The Oticon Own SI 4 IIC in review

In the jungle of hearing aid variants, we would like to provide you with some orientation and present another test report. Today, it's about an Oticon model, specifically the Own SI 4 IIC. The amplification power is suitable for mild to severe hearing losses, and just through the optimal, very deep placement in the ear canal close to the eardrum, it has a quite decent sound. The Own SI 4 IIC is a truly small hearing aid at a reasonable price from the upper mid-range. It is worn in the ear.

Hearing comfort

In the Hearing Comfort section, we look at how a hearing aid manages all the background noise. Comfortable noise management significantly contributes to a user liking and regularly wearing their hearing aids. With this Oticon device, solid comfort programming by the audiologist is possible. The regular noise suppression aims to reduce uniform, hissing background noises. In the Own SI 4 IIC, a stronger noise reduction would be desirable, but this is reserved for higher-end hearing aids.

Fast, sharp sounds are detected here, but only moderately reduced. This model does not require wind noise management. The hearing aid sits deep enough in the ear canal that wind noise does not become an issue. There is no support for spatial hearing, which is where the Own SI 4 IIC does not perform well. The Own SI 4 IIC has 14 adjustable frequency bands, placing it in the mid-range. A good acoustician can certainly extract a reasonable sound from it.

Interestingly, artificial intelligence also plays a role in signal processing here. The sound is not only analyzed based on typical frequency patterns. Intense, noisy situations are thus perceived as more realistic and pleasant.

Rating Hearing comfort: 3,2

Operation & connectivity

The majority of functions are automatically activated by this Oticon model. However, it can be quite useful to have the option to expand the functionality a bit further. In our test, we found out what options we have here. We couldn’t find a button, which is a pity. Let’s move on. We also did not find a remote control. It's a shame, because we actually quite like this discreet method of operation.

We are always pleased when a hearing aid surprises us with a great additional feature. For example, we would have liked to see voice control at this point. But this is currently not available in the Own SI 4 IIC. Tap Control would also have been an interesting feature. With this, you can change the function with a quick tap on the ear. But that is not present here in the Own SI 4 IIC yet.

Quickly increasing the volume via the app is unfortunately not possible with the Own SI 4 IIC. There is no app available for this. However, this is irrelevant if you are not a smartphone user anyway. There is no option for a connection to other audio sources here. It's a shame, because a wireless streaming function would have offered real added value.

Rating Operation & connectivity: 3,8

Simplicity & security

We continue with the test with a brief assessment of how easy everyday use will be. Is it complicated? Do I need to be particularly careful? Or do I not need to consider anything further? When it comes to simplicity in listening, we do not compromise. We expect the hearing aid to work fully automatically in the background and not require us to constantly press any buttons. With the Own SI 4 IIC, we are a bit disappointed. Only the basic situations are automatically recognized. This means that we cannot really get by without manual operating options. A great feature of this hearing aid is the automatic acclimatization. Especially when someone has been hearing poorly for a long time and then wears a hearing aid for the first time, this is a tremendous relief. The volume does not have to be immediately set to maximum. One can initially start at a lower level, and gradually, almost unnoticed, the amplification approaches the desired level.

We regret that the Own SI 4 IIC does not have a rechargeable battery but operates with hearing aid batteries size 10. This is not particularly problematic, but one should remember to carry spare batteries. On the other hand, this hearing aid does not have to be charged daily; it runs for a longer period on one battery.

We also take a look at the robustness of the housing and discover the protection class IP 68 in the datasheet. This means that dust cannot penetrate at all, and even water only becomes hazardous after prolonged submersion. Protection against contact is also included.

Rating Simplicity & security: 2,8

Extras

We complete the test by checking if there are any extras for you: We would have liked to discover a tinnitus program at this point, but unfortunately, there isn't one.

What about remote maintenance? Such online services save you a visit to the specialist store because you can directly contact an acoustics professional through the app. Unfortunately, we couldn't find anything like that for the Own SI 4 IIC. Too bad, it would have been a great additional tool.

Many hearing aids today still come with a few health functions. However, since the Own SI 4 IIC doesn't have any specific sensors for that, we can't present any particular features here. The functionality of the Own SI 4 IIC is limited to normal hearing, which is completely fine. Additional functions like fall alerts or Siri integrations provide considerable added value, but they are not relevant for good hearing balance.

Rating Extras: 4,0
