The Oticon Geno 2 ITE in review

The Geno 2 ITE from Oticon is a traditionally sized hearing aid worn in the ear. Due to its placement directly inside the ear, very good sound transmission is possible. The Geno 2 ITE is a budget-friendly hearing aid suitable for mild, moderate, and severe hearing needs.

Hearing comfort

What bothers most hearing aid users? Exactly, background noise. That's why we first take a look at the comfort features of the test device. The Geno 2 ITE offers only the absolute essentials when it comes to hearing comfort. There is definitely a standard noise suppression feature. It is supposed to dampen consistent noises like road noise or the sound of the air conditioning. In our test device from Oticon, this only works to a limited extent. There is no more than a very basic noise suppression available.

A so-called impulse noise filter would have been nice; it would have made the clattering when emptying the dishwasher a bit more bearable. However, we have to forgo that with the Geno 2 ITE. There is a basic wind noise reduction feature. It is quite useful outdoors, but it is not sufficient for a stronger autumn wind. We also find the low number of frequency channels to be suboptimal. The device only has 6 of them, which leaves little room for adjustment during initial programming as well as long-term tuning, and sound quality sacrifices must probably be accepted. Unfortunately, spatial hearing is not well developed. The hearing aids can focus forward; however, this doesn't help when trying to determine from which direction a car is approaching or where someone is calling from.

Other hearing aids are already using artificial intelligence in their signal processing, but this strategy is not yet included in the Geno 2 ITE.

Operation & connectivity

The majority of the features of this Oticon model are activated automatically. However, it can be very useful to expand the functionality a bit more. In the test, we found out what options we have here. A very quick way to adjust the volume is the small button on the device. It's easy to feel, and you can adjust the volume in several steps, either louder or quieter. Additional programs for special listening situations can also be activated with it. If you want to do without the button, you can simply have it disabled. The small remote control, which is available as an option, is very practical. For us, it's one of the most convenient ways to increase or decrease the volume or switch to another hearing program. No one notices anything; reaching for the ear is unnecessary.

There has been a trend for some time now to adjust hearing aids using voice commands. The idea is really good, but Oticon has not yet reached that stage with this device. Don’t worry, this feature would be nice but is not essential. Tap Control would also have been an interesting function. With it, you can change the settings with a quick tap on the ear. But this is not available in the Geno 2 ITE yet.

A very typical way to operate devices nowadays is via smartphone apps. The Geno 2 ITE also has an app. With it, you can intuitively adjust the volume or change the program. You can't really go wrong with it, as there's not much more to it than that. A particularly comfortable feature is the wireless connection in the hearing aid. You need nothing more than a small additional device, and you can stream sounds from your smartphone, tablet, or laptop into the hearing aids. Since mobile devices often only have mediocre speaker quality, this streaming function is a real advantage. The additional device is called a streamer. It is a small, slim gadget that you either wear around your neck or clip to your collar. It contains a powerful battery and a Bluetooth interface.

Simplicity & security

Another point in our checklist is handling. Is everything easy and reliable? What does the hearing aid offer to ensure safe use in everyday life? Unfortunately, the ease of hearing with the Geno 2 ITE is not very good. The situational automatic feature is quite limited, giving us little support when it gets loud around us. This can be compensated by using the manual adjustment options. However, this hardly scores points in terms of simplicity. A crucial aspect of simplicity for us is the support during acclimatization. Especially after years of poor hearing, it can sometimes be difficult to perceive everything at a natural volume. Our test device has an acclimatization manager that helps us with very small volume adjustments throughout the acclimatization phase. After a few weeks or months, we then reach the calculated amplification level.

Zinc-air batteries power the Geno 2 ITE. Changing the batteries could become quite troublesome for people with limited dexterity or vision. If you have concerns about that, it's better to look for a rechargeable model.

The hearing aid has been classified in protection class IP68. This guarantees comprehensive protection against dust ingress. Water also cannot easily harm the hearing aid. Thus, it is well-prepared for outdoor activities where it may get wet and dirty. However, do not necessarily go swimming or bathing with the hearing aids. Bath additives or the salt content in seawater can change the composition and may ultimately cause damage.

Extras

Finally, we want to know if the hearing aid perhaps offers any specials: We would have liked to find a tinnitus program at this point, but unfortunately, there isn't one.

Online services are becoming increasingly common. There is often a remote maintenance service available for hearing aids as well. However, Oticon has not provided this for its Geno 2 ITE model yet. Therefore, one has to go to the specialized store every time they want to reprogram their hearing aid. No extra point for that.

Tracking health data is a real added value in modern hearing aids. However, this Oticon model lacks the necessary sensors for this service. The hearing aid does not include additional features such as special assistance systems, a fall alert, or language translators. This is not a major issue, as it does not affect the important hearing functions.

Conclusion: Oticon Geno 2 ITE

This test device ranks in the lower positions overall and lacks some features. We give it a score of 3.82. For less demanding listeners, this is acceptable, but for a very active lifestyle, we recommend a hearing aid with more comprehensive comfort features.
