In the jungle of hearing aid variants, we want to give you a bit of orientation and present you with another test report. Today we are focusing on a Phonak model, specifically the Virto Paradise 70 10 NW O. The amplification performance is sufficient for nearly every hearing need, and just by virtue of its precise placement directly in the ear canal, it has quite a reasonable sound. The Virto Paradise 70 10 NW O is a small mini hearing aid at a rather premium price. It is worn in the ear.
Hearing comfort
In the first chapter, we assess the quality of noise management. We call it hearing comfort, as these features determine how pleasant the hearing aid wearer finds the sound of their hearing aids. However, noises can be of various natures and require quite different tools for suppression. With the Virto Paradise 70 10 NW O, the manufacturer provides the customer with comprehensive noise management. First, we look at noise suppression, which is designed to tame everyday sounds like the hum of ventilation or refrigerator noise. In this Phonak model, background noise can be adjusted in multiple levels, allowing the user to decide how much attenuation is truly comfortable.
We are pleased to find a good and efficient impulse noise suppression here. It is definitely useful in everyday life, as it noticeably dampens slamming doors, clattering dishes, or similarly jarring sounds. This device features very good wind management, making outdoor activities enjoyable. A brilliant listening experience is also based on the number of frequency bands. The more bands there are, the narrower the individual frequency channels, allowing the hearing aid to be tailored to individual preferences. Here we have 20 bands readily available. This not only allows for a great sound impression, but also enables the speech and noise suppression to work very effectively. In spatial hearing, the Virto Paradise 70 10 NW O showcases its full strength: Due to the deep placement just before the eardrum, sound capture occurs similarly to an ear without a hearing aid. The outer ear naturally directs the sound into the ear canal, and the existing head shadow effects are utilized further. Such excellent 3D hearing could probably not be artificially created.
Phonak is not yet utilizing artificial intelligence in this version.

Operation & connectivity
The majority of functions are activated automatically by this Phonak model. However, it can be very useful to have the ability to expand the functionality a bit. In our testing, we discovered what options we have here. First, we found a button directly on the hearing aid. This is very sensible, as it is the easiest and quickest way to make adjustments. The volume can be adjusted through it, and different hearing programs can also be activated. If you prefer not to make adjustments directly on the ear, you can of course deactivate the button. A discreet way to change the hearing aid is with the remote control. It fits in any pocket. If the person you’re talking to speaks too softly again, just one or two clicks are enough to adjust the volume. Additional hearing programs for listening to music or driving can also be activated using the remote control.
Some hearing aids can already be controlled by voice, but this one from Phonak unfortunately cannot yet. This would be practical if your fingers are not as agile, or if you simply like smart gadgets. Besides buttons or remote controls, some hearing aids also have a tap control feature. This means you can just tap your ear briefly, and then the device switches. However, we don’t have that here with Phonak, as it would have required specific sensors.
Quickly turning up the volume via the app - that is unfortunately not available with the Virto Paradise 70 10 NW O. There is no app available for this. However, this is irrelevant if you are not a smartphone user anyway. A connection to other audio sources is not provided here. That’s too bad, as a wireless streaming function would have offered real added value.

Simplicity & security
Another point on our checklist is handling. Does everything work simply and reliably? What does the hearing aid offer to ensure safe application in everyday life? The Virto Paradise 70 10 NW O automatically accesses the most important hearing settings, making daily use easier. However, those who frequently experience changing acoustic environments should have the manual additional programs configured. We give a big plus point for the automatic acclimatization assistant. It gradually raises the starting volume in very small steps until my hearing target is reached. This greatly facilitates the adjustment to the new sound.
The Virto Paradise 70 10 NW O gets its energy from small disposable batteries that need to be changed every few days. While this is not rocket science, it should be considered, especially in cases of motor difficulties. A rechargeable battery would make handling much easier.
The Virto Paradise 70 is nearly dustproof and waterproof, and with its IP 68 classification, it is certainly well protected against external influences.

Extras
Everyone appreciates a few extra features, so let's see if we can find some here: Phonak has integrated a sound generator that plays soothing sounds for those suffering from tinnitus. This can distract from the tinnitus and provide a bit more relaxation.
What about remote maintenance? Such online services save a trip to the specialist store because you can directly contact an acoustic professional via the app. Unfortunately, we couldn't find anything like this for the Virto Paradise 70 10 NW O. It's a pity, as it would have been a great additional tool.
Tracking health data is a real added value in modern hearing aids. However, this Phonak model lacks the sensors for this service. It would have been nice to have a few lifestyle features, but they are not available in the Virto Paradise 70 10 NW O. Other hearing aids can score with speech translators or fall alarms, but here it remains with the usual range of functions.
