Here we take a look at a hearing aid from an affordable price segment that is worn in the ear. It is called Quattro NEO 5 ITC-DW and comes from the manufacturer ReSound. It can be used by anyone with mild, moderate, or more severe hearing needs who desires a small hearing aid. Due to its direct location in the ear canal, it has very good sound properties.
Hearing comfort
What is most bothersome to hearing aid users: Exactly, the background noise. Therefore, we first look at what comfort features the test device contains. With the Quattro NEO 5 ITC-DW, we found only a few options for comfort adjustment. Normal noise suppression is definitely present. It is supposed to dampen constant noises like street noise or the humming of the air conditioning. In our test device from ReSound, we are not exactly spoiled, but we can manage well with basic noise suppression.
An impulse sound suppressor is unfortunately not included in the Quattro NEO 5 ITC-DW. There is a basic wind noise reduction feature. It is quite useful outdoors, but it is generally insufficient for a stronger autumn wind. The Quattro NEO 5 ITC-DW does not have many adjustable equalizer bands, but the 12 should be sufficient for a good listening experience. The adjustable microphones help to detect specific directions and can also assist with noise cancellation, but the spatial sound was not very natural.
Sometimes we encounter hearing aids that successfully process data with the help of artificial intelligence, but this device has not yet reached that level.

Operation & connectivity
The most functions of this ReSound model are activated automatically. However, it can be very useful to have the option to expand the functionality a bit. In our testing, we found out what options we have here. There is a button directly on the hearing aid. This allows you to adjust the volume or activate additional hearing programs. It can be programmed according to customer preferences. Of course, using it is optional. We do like the small remote controls, and we have found one for this model. This allows for discreet adjustments to the volume or sound.
Some hearing aids can already be controlled by voice, but unfortunately, this one from ReSound cannot yet. It would be practical if finger dexterity is limited or if you simply like smart gadgets. If there are sensors in the hearing aid, a tap control could be conceivable, which would trigger a specific function by tapping your fingers on your ear. However, this option is not available in the Quattro NEO 5 ITC-DW.
Smartphone apps are now frequently offered for better control of hearing aids. In our opinion, the ReSound app is one of the better ones because it offers a good set of adjustment options. Headphones are no longer needed here, as it has a wireless option and can transmit sounds directly from the smartphone to the ears—provided the smartphone is equipped with 2.4 GHz LE technology.

How does one cope with the hearing aid in everyday life? This is the next aspect we will evaluate. Because only if such a device works simply and without complications can one become accustomed to it. The Quattro NEO 5 ITC-DW can independently differentiate between quiet and loud environments, but there isn’t much more to the program automation. Manual adjustment options are hard to do without here. This device supports the adjustment to the new hearing experience with a fully automatic acclimatization manager. It adjusts the amplification in barely noticeable steps until my hearing loss is completely compensated for. I have to do nothing more than wear my hearing aids regularly.
The Quattro NEO 5 ITC-DW is not equipped with a battery, so it is not rechargeable. It uses a hearing aid battery size 312 as its power source. This needs to be replaced every few days.
We had a carefree everyday experience during our testing due to the IP-68 certification. This indicates that the hearing aid is particularly well protected against dust and water. We walked through the rain and then took out the hearing aids with wet hands - no problem at all. However, the water resistance really only refers to fresh, natural water and not to foamy bathwater or saltwater.

Finally, let's take a quick look at whether there are any extras available: We noticed the tinnitus option. If desired, one can set up a special tinnitus program. This gently plays soothing sounds to distract from the annoying tinnitus. The sounds can be tailored to personal hearing preferences.
A clever tool is the integrated remote maintenance service. Almost everyone has a smartphone, and time is a precious resource. Therefore, such a remote maintenance service is absolutely appropriate. Those needing a new programming for their hearing aids can easily contact the audiologist through the app and describe their hearing preferences. Through a cloud service, the professional can then send a customized setting as a data package to the app. From there, it is uploaded to the hearing aid and can be tested immediately. This definitely earns extra points in our test.
Some hearing aids can track certain health data. However, this requires special sensors in the hearing aid, which we unfortunately do not have in the Quattro NEO 5 ITC-DW. The functionality of the Quattro NEO 5 ITC-DW is limited to normal hearing, which is perfectly fine. Additional functions like fall alerts or Siri connections provide a significant added value but are not relevant for a good hearing balance.
