The Oticon Jet PX 2 ITC in review

Here we take a look at a hearing aid available at a relatively low price, designed to be worn in the ear. It's called Jet PX 2 ITC and comes from the manufacturer Oticon. It can be used by individuals with mild, moderate, and even severe hearing loss who desire a fairly small hearing aid. Due to its position in the front part of the ear canal, it has very good sound characteristics.

Hearing comfort

First, we evaluate the hearing comfort features. What types of noises does the hearing aid recognize? How does it handle them? Is the hearing aid suitable for a varied everyday life? Here with this test device, we find only the absolute essentials regarding hearing comfort. As in all hearing aids, we also find the typical noise reduction here. It is supposed to reduce monotonous, noisy background sounds to the point where they no longer stand out. The Jet PX 2 ITC has only a very slight, non-adjustable noise reduction implemented.

The device from Oticon can also recognize wind noise, but this results in only a very minimal noise reduction. For normal everyday paths, that is sufficient, but real outdoor enthusiasts will not be satisfied with this. A so-called snap filter would have been nice; it would have made the clattering when emptying the dishwasher a bit more bearable. But we have to do without that on the Jet PX 2 ITC. We always take a close look at the number of equalizer bands. They are important to match the sound of a hearing aid as closely as possible to the hearing curve. Additionally, speech noise management also takes place within these bands. The Jet PX 2 ITC has 12 of them. That’s okay. Unfortunately, spatial hearing is not very advanced. The hearing aids can focus forward, but this does not help when trying to determine from which direction a car is coming or where someone is calling from.

Oticon does not yet work with artificial intelligence in this version.

Operation & connectivity

The majority of functions are activated automatically by this Oticon model. However, it can be very useful to expand the range of features a bit. In our test, we discovered what options we have here. For those who want to quickly and easily adjust the volume, there is a button on the device. Additionally, further programs for special hearing situations can be selected through it. The small remote control, which is optionally available, is very practical. For us, this is one of the most comfortable ways to increase or decrease the volume or switch to another hearing program. No one notices, and there is no need to touch the ear.

The modern method of operation via voice command is not yet found in the Jet PX 2 ITC. Tap Control would have been an interesting feature as well. With it, you could change the function with a quick tap on the ear. But this is not available in the Jet PX 2 ITC yet.

The manual operation includes an app. This allows for discreet access to the hearing aid. In addition to volume control, you can also adjust hearing programs and a few other functions. Problems when making phone calls with a smartphone are a thing of the past with this device. Phone calls, music, and other sounds are completely wirelessly transmitted to the hearing aids. Headphones become unnecessary. We tested the wireless transmission during longer phone calls and for listening to music while exercising. Everything worked smoothly and easily. Only a compatible smartphone with 2.4 GHz wireless technology is required.

Simplicity & security

In the next step, we want to address the topic of user-friendliness. Is the Jet PX 2 ITC easy to use? Is it weather-resistant? Do you have to do a lot to get used to it? Here are our answers: The first points in the chapter on simplicity are missed by the Jet PX 2 ITC, as it does not have automatic gain adjustment. We have to manually adjust it until we manage in the respective hearing situation. Some people find it difficult to get used to it, but this hearing aid makes it easy for us to cope with the new volume. There is a familiarization manager that gradually leads us to the required target amplification. The period can last a few weeks or even several months, and this is individually adjustable. The individual steps are so small that you hardly notice that there has been a volume increase.

Zinc-air batteries power the Jet PX 2 ITC. Changing the battery may become quite cumbersome for people with limited dexterity or vision. If you have concerns about this, you might want to look for a rechargeable model instead.

The data sheet certifies the Oticon device with a rating of IP68. This makes it one of the most resilient hearing aids on the market. Dust has no chance, and water does not penetrate the casing as long as it is not submerged deeper than 1.5 meters. However, be careful. Shampoo, for example, alters the surface tension of water. You should also avoid saltwater. In everyday life, however, you can behave quite carefreely.

Extras

Sometimes there are additional features in hearing aids that can be quite useful. Let's see how it is with this Oticon device: Oticon has integrated a noise generator that plays some soothing sounds for those suffering from tinnitus. This can distract from the tinnitus and provide a bit more relaxation.

A very good added benefit comes from the offer of remote maintenance. Through the app, you can contact your hearing care professional and describe your hearing issue. They can then adjust the settings accordingly and load them into the hearing aids via the app. For people with little time or a long commute, this is a great service.

For health-conscious individuals, there is a small feature in the Jet PX 2 ITC: health tracking. For example, steps can be counted throughout the day, and you receive feedback on your own activity level. Sensors in the hearing aid track the individual data, which can then be accessed in the app. Some other hearing aids already have a few advanced options like a fall alert or reminder functions. We don't find that here, and that's not so dramatic, as the normal hearing functions are still the most important.

With a final grade of 3.26, this model stands its ground in the mid-range. It has quite a decent comfort equipment on board, sufficient for typical everyday moments and creates a satisfying listening experience.
