Oticon is launching its Xceed UP 3 HDO 675, a conventional hearing aid in a solid mid-range price category. It is a nice yet quite visible hearing aid for moderate, severe, and changing hearing losses, and it is worn behind the ear.

Hearing comfort

In the hearing comfort section, we look at how a hearing aid deals with all the background noises. Comfortable noise management significantly contributes to a user liking their hearing aids and wearing them regularly. In this Oticon device, we find only the absolute essentials regarding hearing comfort. The regular noise suppression has the task of alleviating uniform, muffled background noises. In the Xceed UP 3 HDO 675, there is only a minimal basic reduction. A certain tolerance for noise should be expected from the hearing aid wearer here.

A so-called impact filter would have been nice, as it would have made the clattering when unloading the dishwasher a bit more bearable. But we have to forgo that in the Xceed UP 3 HDO 675. There is a basic wind noise reduction. Outside, this is quite useful, but it is actually not sufficient for a strong autumn wind. We have to do without spatial hearing in the Xceed UP 3 HDO 675, but at least the microphones can be switched to a focus mode. The number of equalizer bands is very important for adjusting to hearing needs. The HDO 675 only provides 8 and does not allow for many long-term fine-tuning options.

Strategies based on artificial intelligence are not yet implemented in this hearing aid from Oticon.

After all, the hearing aid doesn't know how you are feeling at the moment. We looked at what control options the Xceed UP 3 HDO 675 offers: There is a button directly on the hearing aid. This allows you to change the volume or activate additional hearing programs. It can be programmed according to customer preferences. The use of it is of course optional. The small remote control, which is available as an option, is very practical. For us, it is one of the most comfortable ways to adjust the hearing aid louder or quieter or switch to another hearing program. No one notices it; there's no need to touch your ear.

As is common today, we also find a smartphone app for the Xceed UP 3 HDO 675. This app contains solid basic functions and adds a few extra features on top. The Xceed UP 3 comes with a 2.4 GHz antenna and allows us to enjoy binaural phone calls. This even gives us an advantage over normal hearing individuals. We think that's great and are happy to give it points.

The automatic situation recognition is supposed to make listening easier. However, the Xceed UP 3 HDO 675 struggles with changing or challenging acoustic environments, as it lacks some adaptive algorithms. Additionally, it is advisable to have a few extra hearing programs set up for this device. Some people find it difficult to get used to, but this hearing aid makes it easy for us to adjust to the new volume. There is a acclimatization manager that gradually introduces us to the required target amplification. The period can last a few weeks or even several months, and it can be individually adjusted. The individual steps are so small that you don’t even notice that there was a volume increase.

Many hearing aids today come with a rechargeable battery, but the Xceed UP 3 HDO 675 still operates with disposable batteries. This is somewhat cumbersome in handling and also burdens the environment.

With an IP 68 certification, the hearing aid can withstand a variety of adverse influences. Dust cannot penetrate, it can also withstand prolonged submersion in water, and it is protected against contact.
