The Philips HearLink 2030 ITC in review
Are you curious about this hearing aid from Philips? Let's see what we have found out. The HearLink 2030 ITC is designed for mild, moderate, and even severe hearing needs and it is worn in the ear. It is a discreet hearing aid at a rather affordable price.
Due to the sound outlet being close to the eardrum, we have a good, clear sound.
The partnership with the Demant Group, which includes Bernafon and Oticon, has given Philips a kickstart in the hearing aid industry in 2019.
Hearing comfort
Hearing comfort determines whether a person likes to wear their hearing aids or not. That's why we first looked at how the hearing aid handles background noise. For this model, which Philips presents to us, we found only a few options for influencing comfort. Of course, noise suppression is integrated, which is meant to dampen tiring background sounds. In the HearLink 2030 ITC, we are not exactly spoiled, but we can live well with basic noise suppression. For windy situations outdoors, Philips has included wind noise reduction. This is quite useful and is simply part of a contemporary comfort feature.
Unfortunately, we did not find a burst noise filter that reacts to short, loud sounds. The microphones in the HearLink 2030 ITC can be directed forward in the direction of view. However, this is the only feature that slightly supports spatial hearing. The HearLink 2030 ITC doesn't have many adjustable equalizer bands, but the 12 should be sufficient for a good listening experience.
Interestingly, artificial intelligence also plays a role here in signal processing. The sound is therefore not only analyzed based on typical frequency patterns. Particularly intense, noisy situations are perceived as more realistic and pleasant.
The lack of impulse sound suppression is a significant drawback of these devices. Since the microphones are located quite exposed in the ear shell, any potential natural damping by the ear shell is eliminated. While it is possible to adjust for excessive amplification of strong, short sound events, this adjustment also affects overall listening.

Operation & connectivity
Most hearing aids automatically adapt to their surroundings. However, it is sometimes very practical to be able to make adjustments oneself. After all, the hearing aid does not know how you are feeling at the moment. We have looked at the control options that the HearLink 2030 ITC offers: For those who want to quickly and easily adjust the volume up or down, there is a button on the device. You can also select additional programs for special hearing situations through it. A remote control is available for the HearLink 2030 ITC. It is quite practical, fits in your pocket, and offers a volume control option as well as different hearing programs.
For some time now, there has been a trend to adjust hearing aids louder or quieter using voice commands. The idea is really good, but Philips is not there yet with this device. Don't be too concerned, this feature would be nice but is not essential. There is no control of the hearing aids with a simple fingertip in this Philips model, as specific sensors in the casing would have been required for that.
The best way to adjust the HearLink 2030 ITC is with the associated app. The first apps had just a single screen, but this one offers far more than just the usual volume control function. There are clearly points from us here. One of the best features of the hearing aid is the direct streaming function. This turns the hearing aid into a TrueWireless headphone, receiving calls and other sounds directly in the ear. The prerequisite is a compatible smartphone that includes 2.4 GHz technology. The biggest advantage is that you can hear calls not just in one ear but in both. Additionally, the sound can be tailored to personal needs.

Simplicity & security
User-friendliness is the next aspect we want to address. Here, it is about practicality in daily life and the question of how easy and safe it is to navigate life with the hearing aid. A situation recognition feature makes our lives easier when it comes to hearing. In the HearLink 2030 ITC, this is not quite as sophisticated. This means that the hearing aid can indeed distinguish between quieter and louder environments and adjust accordingly. However, the challenging moments, such as loud conversations in a strong background noise, are not compensated as well. Some people find it hard to adjust, but this hearing aid makes it easy for us to cope with the new volume. There is a familiarization manager that gradually leads us to the required target amplification. The duration can take a few weeks or even several months, and it can be individually set. The individual steps are so small that one does not even notice that there has been a volume increase.
HearLink 2030 ITC relies on battery power instead of rechargeable batteries. Advantage: Very long runtime with one battery. Unlike battery solutions, you rarely have to worry about the power supply. Disadvantage: Waste in the form of used batteries is generated. This hearing aid uses a size 312 hearing aid battery.
The HearLink 2030 is nearly dust and water-resistant and, with its IP 68 classification, is certainly well protected against external influences.

Extras
At the end of our test report, there is still a little space for the extra features: manufacturers often implement a tinnitus program in their hearing aids to alleviate the annoying ringing a bit. However, Philips has chosen not to include this in this model. That is unfortunate, as it would be a real added benefit for many people. We find the remote servicing feature exciting, which can be utilized. If one does not have the opportunity to visit the hearing care professional, they can instead contact them through the app, briefly describe their hearing problem, and then receive a data package with a new hearing aid configuration. If it sounds good, they can upload it to their hearing aids. A new trend in the hearing aid industry is integrated sensors that can track some personal health data, but the HearLink 2030 ITC does not offer this. We really liked the additional features offered by the HearLink 2030 ITC. Various assistants support your daily life beyond hearing and can be configured in the app. Such hearing aids are hard to part with. By the way, these lifestyle functions are often still being developed, so they may change with updates.
