Here we take a look at a hearing aid from the upper mid-range that is worn in the ear. It is called Key 4 ITE-DW and comes from the manufacturer ReSound. It can be used by all people who have both mild and more severe hearing needs and desire a traditionally sized hearing aid. Due to its acoustically optimal fit in the ear, it has very good sound characteristics.

Hearing comfort

First, we assess the hearing comfort features. What types of sounds does the hearing aid recognize? How does it handle them? Is the hearing aid suitable for a varied everyday life? Here with this test device, we find only the absolutely necessary features regarding hearing comfort. As with all hearing aids, it also features typical noise reduction. It should reduce monotonous, noisy background sounds to such an extent that they no longer dominate. The Key 4 ITE-DW has only minimal basic attenuation. Users should have a certain tolerance for noise in this case.

The device from ReSound can also detect wind noise, but the noise attenuation that follows is very minimal. For normal everyday situations, this is sufficient, but true outdoor enthusiasts will not be satisfied with this. Brief, loud sounds can also be detected by this device, but the dampening is very low. Those who often have such impulsive noises in their environment should choose a different model. While the Key 4 ITE-DW does not have many adjustable equalizer bands, the 12 should be sufficient for a good listening experience. In our tests, we also examine spatial hearing. Although adaptive microphones are integrated here, the wireless networking between both ears is missing, making it impossible to reconstruct true 3D hearing. Nevertheless, one can manage well. With a little practice, directional hearing can be retrained.

The signal processing is based, among other things, on typical frequency patterns of speech and noise, but artificial intelligence has not yet been implemented here.

Operation & connectivity

The majority of functions are activated automatically by this ReSound model. However, it is sometimes very useful to have the option to expand the range of functions. In our testing, we discovered what options we have here. First, we found a button directly on the hearing aid. This is very practical as it is the simplest and quickest way to make adjustments. The volume can be adjusted through it, and different hearing programs can also be activated. If one prefers not to adjust anything directly at the ear, the button can of course be deactivated. The small remote control, which is optionally available, is also very handy. For us, it is one of the most convenient ways to increase or decrease the volume or switch to another hearing program. No one notices anything; there is no need to touch the ear.

Some hearing aids can already be controlled by voice, but this one from ReSound unfortunately cannot yet. It would be useful when fingers are not as nimble anymore or when someone simply likes smart gadgets. There is no control of the hearing aids with a simple tap in this ReSound model, as it would have required certain sensors in the housing.

Our favorite tool for hearing aids is the app, and we really like this one. In addition to the obligatory volume controls, there are also options for sound adjustment. This significantly expands the potential of the Key 4 ITE-DW and provides relief when listening becomes strenuous again. You don't need headphones here anymore, as it has a wireless option and can transmit sounds directly from the smartphone to the ears - if the smartphone is equipped with 2.4 GHz LE technology.

Simplicity & security

How does one cope with the hearing aid in everyday life? This is the next aspect we will evaluate. Because only if such a device works simply and easily can one become accustomed to it. Unfortunately, the simple hearing with the Key 4 ITE-DW does not look very good. The situation automation is quite limited, and we receive little support when it gets loud around us. This can be compensated by using the manual adjustment options. However, this hardly scores points in terms of simplicity. We are very pleased with the integrated acclimatization manager. It gradually increases the volume of the hearing aid in tiny steps until our target amplification is eventually reached. We can relax and gradually get used to the new auditory impressions.

The Key 4 ITE-DW relies on battery power instead of rechargeable batteries. Advantage: Very long runtime with one battery. Unlike rechargeable solutions, you rarely have to worry about the power supply. Disadvantage: Waste is generated in the form of used batteries. This hearing aid uses a hearing aid battery size 13.

The Key 4 is nearly dust and water-resistant and is certainly well protected against external influences with its IP 68 classification.

In conclusion, we want to know if the hearing aid perhaps offers any specials: A special tinnitus program can be programmed on request in the Key 4 ITE-DW. This allows stimulating, pleasant sounds to be generated that distract from the tinnitus when it is particularly strong. We find this very useful and gladly award extra points.

A clever tool is the integrated remote service. Almost everyone has a smartphone, and time is a precious commodity. Therefore, such a remote service is absolutely appropriate. Anyone who needs a new programming for their hearing aids can easily contact the audiologist via the app and describe their hearing wishes. Through a cloud service, the professional can then send an individual setting as a data package to the app. From there, it is uploaded to the hearing aid and can be tested immediately. This definitely deserves extra points in our test.

If ReSound had integrated motion sensors into this hearing aid, individual health tracking could even be performed. However, that is not the case here. These points are lost for the Key 4 ITE-DW in the rating. Other hearing aids already offer some extended options, such as a fall alarm or reminder functions. We do not find that here, and it's not too dramatic, as the normal hearing functions are still the most important.

Im Gesamtergebnis landet dieses Testgerät auf den hinteren Plätzen und lässt einige Ausstattungsmerkmale vermissen. Wir vergeben die Note 3,79. Für anspruchsarme Hörer ist das in Ordnung, für einen sehr aktiven Lebensstil empfehlen wir allerdings ein Hörgerät mit umfangreicheren Komfortmerkmalen.
