The Oticon Own 3 IIC in review

This test report is about the Own 3 IIC. It was developed by Oticon and addresses both mild and more severe hearing needs. This variant is worn in the ear. The Own 3 IIC is a miniature hearing aid approximately 1 cm long, coming from a still moderate price category. The clear sound transmission is achieved through the hidden wearing position in the back part of the ear canal.

Hearing comfort

The listening comfort determines whether someone enjoys wearing their hearing aids or not. That's why we first looked at how the hearing aid manages background noise. In this model presented by Oticon, the manufacturer provides the customer with comprehensive noise management. Naturally, noise suppression is integrated, which is intended to soften tiring background sounds. The Own 3 IIC isn't necessarily a high-performance variant, but in most listening situations, the noise suppression should be sufficient. Those who enjoy being outdoors will like this Oticon device. Normally, wind noise can be somewhat bothersome. However, in this case, it doesn't play a role because the outer ear provides good mechanical protection.

During our test, we also discovered impulse sound control. Short, popping sounds are dampened by this feature. It works reasonably well here, but we are not in the top class. The Own 3 IIC impresses us with its natural, spatial hearing. The outer ear retains its function, creating the 3D feeling as if one is not wearing a hearing aid at all. 18 adjustable equalizer bands provide enough room to generate a reliable, customized listening experience.

Artificial intelligence has also made its way into hearing aids, such as here in the Own 3 IIC. This means a lot more data is available to identify speech and noise. In our experience, the sound of hearing aids with AI is perceived as particularly precise and realistic.

Operation & connectivity

Almost everyone of us owns a smartphone, so the question arises whether it can also be connected to the new hearing aid. Let's take a look at the connectivity and usability of the Own 3 IIC. First, we are interested in whether there is a button on the device. Unfortunately, we will be disappointed with the IIC; there is no immediate adjustment option. Remote controls for hearing aids are actually common today, but Oticon has not provided one for this device.

We are always pleased when a hearing aid surprises us with a great additional feature. For example, we would have liked to see voice control at this point. However, there is currently no voice control in the Own 3 IIC. Some hearing aids can also be controlled with a quick tap of the finger, without needing to press an extra button. This feature, however, has not yet been implemented here.

In the App Store, we searched in vain for an app for further adjustments, which we would have hoped for. The smartphone cannot be connected to the hearing aid, as the requisite equipment with a wireless antenna is unfortunately missing.

Simplicity & security

Now let's take a look at how the usage unfolds in everyday life. Is the handling easy? Do I get a secure device? We don't necessarily experience simple, comfortable listening with the Own 3 IIC. In a quieter daily routine, one can manage quite well, but as soon as you have a varied listening experience, manual adjustments become unavoidable. We are very pleased about the integrated acclimatization manager. It gradually increases the hearing aid's volume in tiny steps until our target amplification is eventually reached. We can relax and gradually get used to the new auditory impressions.

Unfortunately, the Own 3 IIC is not equipped with a rechargeable battery, so regular size 10 batteries are required for operation.

The Own 3 is nearly dust and waterproof and, with its IP 68 classification, is certainly well protected against external influences.

Finally, we want to know if the hearing aid might offer any specials: Here we have noticed the tinnitus option. Those who wish can have a special tinnitus program set up. This gently introduces a soft noise in the ears to distract from the annoying tinnitus. The sounds can be customized according to personal hearing preferences.

Online services are becoming increasingly common. There is often a remote maintenance service for hearing aids as well. However, Oticon has not yet provided this for its Own 3 IIC. Therefore, one has to go to the specialist shop every time they want to reprogram their hearing aid. No extra point for that.

Many hearing aids today still come with a few health functions. However, since the Own 3 IIC does not have any special sensors for this, we cannot present any special features here. Digital algorithms and suitable apps increasingly allow for the integration of lifestyle functions that support your daily life. We are impressed by what hearing aids like this one from Oticon can do today. Be sure to give it a try!
