The Oticon Own SI 3 CIC in review
This test report is about the Own SI 3 CIC. It was developed by Oticon and covers mild to profound hearing losses. This variant is worn in the ear. Own SI 3 CIC is a small, barely visible hearing aid from the Advanced Class. We achieve clean sound transmission due to the wearing position directly in the ear canal.
Hearing comfort
A good speech understanding is a given in modern hearing aids. Equally important is hearing comfort. Only when the ratio of speech transmission to the level of background noise is right is hearing perceived as pleasant. Therefore, let's take a look at the comfort features: The Own SI 3 CIC offers the customer a comprehensive noise management system. Normal environmental sounds such as street noise, vacuum cleaner noise, or that of a fan should be dampened by a classic noise suppression system. This Oticon hearing aid does quite well in that regard. In a normal listening environment, it certainly works fine.
There is also a so-called impulse noise filter that slightly cushions short and loud noises. This is a useful feature, but we would have liked a bit more depth in the settings. In this model, wind noise management can be omitted. The hearing aid sits so far in the ear canal that wind noises do not become a problem at all. The adjustable microphones help detect specific directions and can also assist in noise cancellation, but the spatial sound was not very natural. With 18 frequency channels, the Own SI 3 CIC clearly belongs to the better devices and allows for individual, good-sounding programming.
An essential component in the signal processing of the Own SI 3 CIC is artificial intelligence. The influence is positive, as many customers find conversations in noisy situations to be noticeably more relaxed.
Rating Hearing comfort: 2,2
Operation & connectivity
Occasionally, one finds themselves in situations where it would be good if the hearing aid were set differently. After all, we live in hectic times where the acoustic environment frequently changes. Most hearing aids have specific options for users to influence the settings themselves. This is how it works with the Own SI 3 CIC: There is a button directly on the hearing aid. With this, you can change the volume or activate additional hearing programs. It can be programmed entirely according to customer preferences. The use of it is, of course, optional. Unfortunately, this hearing aid cannot be adjusted with a remote control – which means a few points are lost.
In the test, we did not find any option for voice control. This feature is not necessarily required, but we would have appreciated it. Tap Control would have also been an interesting feature. With this, you can change the function with a quick tap on the ear. But that is not available on the Own SI 3 CIC yet.
We missed an app for the Own SI 3 CIC during the test. If controlling via smartphone is important to you, you should look for another model. Unfortunately, we have to forgo a streaming function here and continue to hold the smartphone to the ear in the usual way.
Rating Operation & connectivity: 3,5

Simplicity & security
For the next chapter, we put the hearing aid through a small practical test. We wanted to know if it is easy to use and uncomplicated in everyday life. We rate the integrated situation recognition in the Own SI 3 CIC as more of a middle ground. The most important loud and quiet situations are recognized and adapted. However, for acoustically more complex moments, this is not entirely sufficient, as further manual adjustment options are necessary. A great feature of this hearing aid is the automatic acclimatization. Especially when someone has been hearing poorly for a long time and then wears a hearing aid for the first time, this is a tremendous relief. The volume does not have to be immediately maximized. You can start at a lower level, and gradually and almost unnoticed, the amplification approaches the target.
The CIC from Own SI 3 operates with 10 disposable batteries and is not rechargeable. This has its pros and cons. We have provided assistance for the decision of "battery or rechargeable": Rechargeable hearing aids or batteries: 6 criteria for your decision.
The Own SI 3 is nearly dust and water resistant and, with its IP 68 classification, is certainly well protected against external influences.
Rating Simplicity & security: 2,3
Extras
We all like goodies, so let's take a final look at the extras that may be hidden in the hearing aid. Oticon has integrated a sound generator that plays some soothing sounds for those suffering from tinnitus. This can distract from the tinnitus and provide a bit more relaxation.
Online services are becoming increasingly common. There is often a remote maintenance service available for hearing aids as well. However, Oticon has not yet provided this for its Own SI 3 CIC. This means you have to visit the specialist store every time you want to program your hearing aid differently. No extra point for that.
If Oticon had integrated motion sensors into this hearing aid, it could even allow for individual health tracking. However, this is not the case here. These points are lost for the Own SI 3 CIC in the evaluation. The device from Oticon focuses on essential hearing functions and does not offer extras like voice assistants or translation features. While that could have been fun, it is not necessary for a good hearing experience.
Rating Extras: 3,3
