This test report is about the Ruby 1 mini Ex T. It was developed by Oticon and covers mild, moderate, and even severe hearing losses. This variant is worn behind the ear. Ruby 1 mini Ex T is a compact, small hearing aid from the budget segment. We achieve clear sound transmission through the deep placement of the speaker in the ear canal.

Hearing comfort

The comfort features determine how pleasant hearing is perceived in everyday life. In this hearing aid, we found only a few options for influencing comfort. A classic noise suppression should reduce annoying background noises to a tolerable level. In the Ruby 1 mini Ex T, a stronger noise reduction would be desirable, but that is reserved for higher-end hearing aids. We are happy that the Ruby 1 mini Ex T includes wind reduction.

The impulse sound management is not really recommended in this device. Short, loud noises still sound quite harsh. The hearing aid automatically decides whether the microphones should be directed towards a speaker or not. You get a decent spatial impression, but accurately pinpointing directions or estimating distances through hearing is not so easy. With 10 frequency bands, we are not entirely satisfied with the mini Ex T, but it should be sufficient for uncomplicated hearing curves. The sound is probably not completely natural with this setup.

Sometimes we encounter hearing aids that successfully process data using artificial intelligence, but this device does not do that yet.

Almost every one of us owns a smartphone, so the question arises whether it can be connected to the new hearing aid as well. Let’s take a look at the connectivity and usability of the Ruby 1 mini Ex T. Usually, there is a button on the hearing aid, and we found one on the Ruby 1 as well. It can be configured as a volume control or program selection button and can also be disabled if desired. A remote control is available for the Ruby 1 mini Ex T. It is quite handy, fits in your pocket, and offers a volume control option as well as various hearing programs.

We don't yet find the modern form of operation by voice command in the Ruby 1 mini Ex T. Tap Control would have also been an interesting feature. With that, you could change the function with a quick tap on the ear. But that is not available here in the Ruby 1 mini Ex T yet.

In the App Store, we also find a suitable application from Oticon. The app for the Ruby 1 mini Ex T is not one of our highlights, but it has everything needed for its hearing systems. For our digital daily life, a streaming option wouldn’t be bad. The device in question meets our wish and comes with a 2.4 GHz wireless module. This allows you to send calls and sounds directly from the smartphone to the hearing aids.

Simplicity & security

How does one cope with the hearing aid in everyday life? This is the next aspect we need to evaluate. Because only when such a device works simply and uncomplicated can one get used to it. With the automatic situation recognition, we expected a bit more support in everyday hearing. The situations "Quiet" and "Noise" are recognized, but usually the sound environment is somewhat more complex. We give a big plus point for the automatic acclimatization assistant. It raises the starting volume in very small steps until my hearing goal is achieved. This significantly eases the adjustment to the new sound.

The Ruby 1 mini Ex T is not rechargeable. It operates with hearing aid batteries size 312. Disadvantage: The batteries are disposed of after use. Advantage: The daily charging of batteries is eliminated, and the hearing aid runs continuously for several days on one battery.

The Ruby 1 is almost dustproof and waterproof and, with its IP 68 classification, is certainly well protected against external influences.

Everyone appreciates a few extra features, so let's see if we can find something here: We noticed the tinnitus option. If you like, you can have a special tinnitus program set up. It applies a gentle background noise to help distract from the annoying tinnitus if needed. The sounds can be customized according to personal hearing preferences.

We really like the remote adjustment feature. It's very useful whenever you want to make just a small change to the hearing aid settings but don’t want to drive to the audiologist. Instead, you contact them via the app, and the hearing professional sends back an adjusted data package in the same way.

Tracking health data is a real added value in modern hearing aids. However, this Oticon model lacks the sensors for this service. Digital algorithms and suitable apps increasingly allow for the integration of lifestyle functions that support your daily life. We are impressed by what hearing aids like this from Oticon can do today. Be sure to try this out!
