We have a discreet hearing aid from an affordable price range that is worn in the ear. The direct placement in the ear canal lays the foundation for good hearing success, as sound has only a very short distance to travel to the eardrum. As a result, all sounds actually arrive where we want them to.
The Own 5 ITE HS provides sufficient amplification for nearly every hearing need.
Hearing comfort
First, we looked at the comfort features. The better these are, the easier and more pleasant the hearing experience becomes. In this hearing aid, we find only the absolute essentials regarding hearing comfort. The traditional noise suppression ensures that uniform, unimportant noises are slightly reduced. The Own 5 ITE HS has the standard noise suppression integrated by the manufacturer. It is active in the background but cannot be adjusted further. There is a basic wind noise reduction. This is quite useful outside, but it is not sufficient for stronger autumn winds.
A so-called noise filter would have been nice, as it would have made the clattering when unloading the dishwasher a bit more bearable. But we have to do without that in the Own 5 ITE HS. There is no support for spatial hearing, which the Own 5 ITE HS cannot excel at. With 12 frequency bands, one can achieve a pretty good sound. An avid musician may not be completely satisfied with that, but for normal hearing and sound requirements, this number is completely sufficient.
Interestingly, artificial intelligence also plays a role in the signal processing here. The sound is not only analyzed based on typical frequency patterns. Particularly intense, noisy situations are perceived as more realistic and pleasant.

Operation & connectivity
Most hearing aids automatically adapt to their surroundings. However, it can sometimes be very convenient to make some changes yourself. After all, the hearing aid doesn't know how you are feeling at the moment. We looked at what operating options the Own 5 ITE HS offers: The simplest operating option is always a button directly on the hearing aid. This one has it as well. It can be programmed according to your preferences. Do you want a manual volume control? No problem, the button allows for stepwise adjustment of the volume. Or do you need different special programs for your professional daily life or hobbies? These can also be activated via the button. If you prefer to leave everything in automatic mode, you can simply ignore the button or even have it deactivated. We do like small remote controls, and for this model, we found one. This allows you to discreetly make slight changes to the volume or sound.
We always appreciate when a hearing aid surprises us with a great additional function. For example, we would have liked to see voice control at this point. However, this feature is currently not available in the Own 5 ITE HS. Another option for controlling the hearing aids is tapping control. You simply tap your fingers on your ear, which triggers a specific function. But this possibility is not available in this Oticon device.
The app is definitely very useful. Anyone with a smartphone should download it. Although the app isn't one of our favorites, it is a handy addition to the Own 5 ITE HS. The Own 5 comes with a 2.4 GHz antenna and allows us the pleasure of binaural phone calls. This even gives us an advantage over normal hearing individuals. We find this good and are happy to award points.

Simplicity & security
Die Nutzerfreundlichkeit ist der nächste Aspekt, dem wir uns widmen wollen. Hier geht es um Alltagstauglichkeit und die Frage, wie einfach und sicher man mit dem Hörgerät durchs Leben kommt. Eine automatische Umgebungsanpassung wäre sicher hilfreich im Alltag, ist im Own 5 ITE HS aber leider nicht vorgesehen. Deshalb müssen wir uns auf die manuellen Regelmöglichkeiten beschränken. Über den integrierten Eingewöhnungsmanager freuen wir uns sehr. Er hebt im Hintergrund die Lautstärke des Hörgerätes in winzig kleinen Schritten an, bis unsere Zielverstärkung irgendwann erreicht ist. Wir können uns entspannt und ganz allmählich an die neuen Höreindrücke gewöhnen.
Das Own 5 ITE HS ist nicht aufladbar, es wird mit Hörgeräte-Batterien betrieben. Im Gegensatz zum Akku muss nicht täglich geladen werden, dafür wird nach einigen Tagen die Batterie der Größe 312 gewechselt.
Das Own 5 ist nahezu staub- und wasserdicht und mit seiner IP 68-Klassifizierung sicherlich bestens geschützt gegen äußere Einflüsse.

Extras
Zum Schluss schauen wir kurz, ob es noch irgendwelche Extras gibt: Auf jeden Fall erwähnenswert ist das Tinnitusprogramm. Davon werden all jene profitieren, die von lästigen Ohrgeräuschen geplagt werden. Angenehme, leise Geräusche werden so eingestellt, dass sie den Tinnitus sanft umspielen. Am Ende versinkt der Tinnitus in der Geräuschkulisse und fällt gar nicht mehr störend auf.
Ein cleveres Tool ist der integrierte Fernwartungsservice. Fast jeder hat ein Smartphone, und Zeit ist ein knappes Gut. Deshalb ist so ein Fernwartungsservice absolut angemessen. Wer eine neue Programmierung seiner Hörgeräte benötigt, kann ganz einfach über die App Kontakt zum Akustiker aufnehmen und seine Hörwünsche beschreiben. Über einen Cloud-Service kann der Profi dann eine individuelle Einstellung als Datenpaket in die App schicken. Von dort wird sie aufs Hörgerät geladen und kann sofort ausprobiert werden. Das verdient auf jeden Fall Extrapunkte in unserem Test.
Viele Hörgeräte haben heute noch ein paar Gesundheits-Funktionen dabei. Da das Own 5 ITE HS aber keine speziellen Sensoren dafür hat, können wir hier keine Besonderheiten vorstellen. Mit Geräten wie diesem aus dem Hause Oticon werden unsere Testberichte immer länger, denn nun gibt es auch noch intelligente Zusatzfunktionen. Verschiedene Assistenten erleichtern Ihnen das Leben und werden in der App personalisiert. Zwingend nötig ist das nicht, macht aber riesig Spaß. Dafür gibt es eine gute Bewertung von uns.
