The ReSound Key 3 CIC in review

Could this hearing aid from the ReSound program be the right one for you? In our review of the Key 3 CIC, we highlighted the main aspects. Here we have a very small hearing aid for a tight budget that is worn in the ear. The precise position directly in the ear canal lays the foundation for good hearing success, as the sound has a very short distance to travel to the eardrum. This ensures that all sounds arrive exactly where we want them.
The Key 3 CIC provides sufficient amplification for mild, moderate, and even strong hearing needs.
Hearing comfort
In the hearing comfort section, we look at how a hearing aid deals with all the background noise. Comfortable noise management significantly contributes to a user liking and regularly wearing their hearing aids. In this ReSound device, we find only the absolute essentials regarding hearing comfort. The regular noise suppression aims to attenuate uniform, rumbling background noises. The Key 3 CIC has only a minimal basic reduction. A certain tolerance for noise should be expected from the hearing aid user.
Points are deducted for the lack of impulse sound suppression. Normally, this suppresses short, clattering noises. But those who choose this hearing aid should not be disturbed by that. The device from ReSound can also detect wind noise, but only a very slight noise reduction follows. This is sufficient for normal everyday situations, but true outdoor enthusiasts will not be satisfied with it. We have to forgo spatial hearing with the Key 3 CIC, but at least the microphones can be switched to a focus mode. The number of equalizer bands is very important for adaptation to hearing needs. The CIC only provides 8 and does not allow for many fine-tuning options in the long run.
Signal processing is based, among other things, on typical frequency patterns of speech and noise, but artificial intelligence has not yet come into play here.

Operation & connectivity
Digital hearing aids have long evolved beyond their basic amplification function. Apps and other control options significantly expand their functionality, which is why we are also looking at this important topic with the Key 3 CIC from ReSound. We searched in vain for a button for quick access options. It has probably fallen victim to the small form factor. This is manageable because the hearing aid automatically makes most adjustments anyway. Unfortunately, this hearing aid cannot be adjusted via a remote control – a few points are lost there. Voice commands are a fairly new way of operating hearing aids. However, we do not have this option in this model. This is not a big deal – as long as one can hear well. In addition to buttons or remote controls, some hearing aids also feature a tap control. This means you can simply tap your ear briefly, and the device will switch. However, we do not have this option at ReSound, as it would have required specific sensors. If you are looking for an app, unfortunately, you will not find it here. The Key 3 CIC has to do without smart control functions. This point is lost. The smartphone cannot be connected to the hearing aid, as it unfortunately lacks the necessary equipment with a wireless antenna.

Simplicity & security
An important factor for the acceptance of a hearing aid is its practicality in everyday life. This includes, for example, automated functions as well as robustness and user-friendliness. We do not necessarily experience simple, comfortable listening with the Key 3 CIC. In a quieter daily life, one can manage quite well, but as soon as one has a varied listening experience, manual adjustments cannot be avoided. We are very pleased with the integrated acclimatization manager. It gradually increases the volume of the hearing aid in tiny steps until our target amplification is eventually reached. We can relax and gradually get used to the new auditory impressions.
Unfortunately, the Key 3 CIC is not equipped with a rechargeable battery, so regular size 10 batteries are needed for operation.
We had an carefree everyday experience in our test due to the IP-68 certification. This indicates that the hearing aid is particularly well protected against dust and water. We marched through the rain and then removed the hearing aids with wet hands - no problem at all. However, the water resistance really only applies to fresh, natural water and not to foamy bath water or saltwater.

ReSound Key 3 CIC:
Extras
We have covered the main factors in our test report. Before we conclude, we are looking for a few extras: We particularly liked the optional tinnitus program. There are quite a few people who are occasionally or frequently plagued by a ringing or buzzing in their ears. The tinnitus program in the Key 3 CIC is essentially just a sound generator. It aims to produce broad-spectrum noises or sounds that gently and pleasantly stimulate all hearing frequencies. The tinnitus fades into the background and is no longer perceived as disturbing.
An online contact with the audiologist through the app would be very useful. This is already quite common today and provides assistance with minor adjustment issues. Unfortunately, ReSound has opted out of this and therefore does not earn any extra points.
Tracking health data is a real added value in modern hearing aids. However, this ReSound model lacks the sensors for that service. It would have been nice to have a few lifestyle features, but there are none in the Key 3 CIC. Other hearing aids can impress with features like language translation or fall alerts, but here it remains within the usual range of functions.

Conclusion: ReSound Key 3 CIC
In summary, this device ranks in the lower positions and provides us with little more than a solid basic configuration. Of course, one can understand speech with the device, as with all hearing aids, but not much is done to alleviate listening effort. Our overall rating: 4.83. Please always consider this rating in relation to the price range of this hearing aid.
