Oticon offers the Ruby 1 mini Ex, a small mini hearing aid that is worn behind the ear. It is a hearing aid from an affordable price segment and is suitable for mild, moderate, and stronger hearing needs. By directing the speaker directly into the ear canal, it ensures that sound reaches the eardrum without loss.
Hearing comfort
In the Hearing Comfort section, we look at how a hearing aid handles all the background noise. Comfortable noise management significantly contributes to a user liking and regularly wearing their hearing aids. With this Oticon device, we found only a few options for comfort adjustment. The regular noise suppression is designed to mitigate uniform, hissing background noises. In the Ruby 1 mini Ex, we had hoped for a bit more adjustment depth, but – well.
Short, loud sounds can also be detected by this device. However, the attenuation is very low. Those who frequently encounter such impulsive noises in their environment should choose a different model. Wind noise can sometimes become a problem outside. Therefore, a moderate wind noise management is integrated here. The device detects whether the microphones should transmit everything or adjust their direction forward. This can help in conversation situations, but it does not replace true spatial hearing. The number of equalizer bands is very important for adjusting to hearing needs. The mini Ex provides only 10, limiting long-term fine-tuning options.
Other hearing aids are already using artificial intelligence in their signal processing, but this strategy is not yet present in the Ruby 1 mini Ex.

Operation & connectivity
The operation options of hearing aids today are as simple or as complex as anyone would like. The basic functions, of course, operate fully automatically. We wanted to know how users can further access the Ruby 1 mini Ex. There is a button directly on the hearing aid. With it, one can adjust the volume or activate additional hearing programs. It can be programmed according to customer preferences. The use is, of course, optional. We do like small remote controls, and for this model, we have found one. This allows for discreet adjustments to the volume or sound.
The modern form of operation via voice command is not yet found in the Ruby 1 mini Ex. If there are sensors in the hearing aid, a tap control could be possible, which would involve triggering a specific function by tapping the ear with one’s fingers. However, this option is not available in the Ruby 1 mini Ex.
An app on the smartphone is supposed to facilitate operation, and we have found one for the Ruby 1 mini Ex as well. In addition to basic functions like volume and programs, we find a few more buttons for personalization. A streaming option would not be bad for our digital everyday life. The current device meets our desire and includes a 2.4 GHz radio module. This allows phone calls and sounds to be sent directly from the smartphone to the hearing aids.

Simplicity & security
Another point on our checklist is handling. Does everything work easily and reliably? What does the hearing aid offer to ensure safe use in everyday life? We expected a bit more support in daily hearing with the automatic situation detection. While the situations "Quiet" and "Noise" are recognized, the sound environment is usually a bit more complex. We are very pleased with the integrated acclimatization manager. It gradually increases the volume of the hearing aid in tiny steps until our target amplification is eventually reached. We can relax and gradually get used to the new auditory impressions.
The Ruby 1 mini Ex is not rechargeable. It operates with hearing aid batteries size 312. Disadvantage: The batteries are disposed of after use. Advantage: Daily charging of batteries is not necessary, the hearing aid can run continuously for several days on a single battery.
The Ruby 1 is nearly dustproof and waterproof, and with its IP 68 classification, it is certainly well protected against external influences.

Lastly, we are interested in whether there are a few extras on top: Oticon has integrated a sound generator that plays some soothing sounds for those suffering from tinnitus. This can distract from tinnitus and provide a bit more relaxation.
A real added value is the remote maintenance service. For a change in hearing aid settings, you no longer have to go to the specialist store but can directly contact the audiologist via the app. Through a cloud service, you can then load the new data package into the hearing aids. This is exactly what we expect from a modern hearing aid.
If Oticon had integrated motion sensors into this hearing aid, individual health tracking could even be possible. However, this is not the case here. These points are lost in the rating for the Ruby 1 mini Ex. You should take a closer look at the app of this Oticon device. There are indeed some extras in there that significantly expand the functionality of these hearing aids. We really think these additional features are great!
