Once again, we dedicate ourselves to a hearing aid from the company Oticon. This time it is a conventional behind-the-ear hearing aid named Zircon 1 mini BTE T. It is a small mini hearing aid, and in terms of price, it falls into the lower mid-range category. It can be used for almost any hearing need. Let’s see what the interior has to offer:
Hearing comfort
In the Hearing Comfort section, we examine how a hearing aid handles all the background noise. Comfortable noise management significantly contributes to whether a user likes their hearing aids and wears them regularly. For this Oticon device, a solid comfort programming by the audiologist is possible. The regular noise suppression aims to mitigate uniform, rumbling background noises. In the Zircon 1 mini BTE T, we had hoped for a bit more control depth, but – well.

“Can I make adjustments to my hearing aid myself?” “Is there maybe an app?” These and similar questions are becoming increasingly important when selecting a hearing aid, which is why we will take a look at the control and connection options. There is a button directly on the hearing aid. This can change the volume or activate additional hearing programs. It can be programmed according to customer preferences. The use is of course optional. Very practical is the small remote control that is available as an option. For us, it is one of the most convenient ways to adjust the hearing aid louder or quieter or to switch to another hearing program. No one notices it, and reaching for the ear is unnecessary.
The modern form of operation via voice command is not yet found in the Zircon 1 mini BTE T. There is no control of the hearing aids with a simple tap of the finger in this Oticon model, as it would have required specific sensors in the casing.
An app on the smartphone is supposed to simplify operation, and we have found one for the Zircon 1 mini BTE T as well. In addition to the basic functions like volume and programs, we find a few more buttons for personalization. We had a lot of fun with the direct, wireless streaming. This means that calls from the smartphone are transmitted to the hearing aids without any additional accessories. This turns the hearing aid into the perfect hands-free system or wireless headphones. Listening to music or watching and hearing videos is incredibly comfortable.

Continuing with the test: How does it fare in terms of user-friendliness? Is it easy or complicated to handle the hearing aid? When it comes to simplicity in hearing, we don't compromise. We expect the hearing aid to function fully automatically in the background without constantly having to press any buttons. With the Zircon 1 mini BTE T, we are a bit disappointed. Only the basic situations are recognized automatically. This means that we can't really manage without manual operation options. A great feature of this hearing aid is the automatic acclimatization. Especially when someone has been hearing poorly for a long time and is using a hearing aid for the first time, this is a tremendous relief. The volume doesn't have to be turned up to the maximum right away. You can start at a lower level, and gradually and almost imperceptibly, the amplification approaches the target.
Many hearing aids today have a rechargeable battery, but the Zircon 1 mini BTE T still operates with disposable batteries. This is a bit cumbersome to handle and also burdens the environment.
The Zircon 1 is almost dust and waterproof and, with its IP 68 rating, is certainly well protected against external influences.

Finally, we want to know if the hearing aid perhaps offers any specials: Are you one of those troubled by tinnitus? Then you could use the optional tinnitus program in the Zircon 1 mini BTE T. Soft, gentle sounds are tailored to your hearing and engage all areas of the inner ear. This is nothing more than a distraction technique, and it works surprisingly well. The tinnitus fades into the general noise and is no longer annoying. This is a simple but effective tool and earns extra points from us.
A real added value is the remote maintenance service. You no longer necessarily have to go to the specialist store for a change in hearing aid settings, but can directly contact the audiologist through the app. A cloud service can then upload the new data package to the hearing aids. This is exactly what we expect from a modern hearing aid.
Many hearing aids today still come with a few health functions. However, since the Zircon 1 mini BTE T does not have special sensors for this, we cannot present any particular features here. Digital algorithms and suitable apps increasingly allow the integration of lifestyle functions that support your daily life.
