This test report is about the Ruby 2 mini Ex. It was developed by Oticon and addresses mild, moderate, and severe hearing losses. This version is worn behind the ear. The Ruby 2 mini Ex is a delicate, small hearing aid in an affordable price range. We achieve clean sound transmission through the direct positioning of the speaker in the ear canal.

Hearing comfort

The comfort features determine how pleasant listening is perceived in daily life. In this hearing aid, we find only the absolutely necessary when it comes to hearing comfort. A classic noise suppression should reduce annoying background noises to a manageable level. In the Ruby 2 mini Ex, a stronger noise reduction would be desirable, but that is reserved for higher-end hearing aids. We found a basic wind detection feature, but unfortunately, there are no adjustable settings.

A filter for clattering and banging noises is not present here – unfortunately, that's a point missing. The microphone technology is kept quite simple. The hearing aids cannot create a true sense of space, as normal-hearing individuals experience. If one wants to estimate directions or distances through hearing, one must be careful; this succeeds - if at all - reliably only after a certain period of acclimatization. The number of equalizer bands is very important for adapting to hearing needs. The mini Ex provides us with only 8, which does not allow for many fine-tuning options in the long run.

The signal processing is based, among other things, on typical frequency patterns of speech and noise, but artificial intelligence is not yet in use here.

Operation & connectivity

How can one fully utilize the potential of hearing aids in everyday life? We have discovered what access options are available with the Ruby 2 mini Ex. For those who want to quickly and easily adjust the volume, there is a button on the device. You can also select additional programs for special hearing situations through it. We do like the small remote controls, and for this model, we have found one. This allows for discreet small adjustments to the volume or sound.

The modern form of control via voice command is not yet available in the Ruby 2 mini Ex. Another option to control the hearing aids is a tapping control. You simply tap your fingers on your ear, which triggers a specific function. However, this option is not available in this Oticon device.

It is very comfortable to adjust the hearing aids via the app. There is also a free app for the Ruby 2 mini Ex. In our opinion, the range of functions is mediocre, but mostly sufficient. It's best to try it out in demo mode first. For our digital everyday life, a streaming option would not be bad. The current device meets our wish and includes a 2.4 GHz radio module. This allows you to send phone calls and sounds directly from your smartphone to the hearing aids.

Now let's take a look at how the use in everyday life is structured. Is the handling easy? Do I receive a safe device? We expected a bit more support in everyday hearing for the automatic situational recognition. The situations "Silence" and "Noise" are recognized, but most of the time the noise environment is somewhat more complex. We are very pleased with the integrated acclimatization manager. It gradually increases the volume of the hearing device in tiny steps until our target amplification is eventually reached. We can relax and gradually acclimate to the new hearing impressions.

The Ruby 2 mini Ex is not rechargeable. It continues to get its energy from disposable batteries size 312, which need to be replaced every few days.

The Ruby 2 is almost dust and waterproof and, with its IP 68 classification, is certainly well protected against external influences.

Abschließend wollen wir wissen, ob das Hörgerät vielleicht noch Specials anbietet: Hier ist uns die Tinnitus-Option aufgefallen. Wer mag, kann sich ein spezielles Tinnitus-Programm einrichten lassen. Das legt bei Bedarf ein sanftes Rauschen auf die Ohren, um vom nervigen Tinnitus ein wenig abzulenken. Die Geräusche können nach dem persönlichen Hörgeschmack gestaltet werden.

Spannend finden wir den Fernwartungsdienst, den man in Anspruch nehmen kann. Wenn man keine Gelegenheit hat, zum Hörakustiker zu fahren, kontaktiert man ihn stattdessen über die App, beschreibt kurz sein Hörproblem und erhält anschließend ein Datenpaket mit einer neuen Hörgerätkonfiguration. Wenn die sich gut anhört, lädt man sie in seine Hörgeräte.  

Das Tracken von Gesundheitsdaten ist ein echter Mehrwert in modernen Hörgeräten. Für diesen Dienst fehlen diesem Oticon-Modell allerdings die Sensoren.  Mit Geräten wie diesem aus dem Hause Oticon werden unsere Testberichte immer länger, denn nun gibt es auch noch intelligente Zusatzfunktionen. Verschiedene Assistenten erleichtern Ihnen das Leben und werden in der App personalisiert. Zwingend nötig ist das nicht, macht aber riesig Spaß. Dafür gibt es eine gute Bewertung von uns.

Im Gesamtergebnis landet dieses Testgerät auf den hinteren Plätzen und lässt einige Ausstattungsmerkmale vermissen. Wir vergeben die Note 4,45. Für anspruchsarme Hörer ist das in Ordnung, für einen sehr aktiven Lebensstil empfehlen wir allerdings ein Hörgerät mit umfangreicheren Komfortmerkmalen.
