Hearing aids are not just meant to bring speech to the ear, but also to sound pleasant. So let's first look at the comfort features. What types of noise does the hearing aid recognize? Are they dampened or transmitted unchanged? Is the hearing aid suitable for a lively everyday life? Here with this test device, we were impressed by the excellent sound management. Like in every hearing aid, it also has the typical noise cancellation. It is designed to reduce consistent, noisy background sounds to the point where they no longer dominate. The Own 2 IIC allows the noise reduction to be adjusted to the customer's wishes.
With this model, there is no need for wind noise management. The hearing aid fits so far into the ear canal that wind noise doesn't become a problem at all. Impulsive sounds are also detected by this device and tolerably reduced. A brilliant listening experience is largely based on the number of frequency bands. The more bands there are, the narrower the individual frequency channels are, the better the hearing aid can be adapted to individual preferences. Here we have as many as 20 bands. This not only allows for a fantastic sound impression, but also enables speech and noise cancellation to work very carefully. The Own 2 IIC impresses us with its natural, spatial hearing. The outer ear maintains its function, creating a 3D feeling as if one were not wearing a hearing aid at all.
An important component in the signal processing of the Own 2 IIC is artificial intelligence. The influence is positive, as many customers find conversations in noisy situations to be significantly more relaxed.

Operation & connectivity
Every person has their own unique hearing needs. It is advantageous to be able to customize one's hearing aids beyond the automatic functions. In the test, we discovered the following access options: we searched in vain for a button as a quick access option. It is likely a victim of the small form factor. One can live with that since the hearing aid makes most settings automatically anyway. Is the Own 2 remotely controllable? Unfortunately not, there is no suitable device available.
Voice commands are a relatively new way of operating hearing aids. However, we do not have this option in this model yet. This is not a significant issue – the main thing is that one can hear well. Some hearing aids can also be operated with a quick tap of a finger without needing to press a button. However, this feature has not been implemented here yet.
An additional app for individual operation would be nice, but it is currently not offered for this hearing aid. A wireless connection to a smartphone or laptop is not possible due to the lack of the necessary hardware components. One should think carefully about whether they can do without this feature, but do try it out.

Simplicity & security
Another point in our checklist is handling. Does everything work easily and reliably? What does the hearing aid offer to ensure safe use in everyday life? The situational recognition didn’t impress us much. Quiet and loud environments are identified, and the Own 2 IIC adjusts accordingly. But as soon as the acoustic conditions become more challenging and various noise sources appear simultaneously, one might need to make some adjustments to the hearing aid themselves. A great bonus with this hearing aid is the automatic acclimatization. Especially if one has been hearing poorly for a long time and is using a hearing aid for the first time, this is a tremendous relief. The volume doesn’t have to be immediately cranked up to the maximum. One can start at a lower level, and gradually and almost imperceptibly, the amplification approaches the target.
The Own 2 IIC gets its energy from small disposable batteries that need to be changed every few days. While that’s not rocket science, it should be considered especially for those with motor issues. A rechargeable battery would be much easier to handle.
The hearing aid has been rated at IP protection class 68. This guarantees comprehensive protection against dust ingress. Water also cannot easily harm the hearing aid. Therefore, it is well-equipped for outdoor activities where it can get wet and dirty. However, you should still not necessarily bathe or swim with the hearing aids. Bath additives or the salt content in seawater can change the composition and may ultimately cause damage.

Extras
Finally, we want to know if the hearing aid perhaps offers any specials: We really liked the optional tinnitus program. There are quite a few people who are occasionally or frequently plagued by a ringing or hissing in their ears. The tinnitus program in the Own 2 IIC is essentially nothing more than a sound generator. It’s about producing broadband noises or sounds that gently and pleasantly stimulate all hearing ranges. The tinnitus gets drowned out and is no longer perceived as bothersome.
In mobile times like these, a remote maintenance service via an app would be very helpful. This would allow one to comfortably create a new hearing aid programming from home. Unfortunately, this service is not available for the Own 2 IIC. Therefore, for any modification requests, one still has to visit the specialist store.
Many hearing aids today still come with a few health functions. However, since the Own 2 IIC does not have any special sensors for this, we cannot present any particular features. You should take a closer look at the app for this Oticon device. There are some extras in it that significantly expand the functionality of these hearing aids. We really think these additional functions are great!
