The Oticon Own SI 2 IIC in review
We are once again in the test lab, and this time we had a product from Oticon in our hands, or rather on our ear. The full product name is Own SI 2 IIC, and it is classified among the top-tier devices. Due to its perfect, very deep placement in the ear canal, it has good acoustic properties. The Own SI 2 IIC is worn in the ear, and it is a very delicate miniature hearing aid for light, moderate, and more severe hearing needs.
Hearing comfort
In the first chapter, we assess the quality of noise management. We call it listening comfort, as these features determine how pleasant the sound experience is for the hearing aid wearer. However, noises can be of various types and require different tools for suppression. The manufacturer provides the customer with comprehensive noise management in the Own SI 2 IIC. First, we look at noise suppression. Its purpose is to tame everyday sounds such as ventilation or refrigerator noise. This Oticon model includes a significant and well-functioning noise reduction.
We are pleased to find effective impulse sound damping here. It is definitely useful in everyday life, as it noticeably absorbs the sound of door slamming, dishes clattering, or similarly rattling noises. Wind noise is another specialty topic. Anyone who has been outside with older hearing aids knows what we are talking about. However, with the Own SI 2 IIC, this is not an issue due to its design. The wind does not really reach the microphones because they are located in the ear canal. With 20 channels, the frequency band count in the Own SI 2 IIC is very high. This allows the hearing aid to be perfectly adjusted to each ear and offers long-term good tuning options. Hearing aids like the Own SI 2 IIC maintain the natural spatial perception that we have experienced since childhood. The function of the outer ear, head size, head shadow effects - all these parameters create a real, authentic 3D hearing experience.
Artificial intelligence is also employed in the signal processing of the Own SI 2 IIC. This allows for a much more realistic analysis of the listening environment, and especially clarity in noisy surroundings is significantly improved.

Operation & connectivity
Most hearing aids automatically adapt to their environment. However, it is sometimes very practical to be able to make a change yourself. After all, the hearing aid doesn't know how you are feeling at the moment. We looked into what operating options the Own SI 2 IIC has to offer: First, we are interested in whether there is a button on the device. Unfortunately, with the IIC, we are disappointed, as there is no immediate adjustment option. Is the Own SI 2 remotely controllable? Unfortunately not; there is no suitable device available for that.
For some time now, there has been a trend to adjust hearing aids louder or quieter using voice commands. The idea is really good, but Oticon is not there yet with this device. Don't worry about it; this feature would be nice, but it is dispensable. There is no control of the hearing aids with a simple fingertip in this Oticon model, because specific sensors would have been needed in the housing for that.
Quickly adjusting the volume through the app is unfortunately not possible with the Own SI 2 IIC. An app is not available for this. However, this is irrelevant if you are not a smartphone user anyway. There is no connection option to other audio sources provided here. It's a pity because a wireless streaming function would have offered real added value.

Simplicity & security
We continue our test and see how easy this hearing aid is to handle. After all, it should simplify the everyday life of hearing aid users and not complicate it further. The situational automatic of the Own SI 2 IIC includes almost everything one might experience in daily life. It provides me with the perfect setting at any time, without me having to do anything actively. Especially during varying phases, this is extremely convenient and makes me almost forget the hearing aid at my ear. The integrated acclimatization manager can be a great help for you when starting in the world of hearing aids. Its task is to gradually increase the volume of the hearing aid in tiny steps until the target volume is reached. This way, you can relax and gradually get used to the new hearing impressions. The Own SI 2 IIC is not rechargeable. It is powered by size 10 hearing aid batteries. Disadvantage: The batteries are disposed of after use. Advantage: There is no need for daily recharging of batteries; the hearing aid can run continuously for several days on one battery.
The data sheet certifies the Oticon device with an IP protection class 68 certification. This makes it one of the most resistant hearing aids on the market. Dust has no chance, and water does not penetrate the casing unless submerged deeper than 1.5 meters. Nevertheless, be cautious. Shampoo, for example, alters the surface tension of water. You should also avoid saltwater. However, in everyday life, you can behave completely carefree.

Extras
Das Finale gehört den Extras, also kleinen Zusatzfunktionen, die dem Hörgerät noch ein paar Extrapunkte einbringen könnten: Ein Tinnitusprogramm wäre so ein zusätzliches Goodie. Davon könnten viele Menschen profitieren, die unter ihren Ohrgeräuschen leiden. Aber leider hat das Own SI 2 IIC keine Tinnitusoption und vergibt ein paar Punkte im Test.
Online-Dienste werden immer selbstverständlicher. Auch für Hörgeräte gibt es häufig einen Fernwartungsservice. Oticon hat sowas aber für sein Own SI 2 IIC noch nicht vorgesehen. Man muss also jedesmal ins Fachgschäft gehen, wenn man sein Hörgerät anders programmieren lassen möchte. Kein Extrapunkt dafür.
Ein neuer Trend in der Hörgerätebranche sind integrierte Sensoren, mit denen z.B. ein paar persönliche Gesundheitsdaten getrackt werden können. Das hat das Own SI 2 IIC aber nicht im Angebot. Dieses Oticon-Hörgerät hat keine weiteren Lifestyle-Optionen an Bord. Anderswo gibt es Sprachassistenten oder Erinnerungsfunktionen, aber zum guten Hören braucht man das nicht. Es hätte das Produkt nur etwas cooler gemacht.
