Philips presents the HearLink 2010 MNR T R, a model from a solid mid-range price category. It can compensate for mild, moderate, and even severe hearing losses. It is a slightly visible hearing aid that delivers good sound through the clever decision to place the speaker directly in the ear canal. It is worn behind the ear.

Hearing comfort

The hearing comfort determines whether someone enjoys wearing their hearing aids or not. That's why we first looked at how the hearing aid handles background noise. In this model presented by Philips, we find only the bare minimum regarding hearing comfort. Of course, a noise suppression feature is integrated, designed to mitigate tiring background noises. In the HearLink 2010 MNR T R, we have to settle for a minimum level of noise suppression. For active outdoor fans, a wind noise management system is always useful. This device does have one, but it's not very effective. It cannot be adjusted individually either.

A filter for rattling, banging noises is not present here – unfortunately, that's a point against it. Natural spatial hearing is lacking in this device, which certainly poses some challenges in everyday life. We can no longer reliably determine directions. Anyone with limited vision should consider choosing a different hearing aid. We also look at the number of equalizer bands: the device from Philips has 8. We are not really happy with that; the options for sound shaping are quite limited. However, it's sufficient for good speech understanding.

Sometimes we encounter hearing aids that successfully process data using artificial intelligence, but that's not the case with this device yet.

Philips: Woman from behind with a hearing device on the ear

Philips HearLink 2010 MNR T R: This hearing aid from Philips is available in different colors. For example, it can be matched to the skin or hair color. At the bottom, there is an easily accessible rocker switch. With a simple flick, you can change the volume, for example.

Operation & connectivity

“Can I adjust something on my hearing aid myself?” “Is there perhaps an app?” These and similar questions are becoming increasingly important when selecting a hearing aid, which is why we will take a look at the control and connectivity options. Usually, there is a button on the hearing aid, and we found one on the HearLink 2010 as well. It can be configured as a volume control or program selection button and can also be disabled if desired. A discreet way to adjust the hearing aid is with the remote control. It fits in any pocket. If the person you are talking to speaks too softly again, just one or two clicks are enough to adjust the volume. Additional hearing programs for listening to music or for driving can also be activated with the remote control.

We are always pleased when a hearing aid surprises us with a great additional feature. For example, we would have liked to see voice control here. However, this feature is currently not available in the HearLink 2010 MNR T R. There is no control of the hearing aids with a simple tap of a finger in this Philips model, as it would have required specific sensors in the housing.

As is common today, we also find a smartphone app for the HearLink 2010 MNR T R. This app includes solid basic functions and adds a few extras on top. One of the best features of the hearing aid is the direct streaming function. This turns the hearing aid into a TrueWireless headset and allows phone calls and other sounds to be received directly in the ear. The prerequisite is a compatible smartphone that includes 2.4 GHz technology. The biggest advantage is that you can hear phone calls not just in one ear, but in both. Additionally, the sound can be tailored to personal preferences.

Simplicity & security

An important factor for the acceptance of a hearing aid is its everyday usability. This includes, for example, automated functions as well as robustness and user-friendliness. The automatic situation recognition is usually intended to make listening easier. However, the HearLink 2010 MNR T R does not handle changing or difficult acoustic environments very well, as it lacks a few adaptive algorithms. Additionally, one should always have a few extra hearing programs set for this device. Some people find it difficult to get used to it, but this hearing aid makes it easier for us to cope with the new volume. There is a fitting manager that gradually introduces us to the required target amplification. The duration can be a few weeks or even several months, and it is individually adjustable. The individual steps are so small that you don’t even notice that there has been a volume increase.

An extremely useful development in recent years is, in our opinion, the integrated battery. We are used to recharging electronic devices in our daily lives. And the HearLink 2010 MNR T R is also rechargeable, so we can do without the annoying battery changes.

The HearLink 2010 is nearly dust- and waterproof and, with its IP 68 rating, is certainly well protected against external influences.

In addition to the affordable desktop charging station, Philips also offers the Charging Station Plus. It features a power bank and a drying function, and also serves as a transport case.

Extras

At the end of our test report, there is still a little space for the extra features: Tinnitus is an issue for many people, but unfortunately, this hearing aid does not have a specific tinnitus sound program. So we cannot award an extra point here. The remote maintenance service offers real added value. For a change in the hearing aid settings, it is no longer necessary to go to the specialized store; instead, you can directly contact the acoustician through the app. Via a cloud service, you can then load the new data package into the hearing aids. This is exactly what we expect from a modern hearing aid. If Philips had integrated motion sensors into this hearing aid, individual health tracking could even be possible. However, this is not the case here. These points are lost for the HearLink 2010 MNR T R in the evaluation. When paired with a smartphone, the HearLink 2010 MNR T R surprises us with a few nice lifestyle features. It is definitely worthwhile to familiarize yourself thoroughly with the app and make use of the offered assistance programs.

Conclusion: Philips HearLink 2010 MNR T R

This test device ranks low in the overall results and lacks some features. We award a grade of 3.93. This is acceptable for casual listeners, but for a very active lifestyle, we recommend a hearing aid with more comprehensive comfort features.
