What is most annoying for hearing aid users? Exactly, background noise. That's why we first look at the comfort features that the test device includes. With the Virto Paradise 90 10 NW O, the manufacturer provides customers with a comprehensive noise management system. Normal noise cancellation is definitely present. It is designed to dampen constant noises like traffic noise or the hum of an air conditioning unit. In our test device from Phonak, the manufacturer has equipped it with its most powerful algorithm. The noise reduction can be configured in several stages and provides a noticeably significant reduction at maximum level.
Quickly occurring, rattling sounds are noticeably and sufficiently dampened, which we find pleasant. A multi-stage wind noise management system is also included. This ensures that listening outdoors is enjoyable and free from disturbances. A brilliant listening experience is also based, among other things, on the number of frequency bands. The more bands there are, and the narrower the individual frequency channels are, the better the hearing aid can be adjusted to individual preferences. Here we have a total of 20 bands. Not only can this create a great sound impression, but speech and background noise cancellation can also work very carefully. While tools for spatial hearing are missing here, we still give full marks. This is because spatial hearing is preserved since the hearing aid sits directly in the ear canal, and it is in that location where the sound reaches even non-hearing aid users. This is a real advantage of this special, small design.

For those who want to quickly and easily adjust the volume up or down, there is a button on the device. Additional programs for special hearing situations can also be selected through this. A discreet way to change the hearing aid is through a remote control. It fits in any pocket. If the person you’re talking to speaks too quietly again, just one or two clicks are enough to adjust the volume. Additional hearing programs for listening to music or driving can also be activated with the remote control.
Voice commands are a relatively new way to operate hearing aids. However, this model does not yet have that capability. That's not a big deal - the main thing is that you can hear well. Some hearing aids can also be controlled with a quick tap of the finger, without having to press a button. However, this feature has not been implemented here yet.
An additional app for individual operation would be nice, but it is currently not offered for this hearing aid. The smartphone cannot be connected to the hearing aid, as it unfortunately lacks the necessary equipment with a radio antenna.

It has a wide range of typical hearing situations stored, which the device recognizes independently and always generates the appropriate setting. Some people struggle with getting used to it, but this hearing aid makes it easy for us to adapt to the new volume. There is an acclimatization manager that gradually introduces us to the required target amplification. The duration can range from a few weeks to several months; this is individually adjustable. The individual steps are so small that you hardly notice that there has been a volume increase.
The Virto Paradise 90 10 NW O is not rechargeable. It operates on size 10 hearing aid batteries. Disadvantage: The batteries are disposed of after use. Advantage: Daily charging of batteries is not necessary; the hearing aid runs continuously for several days on a single battery.
The data sheet certifies the Phonak device with an IP protection class rating of 68. This makes it one of the most resilient hearing aids on the market. Dust has no chance, and water does not penetrate the casing unless it submerges deeper than 1.5 meters. Nevertheless, be careful. Shampoo, for example, changes the surface tension of water. You should also avoid saltwater. However, in everyday life, you can behave quite carefree.

An online contact with the audiologist via the app would be very useful. This is quite common today and helps with minor adjustment issues. Unfortunately, Phonak does not offer this and does not earn any extra points for it.
Some hearing aids can track certain health data. However, this requires specific sensors in the hearing aid, which we unfortunately do not have with the Virto Paradise 90 10 NW O. Other hearing aids already have a few enhanced options like a fall alert or reminder functions. We do not find this here, and that is not so dramatic, as the normal hearing functions are still the most important.
