The Oticon Own 4 IIC in review

This test report is about the Own 4 IIC. It was developed by Oticon and caters to both mild and stronger hearing needs. This variant is worn in the ear. The Own 4 IIC is a miniature hearing aid approximately 1 cm long and falls into a price range slightly above the average. We achieve clear sound transmission through the perfect, very deep placement in the ear canal.

Hearing comfort

Hearing aids are designed not only to bring speech to the ear but also to sound pleasant. So let's first look at the comfort features. What types of noise does the hearing aid recognize? Are they dampened or transmitted unchanged? Is the hearing aid suitable for a lively everyday life? Here, with this test device, the manufacturer provides the customer with comprehensive noise management. Like every hearing aid, it includes typical noise cancellation. It aims to reduce uniform, rustling ambient noises to the point where they no longer dominate. With the Own 4 IIC, we find rather below-average noise suppression. Noise-sensitive individuals may need to make some compromises regarding hearing comfort.

A wind manager is not necessary for this model. It is hidden in the ear canal and naturally protected from the wind by the outer ear. An impulse sound filter is also said to be implemented. However, it only dampens short, rattling sounds very minimally, which is not particularly helpful. With 14 frequency bands, you can already set a fairly good sound. A passionate musician may not be fully satisfied with this, but this number is completely sufficient for normal hearing and sound needs. With the Own 4 IIC, you do not need to reconstruct 3D hearing, as it remains completely intact. This is made possible by the deep seating in the ear canal.

By the way, you may perceive the sound from this Oticon device as clearer and more natural, especially in noisy environments. This is likely due to the implemented artificial intelligence. The hearing aid has already been trained with millions of real sounds, leading to a significantly improved distinction between speech and noise.

Operation & connectivity

Almost every one of us owns a smartphone, so it's natural to wonder if it can be connected to the new hearing aid. Let's take a look at connectivity and usability with the Own 4 IIC. First, we're interested in whether there is a button on the device. Unfortunately, with the IIC, we will be disappointed; there is no immediate adjustment option. Remote controls for hearing aids are actually common today, but Oticon has not provided one for this device.

For some time now, there has been a trend to adjust hearing aids louder or quieter using voice commands. The idea is really good, but Oticon is not there yet with this device. Don't worry about it; this feature would be nice, but it's optional. In addition to buttons or remote controls, some hearing aids also have a tap control. That means you can simply tap your ear, and the device will switch. However, we do not have that here at Oticon, as it would have required specific sensors.

Quickly turning up the volume via the app is unfortunately not possible with the Own 4 IIC. There is no app available for that. However, this is irrelevant if you are not a smartphone user anyway. If you were looking forward to wireless streaming, we unfortunately have to disappoint you, as a wireless module has not been integrated here.

Rating Operation & connectivity: 3,8

Simplicity & security

How do you manage with the hearing aid in everyday life? This is the next aspect we need to evaluate. Because only if such a device works simply and effortlessly can you become accustomed to it. When it comes to simplicity in hearing, we make no compromises. We expect the hearing aid to work fully automatically in the background and not require us to constantly press any buttons. With the Own 4 IIC, we are somewhat disappointed. Only the basic situations are recognized automatically. This means that we cannot really manage without manual control options. Some people find it difficult to get used to it, but this hearing aid makes it easy for us to adjust to the new volume. There is a familiarization manager that gradually introduces us to the required target amplification. The period can range from a few weeks to several months, and it can be individually adjusted. The individual steps are so small that you hardly notice there has been an increase in volume.

The Own 4 IIC is not rechargeable; it operates with hearing aid batteries. Unlike rechargeable batteries, it does not need to be charged daily, but the size 10 battery needs to be replaced after a few days.

With its IP 68 certification, the hearing aid can withstand various adverse influences. Dust cannot penetrate, it can endure longer submersion in water, and it is also protected against touch.

Rating Simplicity & security: 2,8

Extras

Everyone appreciates a few extra features, so let's see if we can find something here: We noticed the tinnitus option. Anyone who wants can set up a special tinnitus program. This gently masks the annoying tinnitus with soft background noise, helping to distract from it. The sounds can be customized to personal hearing preferences.

In these mobile times, a remote maintenance service through an app would be very helpful. This would allow one to easily create a new hearing aid program from home. Unfortunately, this service is not available for the Own 4 IIC. Therefore, for any changes, one still has to visit the specialist shop.

Many hearing aids today still come with a few health features. However, since the Own 4 IIC does not have any special sensors for that, we cannot present any specifics here. We were particularly impressed with the additional features contained in the Own 4 IIC. Various assistants support your daily life beyond hearing and can be configured in the app. These are the kinds of hearing aids you don't want to give up. By the way: These lifestyle features are often still being worked on, so they may change with updates.
