The ReSound Savi 3 61-DRW in review
We are once again in the test lab, and this time we had a product from ReSound in our hands or rather on our ear. The full product name is Savi 3 61-DRW, and it is classified among the devices at a lower price level. Due to the receiver (= speaker) that is placed directly in the ear canal, it has good acoustic properties. The Savi 3 61-DRW is worn behind the ear, and it is a small, hardly noticeable hearing aid for mild to profound hearing losses.
Savi supplements the ReSound range with a solid entry-level model – clear in sound, easy to handle.
Hearing comfort
In our test, we usually start with the analysis of comfort features. A comfortable sound is characterized by a mix of speech and ambient noise that is realistic and as pleasant as possible. Various electronic tools take care of all the noises. In the Savi 3 61-DRW, we find only the absolute essentials regarding hearing comfort. One of the noise tools is noise suppression, which is supposed to dampen sounds like traffic noise, refrigerator hum, or PC fan noise. Here, it works only to a limited extent. There is nothing more than very basic noise suppression in this device.
Short, loud sounds can also be recognized by this device. However, the attenuation is very low. Those who often have such impulsive noises in their surroundings should choose a different model. This hearing aid can detect wind noise, but the reduction is barely noticeable. The microphones in the Savi 3 61-DRW can be switched to face forward in the direction of view. However, that is the only feature that slightly supports spatial hearing. A proper foundation for programming the Savi 3 61-DRW is provided by the 12 equalizer bands. As sound junkies, we wish for a few more, but for the typical situations we encounter in our daily lives, one can create quite a decent sound profile from them.
Other hearing aids are already using artificial intelligence in their signal processing, but this strategy is not yet implemented in the Savi 3 61-DRW.
The Autoscope Adaptive Directionality from ReSound automatically adjusts the opening angle of the directional microphones to the ambient noise – for targeted hearing with reduced background noise. This way, you can enjoy clear speech understanding, even in changing listening situations.

Operation & connectivity
Most hearing aids automatically adjust to their environment. However, it is sometimes very practical to be able to make adjustments yourself. After all, the hearing aid does not know how you are feeling at the moment. We have looked at what control options the Savi 3 61-DRW offers: There is a button directly on the hearing aid. With it, you can change the volume or activate additional hearing programs. It can be programmed completely according to the customer’s wishes. The use is, of course, optional. A remote control is available for the Savi 3 61-DRW. It is quite handy, fits in your pocket, and offers a volume up and down option as well as various hearing programs.
In our test, we did not find any voice control options. This feature is not necessarily required, but it would have been nice. In addition to buttons or remote controls, some hearing aids also have a tap control. This means that you can simply tap your ear briefly, and the device switches. However, we do not have this feature at ReSound; it would have required specific sensors.
We always have our smartphone with us, and with the Savi 3 61-DRW, it is worth it because it can be customized via an app. The app is also really fun and has a range of features that you wouldn't expect in a hearing aid app. If you enjoy playing, this is the perfect fit. Problems with making phone calls using the smartphone are a thing of the past with this device. Phone calls, music, and other sounds are transmitted completely wirelessly to the hearing aids. Headphones are therefore unnecessary. We tested the wireless transmission during longer phone calls as well as listening to music while exercising. Everything worked easily and smoothly. Only a compatible smartphone with 2.4 GHz wireless technology is required.
ReSound makes no distinctions in connectivity – all models offer LE Audio with Auracast as well as direct audio streaming to guarantee you the best possible hearing comfort.

Simplicity & security
How does one manage with a hearing aid in everyday life? This is the next aspect we will evaluate. Because only if such a device functions simply and easily can one become accustomed to it. We would have liked to see an automatic program in the Savi 3 61-DRW that adjusts itself to the environment. However, this is not available, so unfortunately, points are deducted here. Some people find it difficult to get used to it, but this hearing aid makes it easy for us to adjust to the new volume. There is a familiarization manager that gradually leads us to the required target amplification. The duration can last from a few weeks to several months, and this is individually adjustable. The individual steps are so small that you hardly notice that there has just been an increase in volume.
The Savi 3 61-DRW operates with 312 disposable batteries; it is not rechargeable. This has its pros and cons. For the decision between "battery or rechargeable," we have provided assistance here: Rechargeable hearing aids or batteries: 6 criteria for your decision.
The hearing aid has been classified into IP protection class 68. This guarantees comprehensive protection against dust ingress. Water also cannot easily harm the hearing aid. Thus, it is well-equipped for outdoor activities, where it can get wet and dirty. However, do not necessarily go swimming or bathing with the hearing aids. Bath additives or the salt content in seawater can alter the composition and ultimately cause damage.

Extras
Everyone appreciates a few extra features, so let's see if we can find some here: We noticed the tinnitus option. Those who wish can have a special tinnitus program set up. This applies a gentle noise to the ears if needed, to distract a bit from the annoying tinnitus. The sounds can be tailored to personal hearing preferences.
A clever tool is the integrated remote maintenance service. Almost everyone has a smartphone, and time is a scarce resource. Therefore, such a remote maintenance service is absolutely appropriate. If someone needs to reprogram their hearing aids, they can easily contact the audiologist via the app and describe their hearing wishes. Through a cloud service, the professional can then send a personalized setting as a data package to the app. From there, it gets loaded onto the hearing aid and can be tried out immediately. This definitely deserves extra points in our test.
If ReSound had integrated motion sensors into this hearing aid, it could even allow for individual health tracking. However, this is not the case here. These points are lost for the Savi 3 61-DRW in the rating. Other hearing aids already have a few expanded options like a fall alarm or reminder functions. We don't find that here, and that's not so dramatic because the normal hearing functions are still the most important.
Replaceable microphone filters ensure consistently clear sound with the ReSound model. The change is simple and convenient to do on your own.
