The Oticon Own 5 ITC in review
Here we look at a hearing aid from the lower middle class that is worn in the ear. It is called Own 5 ITC and comes from the manufacturer Oticon. It can be used by all people with almost any hearing needs who desire a discreet hearing aid. Due to its quite comfortable position at the front of the ear canal, it has very good sound characteristics.
Hearing comfort
What is most bothersome to hearing aid users: Exactly, background noise. That’s why we first look at the comfort features of the test device. The Own 5 ITC offers only the absolute essentials when it comes to hearing comfort. A normal noise suppression system is definitely present. It is supposed to dampen constant sounds like street noise or the hum of the air conditioning. In our test device from Oticon, there is only a minimal basic reduction. Users should have a certain tolerance for noise here.
A so-called "bang filter" would have been nice; it would have made the clattering while unloading the dishwasher somewhat more bearable. But we have to do without that in the Own 5 ITC. We found a basic wind detection, but unfortunately, there is nothing adjustable. We always look closely at the number of equalizer bands. They are important for adjusting the sound of a hearing aid as accurately as possible to the hearing curve. Moreover, speech noise management also takes place within these bands. The Own 5 ITC has 12 of them. That’s okay. Spatial orientation, localizing sounds or speakers is rather difficult with this hearing aid. There are no supportive functions with the microphones. We can hardly award any points for that, and we recommend considering this aspect. After all, spatial hearing is also essential for navigating in public spaces and in traffic.
By the way, you might find that with this Oticon device the sound is perceived as clearer and more natural, especially in noisy environments. This is probably due to the implemented artificial intelligence. The hearing aid has already been trained with millions of real sounds, leading to a significantly improved distinction between speech and noise.

Oticon Own 5 ITC:
Operation & connectivity
How can you make the most of the potential of hearing aids in everyday life? We discovered what access options are available with the Own 5 ITC. First, we found a button directly on the hearing aid. This is very practical because it's the simplest and fastest way to make a change. The volume can be adjusted through it, and different hearing programs can also be activated. If you prefer not to adjust anything directly at the ear, you can of course deactivate the button. We do like the small remote controls, and we've found one for this model. This allows for discreet small adjustments to the volume or sound.
Voice commands are a relatively new way to operate hearing aids. However, in this model, we don't have that option yet. That's not a big deal - as long as you can hear well. Besides buttons or remote controls, some hearing aids also have a tap control. This means you can simply tap your ear briefly, and then the device switches. However, we don't have that feature here at Oticon, as it would require specific sensors.
In the App Store, we also find a suitable application from Oticon. The app for the Own 5 ITC may not be one of our highlights, but it has everything you need for your hearing systems. Problems with making phone calls using a smartphone are a thing of the past with this device. Phone calls, music, and other sounds are completely wirelessly transmitted to the hearing aids. Headphones become unnecessary. We tested the wireless transmission during longer phone calls and while listening to music while exercising. Everything worked simply and smoothly. All that's needed is a compatible smartphone with 2.4 GHz wireless technology.

Simplicity & security
Now let's take a look at how usage is in everyday life. Is handling easy? Do I get a safe device? The first points in the chapter on simplicity are missed by the Own 5 ITC, as it does not have automatic volume adjustment. We have to adjust it ourselves until we get along in the respective hearing situation. A big plus point is given for the automatic acclimatization assistant. It raises the starting volume in very small steps until my hearing goal is reached. This significantly facilitates getting used to the new sound.
The Own 5 ITC is not rechargeable. It continues to get its energy from disposable batteries of size 312, which need to be replaced every few days.
With an IP 68 certification, the hearing aid can withstand a variety of adverse conditions. Dust cannot penetrate, it can withstand longer submersion in water, and it is also protected against contact.

Extras
Before we come to the end, let's take a look at the extras: A special tinnitus program can be programmed on request in the Own 5 ITC. This allows stimulating, pleasant sounds to be generated that distract from the tinnitus when it is particularly strong. We find this very useful and gladly award extra points.
A clever tool is the integrated remote maintenance service. Almost everyone has a smartphone, and time is a scarce resource. Therefore, such a remote maintenance service is absolutely appropriate. Anyone needing a new programming for their hearing aids can easily contact the acoustician via the app and describe their hearing preferences. Through a cloud service, the professional can then send a customized setting as a data package to the app. From there, it is loaded onto the hearing aid and can be tried out immediately. This definitely deserves extra points in our test.
There are no sensors in this Own 5 variant, so the popular health tracking cannot be offered. This feature counts things like steps throughout the day. As mentioned, this hearing aid does not have this function on board. Digital algorithms and suitable apps increasingly allow the integration of lifestyle functions that support your daily life. We are impressed by what hearing aids like this one from Oticon can do today. Be sure to give it a try!
