The Oticon Own 2 ITC in review

Oticon offers the Own 2 ITC, a small hearing aid that is worn in the ear. It is a hearing aid from the premium price segment and is suitable for mild, moderate, and also severe hearing losses. The sound outlet close to the eardrum ensures that sound reaches the eardrum without losses.

Hearing comfort

In the Hearing Comfort section, we take a look at how a hearing aid handles all the background noise. A comfortable noise management system significantly contributes to a user liking and regularly wearing their hearing aids. With this Oticon device, the manufacturer provides the customer with comprehensive noise management. The regular noise suppression is designed to mitigate uniform, intrusive ambient noises. In the Own 2 ITC, there is quite a respectable noise suppression. Even when it gets louder, the hearing impression still remains pleasant.

Impulsive sounds are also detected by this device and are reduced to a tolerable level. There is also wind management. We find this very good, as many people enjoy being outdoors. The reduction of wind noise occurs at a medium level here. The spatial hearing has convinced us in everyday life. Although it is not true 3D hearing, one quickly forgets this when wearing the hearing aids. Very important for good speech noise distinction is the number of frequency bands. With 20, this hearing aid is right at the front and offers excellent adjustment options.

One component in the signal processing of the Own 2 ITC is artificial intelligence. The impact is positive because many customers find conversations in noisy situations to be significantly more relaxed.

Operation & connectivity

Digital hearing aids have long evolved beyond the standard amplification function. Apps and other control options significantly expand their functionality, which is why we are also looking at this important topic in the Own 2 ITC from Oticon. There is a button directly on the hearing aid. This allows you to change the volume or activate additional hearing programs. It can be programmed according to customer preferences. The use is, of course, optional. A remote control is available for the Own 2 ITC. It's quite practical, fits in your pocket, and offers a volume control option as well as various hearing programs.

The modern form of voice command control is not yet found in the Own 2 ITC. In addition to buttons or remote controls, some hearing aids have a tap control feature. This means you can simply tap your ear briefly, and the device will switch. However, we don't have that here at Oticon; it would have required specific sensors.

A manual control option includes an app. This allows discreet access to the hearing aid. In addition to volume control, you can also adjust hearing programs and a few other functions. Problems with phone calls using a smartphone are a thing of the past with this device. Calls, music, and other sounds are completely wirelessly transmitted to the hearing aids. Headphones become unnecessary. We tested the wireless transmission during longer phone calls and for listening to music while exercising. Everything worked smoothly and fluidly. Only a compatible smartphone with 2.4 GHz wireless technology is needed.

Simplicity & security

Usability is the next aspect we want to focus on. This is about everyday practicality and the question of how easy and safe it is to navigate life with the hearing aid. A reliable automatic situation detection gives the Own 2 ITC important points in terms of simplicity. Most hearing situations are well recognized, so manual adjustments are rarely necessary. The adjustment to the new hearing experience is supported by this device with a fully automatic acclimatization manager. It gradually adjusts the amplification in hardly noticeable steps until my hearing loss is completely compensated. I don't have to do anything else but wear my hearing aids regularly.

Own 2 ITC is not equipped with a rechargeable battery. It uses a hearing aid battery of size 312 as its power supply. It needs to be replaced every few days.

We experienced an untroubled everyday life in our test thanks to the IP-68 certification. This indicates that the hearing aid is particularly well protected against dust and water. We marched through the rain and then took out the hearing aids with wet hands - no problem at all. However, the water resistance really only applies to fresh, natural water and not to foamy bathwater or saltwater.

Extras

Before we reach the conclusion, let's take a look at the extras: Oticon has integrated a noise generator that plays some soothing sounds for those suffering from tinnitus. This can distract from the tinnitus and provide a bit more relaxation.

The option for remote adjustment is really great. It's very helpful whenever you want to make just a small change to the hearing aid settings but don't want to drive to the audiologist. Instead, you contact them through the app, and the hearing professional sends back a customized data package in the same way.

If Oticon had integrated motion sensors into this hearing aid, it could even enable individual health tracking. However, this is not the case here. These points are a loss for the Own 2 ITC in the evaluation. There are still a few small highlights in this Oticon device. Depending on what your smartphone supports, you can set reminders for appointments, access Siri, or use other assistance systems. This definitely earns an extra point.
