Once again, we focus on a hearing aid from the company Oticon. This time it is a traditional behind-the-ear hearing aid called Zircon 2 mini BTE T. It is a very small hearing aid, and in terms of price, it falls into a solid mid-range. It can be used for mild, moderate, and even strong hearing needs. Let's take a look at what the inner workings have to offer:
Hearing comfort
The comfort features determine how pleasant listening is perceived in everyday life. In this hearing aid, we find only the absolutely necessary regarding hearing comfort. A classic noise suppression is supposed to reduce annoying background noises to a bearable level. In the Zircon 2 mini BTE T, it works only very limitedly. When looking at the price, that could certainly fit. We found a basic wind detection, but unfortunately, nothing is adjustable.
A pulse sound dampener is unfortunately not included in the Zircon 2 mini BTE T. Spatial hearing would be another important point, but not much can be said about this Oticon hearing aid in that regard. There are no special features that can somehow support or simulate spatial hearing. This is especially worth considering if you are often outside in public spaces. A few more frequency channels would be desirable, but the existing 12 channels work quite well.
An element in the signal processing of the Zircon 2 mini BTE T is artificial intelligence. The impact is positive, as many customers find conversations in noisy situations to be noticeably more relaxed.

Operation & connectivity
The majority of functions are automatically activated by this Oticon model. However, it can be very useful to have the option to expand the functionality a bit. In our tests, we found out what options we have here. For those who want to quickly and easily adjust the volume, there is a button on the device. Additional programs for special hearing situations can also be selected through this. A discreet way to adjust the hearing aid is with the remote control, which fits in any pocket. If the person you are talking to is speaking too softly again, just one or two clicks are enough to adjust the volume. Additional hearing programs for listening to music or driving can also be activated with the remote control.
The modern form of operation via voice command is not yet found in the Zircon 2 mini BTE T. If there are sensors in the hearing aid, tap control could be feasible—triggering a specific function by tapping your fingers to your ear. However, this option is not available in the Zircon 2 mini BTE T.
As is common today, we also find a smartphone app for the Zircon 2 mini BTE T. This app includes solid basic functions and adds a few goodies on top. We really enjoyed the direct, wireless streaming. This means that calls from the smartphone are transmitted to the hearing aids without any additional accessories. This turns the hearing aid into the perfect hands-free system or wireless headphones. Listening to music or watching and listening to videos is incredibly comfortable.

An important factor for the acceptance of a hearing aid is its practicality in everyday life. This includes, for example, automated functions as well as robustness and user-friendliness. When it comes to adapting to changing hearing situations, we must limit ourselves to the manual options with the Zircon 2 mini BTE T. An automatic situation recognition would definitely have made life easier, but it is not available here. Some people have difficulty getting used to it, but this hearing aid makes it easy for us to cope with the new volume. There is a familiarization manager that gradually brings us up to the required target amplification. The period can last a few weeks or several months, and it is individually adjustable. The individual stages are so small that you hardly notice that there has been a volume increase.
The Zircon 2 mini BTE T is not rechargeable; it is powered by hearing aid batteries. Unlike rechargeable batteries, it does not need to be charged daily, but the size 312 battery needs to be replaced after a few days.
We had an unencumbered everyday life during our test thanks to the IP-68 certification. This means that the hearing aid is particularly well protected against dust and water. We marched through the rain and then removed the hearing aids with wet hands - no problem at all. However, the water resistance really only applies to fresh, natural water and not to soapy bathwater or saltwater.

Everyone appreciates a few extra features, so let's see if we can find something here: We noticed the tinnitus option. Anyone who likes can set up a special tinnitus program. If needed, it delivers a gentle background noise to distract from the annoying tinnitus. The sounds can be customized according to personal hearing preferences.
The remote adjustment feature is really great. It is especially helpful when you only want to make a small change to the hearing aid settings but don't want to make a special trip to the audiologist. Instead, you can contact them through the app, and the hearing professional sends back an adjusted data package in the same way.
Some hearing aids can track certain health data. However, this requires special sensors in the hearing aid, which we unfortunately do not have in the Zircon 2 mini BTE T. This Oticon device has a few small highlights. Depending on what your smartphone supports, you can be reminded of appointments, access Siri, or use many other assistance systems. This definitely earns an extra point.
