The Oticon Own 1 CIC in review

Could this hearing aid from the Oticon program be the right one for you? In our test report on the Own 1 CIC, we have highlighted the key aspects. We have a very small hearing aid of the highest quality that is worn in the ear. Because of the audiologically sensible position directly in the ear canal, the foundation for good hearing success is laid, as the sound has only a very short distance to travel to the eardrum. This ensures that all sounds actually reach the place where we want them.

The Own 1 CIC provides sufficient amplification for moderate, stronger, and fluctuating hearing losses.

Hearing comfort

The listening comfort determines whether someone likes to wear their hearing aids or not. That is why we first looked at how the hearing aid handles background noise. In this model, which Oticon presents to us, the manufacturer provides customers with comprehensive sound management. Of course, noise suppression is integrated to reduce strenuous background noises. The Own 1 CIC has a very effective noise suppression implemented. It can be adjusted by the audiologist to fit individual sensitivities and delivers just the level of attenuation that the customer desires. This makes you well-equipped for demanding listening environments. We rate the wind management as average here, but it works.

The suppression of short, loud sound events has convinced us here; it is quite powerful. 3D hearing is very important for a natural impression. The device leaves nothing to be desired in this regard and impressed us in this aspect. For a precise, realistic listening experience, the number of adjustable frequency bands is of great importance. With 24, this Oticon device is a true top model and allows for differentiated fine-tuning over several years.

Even in hearing aids, the use of artificial intelligence has made its way, for example here in the Own 1 CIC. This offers a lot more data to identify speech and noise. In our experience, the sound of hearing aids with AI is perceived as particularly precise and realistic.

Operation & connectivity

How can one fully utilize the potential of hearing aids in everyday life? We found out what access options are available with the Own 1 CIC. First, we discovered a button directly on the hearing aid. This is very useful because it is the easiest and fastest way to make changes. The volume can be adjusted with it, and different listening programs can also be activated. If you prefer not to adjust anything directly at the ear, you can of course deactivate the button. Remote controls for hearing aids are now actually common, but Oticon has not provided one for this device.

The modern method of control via voice command is not yet found in the Own 1 CIC. In addition to buttons or remote controls, some hearing aids also have a tap control. This means you can simply tap your ear briefly, and the device will switch. However, we do not have this feature here at Oticon; certain specific sensors would have been needed for that.

In the app store, we searched in vain for an app for further adjustments, which we had hoped for differently. Unfortunately, wireless connectivity options are completely lacking in this variant. This is no longer quite up to date, but it is likely due to the small size of the hearing aid.

Rating Operation & connectivity: 3,5

Simplicity & security

Another point on our checklist is usability. Does everything work easily and reliably? What does the hearing aid offer to ensure safe use in everyday life? The Own 1 CIC features an extensive set of stored hearing situations. When a typical pattern is recognized, the hearing aid automatically activates the correct setting. The adaptation to the new hearing experience is supported by a fully automatic acclimatization manager. It adjusts the amplification in barely noticeable steps until my hearing loss is completely balanced. I only need to wear my hearing aids regularly.

The Own 1 CIC is not rechargeable. It operates on size 10 hearing aid batteries. Disadvantage: The batteries are disposed of after use. Advantage: There is no need for daily charging of batteries; the hearing aid operates continuously for several days on a single battery.

The Own 1 is virtually dustproof and waterproof and, with its IP 68 classification, is certainly well protected against external influences.

Extras

Everyone appreciates a few extra features, so let's see if we can find some here: Oticon has integrated a noise generator that plays soothing sounds for those suffering from tinnitus. This can distract from the tinnitus and provide a bit more relaxation.

An online contact with the audiologist through the app would be very useful. This is quite common today and provides assistance with small adjustment issues. Unfortunately, Oticon does not offer this and therefore does not earn any extra points.

There are no sensors in this Own 1 variant, which means that the popular health tracking cannot be offered. For example, steps throughout the day are counted. As mentioned - this hearing aid does not have this function available. In conjunction with a smartphone, the Own 1 CIC surprises us with a few nice lifestyle features. It's definitely worth getting thoroughly acquainted with the app and utilizing the offered assistance programs.
