The Oticon Ruby 2 mini Ex T in review

Inzwischen hat der Hersteller eine bessere Hörtechnik entwickelt: Oticon More Wir haben deshalb die Gesamtnote mit einem Abschlag versehen.

Could this hearing aid from the Oticon program be the right one for you? In our test report on the Ruby 2 mini Ex T, we have highlighted the most important aspects. Here we have a small, barely visible hearing aid from the affordable segment that is worn behind the ear. The comfortable position of the loudspeaker in the ear canal lays the foundation for good hearing success, as the sound has only a very short distance to travel to the eardrum. As a result, all sounds reach the place we want them to.

The Ruby 2 mini Ex T provides sufficient amplification for both mild and moderate hearing needs.

Hearing comfort

What is most bothersome for hearing aid users: Exactly, background noise. That's why we'll first look at the comfort features of the test device. In the Ruby 2 mini Ex T, we find only the absolute essentials regarding hearing comfort. A normal noise suppression is definitely present. It is supposed to dampen constant noises like street noise or the hum of an air conditioner. In our test device from Oticon, we find a rather below-average noise suppression. Noise-sensitive people will have to make some compromises when it comes to hearing comfort.

A filter for clattering, popping noises is not present here – unfortunately, this is a downside. The device from Oticon can also recognize wind noise, but the noise reduction that follows is minimal. It is sufficient for normal daily activities, but true outdoor enthusiasts will not be satisfied with this. We also take a look at the number of equalizer bands: The device from Oticon has 8. We are not really happy with this, as the options for sound design are quite limited. However, it is sufficient for good speech understanding. The microphone technology is kept quite simple. The hearing aids cannot create a real spatial perception, as normal hearing individuals experience. If one wants to assess directions or distances through hearing, one must be careful; this will - if at all - only succeed reliably after a certain adaptation period.

Other hearing aids already use artificial intelligence in their signal processing, but the Ruby 2 mini Ex T does not yet incorporate this strategy.

Operation & connectivity

"Can I adjust something on my hearing aid myself?" "Is there maybe an app?" These and similar questions are becoming increasingly important when choosing a hearing aid, which is why let's take a look at the operating and connectivity options. For those who want to quickly and easily adjust the volume, there is a button on the device. You can also select additional programs for specific listening situations through it. A remote control is available for the Ruby 2 mini Ex T. It is quite practical, fits in your pocket, and offers a volume control as well as different hearing programs.

For some time now, there has been a trend to adjust hearing aids louder or quieter using voice commands. The idea is really good, but Oticon has not yet implemented this feature in this device. Don't worry, this feature would be nice, but it is not essential. Some hearing aids can also be controlled with a quick tap of the finger, without having to press a button. However, this feature has not yet been implemented here.

It is very convenient to adjust the hearing aids via the app. There is also a free app for the Ruby 2 mini Ex T. In our opinion, the functionality is mediocre, but usually sufficient. It’s best to try it out in demo mode beforehand. For our digital everyday life, a streaming option would be nice. The present device meets our wish and comes with a 2.4 GHz radio module. This allows you to send phone calls and sounds directly from your smartphone to the hearing aids.

The best alternatives to the Ruby 2 mini Ex T

Our database contains 76 reviews of hearing aids with similar technical features to this one (i.e., Lautsprecher im Gehörgang positioniert in Size "", not rechargable, geeignet für Hörverlust-Grad leicht, mittel & stark). Here are the top 3 (Redaktionsstand 02.10.2025):

Simplicity & security

An important factor for the acceptance of a hearing aid is its practicality for everyday use. This includes automated functions, as well as robustness and user-friendliness. We expected a bit more support in everyday hearing with the automatic situation recognition. While the situations "Quiet" and "Noise" are recognized, the background noise is usually a bit more complex. The adjustment to the new hearing experience is supported by this device with a fully automatic acclimatization manager. It adjusts the amplification in barely noticeable steps until my hearing loss is completely compensated. I don’t have to do anything other than wear my hearing aids regularly.

We regret that the Ruby 2 mini Ex T does not have a rechargeable battery, but is powered by hearing aid batteries size 312. This is not overly problematic, but one should remember to carry spare batteries. On the other hand, this hearing aid does not need to be charged daily; it runs for a longer time on a battery.

With an IP 68 certification, the hearing aid can withstand many adverse influences. Dust cannot penetrate, it can withstand extended submersion in water, and it is also protected against touches.

Rating Simplicity & security: 2,5

Extras

Finally, let's take a quick look to see if there are any extras: We noticed the tinnitus option here. For those who wish, a special tinnitus program can be set up. This gently places a soft noise in the ears, to distract a bit from the annoying tinnitus. The sounds can be tailored to personal listening preferences.

Oticon is keeping up with the times and offers a future-oriented feature with the remote adjustment service. Working people with little time can connect with their audiologist online and have their hearing aids reprogrammed. Those with a longer commute to the specialist store also benefit from this special service.

Tracking health data is a real added value in modern hearing aids. However, this Oticon model lacks the sensors for this service. Then there are a few lifestyle functions that make your hearing aid a smart assistant. You can connect with voice assistants like Siri, or explore what else the app has to offer. While this may not have much to do with actual hearing, it can be extremely useful.

Rating Extras: 1,8

Conclusion: Oticon Ruby 2 mini Ex T

This test device ranks in the lower positions overall and lacks some features. We give it a score of 4.45. For less demanding listeners, this is acceptable, but for a very active lifestyle, we recommend a hearing aid with more extensive comfort features.
