Philips offers the HearLink 3010 MNR, a small, barely visible hearing aid worn behind the ear. It is a hearing aid from the budget segment and is suitable for mild to moderate hearing loss. By placing the speaker directly in the ear canal, it ensures that sound reaches the eardrum without loss.

Hearing comfort

What is most bothersome for hearing aid users: Exactly, background noises. That’s why we will first look at which comfort features the test device contains. With the HearLink 3010 MNR, we find only the absolute essentials regarding hearing comfort. A normal noise suppression is definitely present. It is supposed to dampen constant noises such as street noise or the sound of the air conditioning. In our test device from Philips, we have a rather simple form of noise suppression that should be sufficient for normal environments.

Sudden loud noises are likely cushioned, but we didn't really notice the effect. The HearLink 3010 MNR does have wind reduction, but it doesn’t really help outdoors. Let’s take a quick look at the equalizer: With 10 bands, it is not particularly flexible. With a few more channels, we surely could have achieved a nicer, more natural sound experience. But at least we can reasonably adjust the sound to our hearing perception. We have to forgo spatial hearing with the HearLink 3010 MNR, but at least the microphones can be switched to a focus mode.

An exciting topic in audiology is the use of artificial intelligence, but this feature is not yet applied in this Philips model.

Operation & connectivity

“Can I adjust something on my hearing aid myself?” “Is there maybe an app?” These and similar questions are becoming increasingly important when selecting a hearing aid, which is why let’s take a look at the operation and connectivity options. The simplest way to operate is always a button directly on the hearing aid. This one has it too. It can be programmed according to your wishes. Do you want a manual volume control? No problem, the button allows for step-by-step adjustment of the volume. Or do you need different special programs for your professional everyday life or your hobbies? These can also be activated via the button. Those who want to leave everything in automatic operation can simply ignore the button or even have it deactivated. If desired, there is a remote control for the hearing aid. This allows for effortless volume adjustments. The handling is not only child’s play, but no one will notice that you are currently adjusting your hearing aids.

We always appreciate it when a hearing aid surprises us with a great additional feature. For example, we would have liked to see voice control at this point. But that is not available in the HearLink 3010 MNR at present. In addition to buttons or remote controls, some hearing aids also have a tap control. This means you can just tap your ear briefly, and the device switches. However, we do not have this feature at Philips, as it would have required specific sensors.

As is common today, we also find a smartphone app for the HearLink 3010 MNR. This app includes solid basic functions and adds a few extra goodies on top. The HearLink 3010 comes with a 2.4 GHz antenna and allows us to enjoy binaural phone calls. This even gives us an advantage over normally hearing individuals. We find this great and are happy to award points.

Simplicity & security

Usability is the next aspect we want to address. This is about everyday practicality and the question of how easy and safe it is to navigate life with the hearing aid. The HearLink 3010 MNR can independently differentiate between quiet and loud environments, but there isn't much more to the program automation than that. One can hardly do without manual adjustment options here. A great feature of this hearing aid is the automatic acclimatization. Especially for those who have been hearing poorly for a long time and are wearing a hearing aid for the first time, this is an enormous relief. The volume doesn't have to be immediately cranked up to full; one can start at a lower level, and gradually, almost unnoticed, the amplification approaches the target.

Zinc-air batteries provide power to the HearLink 3010 MNR. Changing the batteries could become quite cumbersome for people with limited dexterity or vision. If you have concerns about this, it's better to look for a rechargeable model.

We had a care-free everyday experience in our test due to the IP-68 certification. This indicates that the hearing aid is particularly well protected against dust and water. We marched through the rain and then took out the hearing aids with wet hands - everything was no problem. However, the water resistance really only refers to fresh, natural water and not to soapy bathwater or saltwater.

Extras

Sometimes there are additional features in hearing aids that can be quite useful. Let's see how it is with this Philips device: First, we look for a special tinnitus program. Ear noises are a troublesome topic for many people. However, we found no option for tinnitus relief in the HearLink 3010 MNR.

Philips keeps up with the times and provides a forward-looking feature with the remote adjustment service. Working people with little time can contact their audiologist online and have their hearing aids reprogrammed. Hearing aid users who have a longer journey to the specialist store also benefit from this special service.

Tracking health data is a real added value in modern hearing aids. However, this Philips model lacks the sensors for this service. In conjunction with a smartphone, the HearLink 3010 MNR surprises us with a few nice lifestyle features. It is definitely worth getting thoroughly acquainted with the app and using the available assistance programs.

Conclusion: Philips HearLink 3010 MNR

This test device ranks in the lower positions in the overall results and lacks some features. We give it a rating of 3.79. For less demanding listeners, this is acceptable, but for a very active lifestyle, we recommend a hearing aid with more extensive comfort features.
