Nevertheless, it is sometimes very practical to be able to make some changes yourself. After all, the hearing aid does not know how you are feeling at the moment. We took a look at the control options offered by the Own SI 1 IIC: Unfortunately, this hearing aid lacks a direct control option. This is probably due to its small size. However, this does not have to be a disadvantage, as the automatic functions are often sufficient. Unfortunately, there is no remote control available for this model, which we find very disappointing.

Some hearing aids can already be controlled by voice, but this one from Oticon cannot yet. This would be practical when fingers are not as mobile or if you simply like smart gadgets. Another option for controlling the hearing aids is a tapping control. This involves simply tapping your fingers on your ear, which triggers a certain function. But this feature is not available in this Oticon device.

In the app store, we searched in vain for an app for further adjustments, which we would have wished for differently. The smartphone cannot connect to the hearing aid, as it unfortunately lacks the necessary equipment with a radio antenna.

Rating Operation & connectivity: 3,8

Simplicity & security

Our analysis also addresses the everyday usability of hearing aids. This includes durability, as well as special comfort features designed to make daily use as easy as possible. A balanced automatic program is the most important aspect we consider when it comes to simplicity. After all, no one wants to constantly adjust their hearing aid. The Own SI 1 IIC has proven in tests that it accompanies us comfortably and reliably throughout our hearing day. With its excellent full automation, this device is a real highlight. The integrated acclimatization manager can be of great help as you enter the world of hearing aids. Its task is to gradually raise the volume of the hearing aid in tiny increments until the target volume is reached. This way, you can relax and gradually get used to the new sounds. More information on acclimatization and other hearing aids with this feature can be found here: Acclimatization to Hearing Aids.

The IIC from Own SI 1 operates on 10-piece disposable batteries; it is not rechargeable. This has its advantages and disadvantages. We have provided a guide for the "Battery or Rechargeable" decision here: Rechargeable Hearing Aids or Batteries: 6 Criteria for Your Decision.

We enjoyed a carefree everyday life during our test due to its IP-68 certification. This signifies that the hearing aid is particularly well protected against dust and water. We marched through the rain and then took the hearing aids out with wet hands - all no problem. However, the water resistance really only applies to fresh, natural water and not to soapy bathwater or seawater.

Rating Simplicity & security: 1,8

Extras

We complete the test by checking if there are any extras for you: Tinnitus is a topic for many people, but unfortunately, this hearing aid does not have a special tinnitus sound program. So we cannot award an extra point here. In mobile times like these, a remote servicing option via an app would be very helpful. This way, one could comfortably have a new hearing aid programming created from home. Unfortunately, this service is not available for the Own SI 1 IIC. Therefore, any requested changes still require a visit to the specialist shop. If Oticon had integrated motion sensors into this hearing aid, individual health tracking could even be possible. However, this is not the case here. These points are lost for the Own SI 1 IIC in the evaluation. The device from Oticon focuses on essential hearing functions and does not offer extras like voice assistants or translation features. While that would have been fun, it is not necessary for a good listening experience.
